Use Bing AI Mode as a research conversation, not as a final authority. Start with a focused question, open the AI Mode tab, ask follow-up questions, inspect the references with Show all, and read the original pages behind important claims. Compare those pages for authority, date, direct evidence, and independent agreement before relying on the result.
What Bing AI Mode does
Bing offers two different AI-assisted search experiences. An AI Overview is intended to give a quick orientation on a results page. AI Mode is designed for a longer, conversational exploration: you can read a fuller response, ask follow-up questions, and inspect the references used to construct the answer.

That distinction determines which tool to use. If you only need a definition or a fast list of starting points, an overview may be enough. If the topic has competing explanations, a time-sensitive answer, technical details, or consequences for a real decision, move into AI Mode and verify the underlying pages yourself.

Microsoft says AI Mode answers are grounded in web information and provide links for review. That is useful for discovery, but a link is not proof that every sentence in the answer is correct. The answer may combine several pages, simplify a qualification, or apply information to a situation the source did not address.

Prepare a question that can be checked
The quality of source checking starts before you open AI Mode. A broad prompt produces a broad answer, which makes it difficult to tell whether each reference actually supports the point you care about.
State the subject and the decision
Include the object of the question and what you need to learn. “Explain electric-vehicle battery warranties” is a useful orientation prompt. “For a used electric car bought in the United Kingdom in 2026, what warranty terms should I verify, and which claims require the manufacturer’s documentation?” gives the conversation a scope and a verification target.
Add boundaries that matter
Specify the country or market, date range, edition, audience, or technical version when those details could change the answer. Ask for a distinction between established facts and interpretation. If you need primary evidence, say so explicitly: “Prioritize government publications, standards bodies, or the manufacturer’s technical documentation.”

Use one prompt to establish vocabulary and major subtopics. Then ask separate follow-ups for dates, exceptions, costs, safety implications, or competing views. This creates a trail you can audit instead of one oversized response whose claims are difficult to separate.
Step-by-step: research with Bing AI Mode
- Open Bing and enter a focused question. Begin with the subject, scope, and the outcome you need. Bing may show an AI Overview as a quick starting point. Treat it as orientation rather than your completed investigation.
- Open the AI Mode tab. Microsoft describes the AI Mode tab as the route for deeper exploration from a Bing results page. The exact placement or availability can differ by device, market, and browser version.
- Read the complete response before judging it. Look for the answer’s definitions, dates, conditions, and conclusions. Separate individual claims mentally or in notes. A paragraph can contain several claims that are supported by different references, or by none of the references as directly as the wording suggests.
- Ask a narrowing follow-up. Continue in the same conversation rather than restarting. Useful follow-ups ask for a particular jurisdiction, a newer date, a comparison of two methods, the strongest evidence for a claim, or the limitations of the answer. For example:
Which statements depend on data after January 2025?orShow the evidence for the safety claim and distinguish a measured result from an expert recommendation. - Request the angle the first answer missed. Ask about exceptions, opposing evidence, definitions, implementation details, or what would change the conclusion. This is especially important when the first response sounds definitive on a subject with legitimate disagreement.
- Open the references attached to the response. Microsoft’s product guidance describes viewing references and selecting Show all to see the full list. Open the pages themselves; do not stop at the title, snippet, or domain name.
- Match each important claim to a page. Identify which reference supports the exact sentence, number, date, or recommendation. If you cannot find the claim on the page, mark it as unverified rather than assuming that another part of the page proves it.
- Compare independent credible sources. For claims that affect money, health, safety, law, security, or a major technical choice, look for agreement or meaningful disagreement among authoritative sources. Use additional Bing searches when the references are incomplete.
- Record the conclusion with its conditions. Note the source publisher, publication or update date, relevant passage, jurisdiction, and any limitation. Preserve the difference between “the source says” and “the source proves.”
How to check Bing AI sources
Source checking is not a popularity contest between domains. Evaluate whether a particular page is competent to answer the question and whether its evidence supports the precise claim.

Microsoft says it aims to provide authoritative results and show the name or website of third-party sources. That is a description of the search system’s goal, not a guarantee about every result. You still need to judge the page and the evidence.
Read past the headline
Open the relevant section, definition, table, methodology, or primary document. A headline may omit a date range or limitation that changes the meaning. Check whether the page is reporting an original finding or summarizing another publisher. When the answer contains a number, locate the number in the source and confirm its unit, population, time period, and conditions.

Distinguish primary and secondary material
A regulator, standards organization, court, manufacturer, university research group, or original dataset may be the primary source for a specific claim. A reputable secondary explainer can be useful for context, but it should not replace the primary document when the decision depends on exact wording or technical conditions.
Check that the citation fits the sentence
One reference can be relevant to a topic without supporting every sentence next to it. Test the connection directly: identify the proposition, find the passage, and ask whether the passage establishes it or merely mentions it. If the support is indirect, describe it as context rather than proof.
Follow-up prompts that improve an investigation
Follow-ups work best when they ask for a specific research operation. Put the variable you care about in the prompt instead of asking the system to “be more accurate.”

Define each technical term before comparing the options. - Evidence:
For each major claim, identify the reference that supports it and quote the relevant passage briefly. - Counterevidence:
What credible sources disagree, and is the disagreement about data, definitions, or interpretation? - Uncertainty:
Which parts are established, which are estimates, and which depend on assumptions? - Freshness:
Which references are older than [date], and could a newer source change the answer? - Practical check:
Turn the conclusion into a checklist of facts I must verify on the original page.
These prompts do not make an answer authoritative by themselves. They make the claims easier to inspect and reveal where the answer is relying on assumptions.
Use Bing’s advanced operators after AI Mode points you to a claim
If the references do not settle an issue, run a focused follow-up search. Microsoft’s advanced-search guidance documents quotation marks for exact phrases, parentheses for grouping, and Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and NOT. Bing uses only the first 10 terms in a query, so put the most important terms first.
Exact phrases with quotation marks
Use quotation marks when you need pages containing a specific wording, such as a regulation title, product feature, study name, or technical phrase.
"battery degradation warranty" manufacturer documentationExact matching can miss pages that use a legitimate synonym, so remove the quotes and repeat the search when the result set is too narrow.
Group alternatives with parentheses
Parentheses keep related alternatives together while the rest of the query remains fixed.

When source checking goes wrong
The AI Mode tab or reference controls are missing
Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Confirm that you are on a Bing results page, try the current version of your browser, and look for the AI Mode entry or reference controls again. If a control is unavailable, use the ordinary results links to locate primary and independent sources rather than assuming that the feature is universal.

Ask a follow-up that names the unsupported claim and requests the specific evidence. Then search the claim in quotation marks or with distinctive terms. If the original pages do not establish it, remove the claim from your notes or rewrite it as an unconfirmed possibility.
The references disagree
Do not average conflicting claims. Compare the publishers’ authority, dates, definitions, methods, and populations. A newer source may supersede an older rule; two sources may appear to disagree because they answer different questions. State the disagreement and the condition that produces it when no source clearly resolves the issue.
The answer sounds certain on a changing topic
Ask for the latest update date and then inspect that date on the original page. Microsoft’s current guidance does not provide a universal accuracy percentage for AI Mode, so fluency or confidence is not a reliability score. Currentness and direct evidence have to be checked claim by claim.
The first prompt was too broad
Start a new, narrower follow-up that names the audience, geography, time period, and decision. Request a list of subquestions, then investigate those subquestions separately. This reduces the chance that a general explanation will be mistaken for advice tailored to your situation.

A practical verification record
For a casual question, a short note may be enough. For a report, purchase, policy decision, or technical implementation, keep a compact audit trail:
- The exact question and any follow-up that changed its scope.
- The claim you intend to use, written in your own words.
- The publisher and page title for the supporting source.
- The publication or update date and applicable geography or edition.
- The passage, table, or data point that directly supports the claim.
- Any qualification, disagreement, or missing evidence.
- The date you checked the page, since web content can change.
This record prevents a common mistake: remembering the AI-generated wording while losing the condition that made the source’s statement true.
Responsible use for important decisions
Microsoft’s guidance states: “We encourage you to review sources, especially for important decisions or complex topics.” Apply that standard proportionally. A casual definition may need only a quick source check. A medical, legal, financial, safety, employment, security, or engineering decision requires primary documentation and, where appropriate, advice from a qualified professional.
Use AI Mode to discover terminology, map the debate, locate documents, and generate productive follow-up questions. Do not treat the generated response as a substitute for reading the controlling regulation, contract, technical specification, study, or official notice. The more costly the error, the more important it is to verify the exact source and its date.
Final checklist for checking a Bing AI answer
- Did you ask a focused question with the relevant location, date, version, or audience?
- Did you move from an overview to AI Mode when the topic required deeper exploration?
- Did you read the full response and separate its individual claims?
- Did you ask follow-ups about evidence, exceptions, uncertainty, and opposing views?
- Did you open the references and use Show all when it was available?
- Did you read the original pages rather than relying on snippets or titles?
- Did you check publisher authority, date, direct evidence, scope, and independent agreement?
- Did you use quotation marks, parentheses,
AND,OR, orNOTto investigate unresolved claims, keeping the most important terms within Bing’s first-10-term limit? - Did you preserve the source’s qualifications instead of turning a conditional statement into a general rule?
The dependable workflow is simple: use AI Mode to explore, use its references to find the underlying pages, and make the final judgment from those pages and their evidence.
