Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

To alert when an always-on stream stops, run a monitor that polls YouTube’s Live Streaming API, sends timestamped status records to Azure Monitor, and use a scheduled-query alert to detect an inactive or errored input. Add a separate freshness condition so a failed monitor or ingestion path does not go unnoticed.
Decide what “stops” means for your channel
YouTube exposes several signals that describe different failures. Choose the one that matches the event you need to respond to; an encoder input going inactive is not the same as a broadcast ending or a health warning.

| Signal | What it tells you | Useful alert condition |
|---|---|---|
liveStream.status.streamStatus |
The state of the incoming stream. YouTube documents active, created, error, inactive, and ready. active means YouTube is receiving data; inactive means it is not. |
Alert when the expected input is inactive or error. See YouTube LiveStreams documentation. |
liveStream.status.healthStatus |
A separate diagnostic signal, not a duplicate of active/inactive. It can be good, ok, bad, or noData; health details include an update time and configuration issues. Issue severity can be info, warning, or error; documented error severity means the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. |
Optionally warn on health problems before they become an outage. See YouTube LiveStreams documentation. |
liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatus |
The lifecycle of the broadcast event, such as its scheduled, live, or ended state; it does not report whether encoder data is arriving. | Use it if the alert concerns the event lifecycle rather than input loss. Verify which resource corresponds to your always-on setup. See YouTube LiveBroadcasts documentation. |
| Monitor heartbeat / observation freshness | Whether your polling and ingestion process has recently reported. A missing record can mean the stream stopped, but can also mean the poller, credentials, network, or ingestion failed. | Alert when no fresh observation arrives within your chosen tolerance. |
The YouTube API describes inactive as the state in which the user is not receiving data via the stream. That is an input signal, not proof that every viewer sees the same failure at the same instant.

This is a reference architecture assembled from YouTube’s documented API fields and Azure Monitor’s documented ingestion and alert features. The official documentation does not describe a ready-made YouTube-to-Azure connector, so the polling application and its credentials are your responsibility.

- Identify the resource to monitor. Select the relevant YouTube
liveStreamresource and, if needed, its associated broadcast. Confirm that you are monitoring the stream input rather than relying only on the broadcast lifecycle. - Poll the YouTube Live Streaming API. Read
status.streamStatusandstatus.healthStatus. Decide how to handle API errors or missing fields; do not silently treat a failed poll as a healthy stream. - Emit a timestamped observation. Include an observation time, stream ID, channel or broadcast ID as useful, stream status, health status, health update time, and a monitor heartbeat. These are recommended fields for querying, not a schema mandated by YouTube or Microsoft.
- Ingest the JSON into Azure Monitor Logs. Create a custom Log Analytics table and a data collection rule (DCR) that accepts the record and routes it to that table. The application sends JSON matching the DCR’s expected input structure through the Azure Monitor Logs Ingestion API. The application needs an app registration with access to the DCR.
- Create a scheduled-query log alert. Run KQL against the custom table to detect explicit unhealthy states and stale observations. Azure Monitor evaluates the query on a schedule; the actual detection time depends on polling, ingestion, evaluation, and delivery.
- Attach an action group. Configure email or an automated action such as an Azure Function, Logic App, or webhook to receive the alert.
Design alert logic for both outage and blind spots
Alert on an explicit unhealthy state
Use the latest observation for the monitored stream and alert when its input state is inactive or error. If you also care about early warning, add a separate condition for health status or configuration issues, with severity thresholds appropriate to your operations. Keep lifecycle alerts separate if a scheduled broadcast ending is not itself an outage.
Alert when observations go stale
An alert that only looks for an explicit inactive status can miss a stopped poller or failed ingestion. Store timestamps and a heartbeat, then alert if no observation has arrived within a timeout you choose. Set that timeout using your operational tolerance and account for your polling interval, ingestion delay, and query evaluation frequency; one old record alone is not enough to establish a universal threshold.

Choose logs or a custom metric deliberately
Log search alerts let you apply KQL to the status records and combine conditions such as state and freshness. If the monitor publishes a custom metric heartbeat and the main requirement is detecting missing data, a metric alert may be preferable. Microsoft cautions that log alerts can be more latent for absence detection. Alert characteristics and costs depend on alert type and configuration; log-alert costs depend on query evaluation interval, while metric-alert costs are based on time series. Check current Azure pricing for your region and expected volume. See Microsoft’s Azure Monitor alert types documentation.
Do not promise a fixed detection time
End-to-end delay includes API polling, ingestion, alert evaluation, and action delivery. The documentation does not establish a universally safe YouTube polling cadence, an end-to-end stop-detection time, or a latency guarantee for a particular channel. Choose thresholds for your service’s tolerance and test the complete path rather than assuming an alert is immediate.

Configure delivery and protect the notification path
Azure Monitor action groups can notify people or invoke automation, including Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and webhooks. For integrations, ensure the receiving endpoint understands the payload and has suitable authentication. A secure webhook uses Microsoft Entra ID and does not support basic authentication; Microsoft recommends Logic Apps where a target needs a different schema. The common alert schema standardizes essentials, context, and custom properties across supported alert types.
Webhook delivery is not infallible. Microsoft documents retry intervals of 5, 20, 5, 40, and 5 seconds between attempts; after retries fail, the action group does not call that endpoint for 15 minutes. Make the receiving endpoint resilient and monitor the alert route itself. See Microsoft’s action group documentation.

Validate failure and recovery before relying on alerts
- Confirm that a healthy stream produces fresh records with the expected stream ID and status.
- Test an explicit unhealthy state, if you can do so safely, and verify the query identifies the intended stream rather than another channel or broadcast.
- Test the stale-observation rule by stopping or isolating the monitor or ingestion path in a controlled environment.
- Confirm the chosen action arrives, that the payload can be processed, and that recovery or resolution is handled as intended.
- Check that a delayed observation, transient API error, or ingestion delay does not create an unacceptable alert storm.
Azure documentation establishes the individual API fields and monitoring components, but not a supported turnkey connector or a promised stop-detection time. Treat the whole monitoring chain—including credentials, poller, ingestion, query, and notification—as part of the system you operate.
Or let it run in the cloud
Azure Monitor alerts tell you about signals your monitor can collect; they do not keep the YouTube stream running. If the stream is a loop of uploaded videos and you want to avoid leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a camera feed.
