How to Use Audible’s Listening Features to Get More Out of Audiobooks

Audible’s iOS and Android apps include controls for narration speed, sleep timers, chapter navigation, playback position, and more. You can tailor the player to how you listen, then use Alexa or a car interface when you want fewer screen interactions. Some tools are app-only, and car features depend on your device and vehicle.

Adjust playback to suit your listening

Change narration speed

Open a title in the Audible app and use the narration-speed control in the player to make the voice faster or slower. Audible’s current help index documents the feature, but does not establish a specific range of speeds here; the available options may depend on the app version. Try a setting that feels comfortable rather than assuming one speed works for every narrator or listener. See Audible Help’s Listen in the app.

Set progress and skip controls

To change how the player behaves, go to Profile > Settings > Player. Player settings let you choose whether progress is shown for the current chapter or the full title, adjust the number of seconds moved by the skip buttons, manage the mini-player time display, and control screen auto-lock. These options are useful if you prefer a quick rewind or want to see how far you are through a chapter rather than the whole book. Audible documents the settings in Player Settings.

Set a sleep timer or listening cutoff

While a title is playing, open the player and select Timer. Choose a preset duration or create and save a custom one. Playback stops when the timer expires. Audible describes the feature as one that lets you control when an audiobook stops so you do not lose your place; the timer help page is dated September 3, 2026: Use timer.

Jump to chapters and revisit passages

Choose a chapter in the app

In the player, open Chapters and select the chapter or episode you want. Chapter navigation is also available in Audible Cloud Player and on Fire TV when browsing with a paired remote. Exact layouts can differ by platform. Audible’s Navigate chapters page was updated December 5, 2025.

Use Alexa for chapter changes

On a supported Alexa-enabled device, try commands such as “Alexa, next chapter” or “Alexa, go to chapter number 7.” Alexa can also control playback, but it does not support clips and bookmarks, ratings and reviews, listening log, or marking a title as finished. Audible’s Alexa guidance is dated September 14, 2026: Listen with Alexa.

Sync your place between devices

Audible says listening position syncs across devices when the setting is enabled. To check it, open Profile > Settings > Player and turn on Sync listening position. If your place is not updating, Audible suggests turning the setting off and back on to reset the connection. To continue listening, press Play in the mini player or use your device’s lock-screen controls. See Audible’s app listening help for details.

Choose the right controls for Alexa or a car

Listening method Useful controls Limits to know
Audible iOS or Android app Player settings, narration speed, timer, chapter selection, and app playback controls. Audible says its player settings are available only in the iOS and Android apps.
Alexa Voice control for playback and chapter changes. In-app Alexa requires microphone access and Alexa enabled; it works only while Audible is open, not when the screen is locked or you are using another app, even if Audible audio continues in the background. Clips and bookmarks, ratings and reviews, listening log, and marking a title finished are unsupported.
Car Mode A simplified screen with Alexa tap-to-talk, Play/Pause, Go Back 30 Seconds, and Add a Bookmark. Automatic Car Mode can launch when the phone connects to the car by Bluetooth. Car setup and compatibility vary.
Other car connections Audible lists Bluetooth, USB, AUX, Android Auto, Android Automotive OS, Apple CarPlay, Waze, and select built-in vehicle apps. Availability depends on the vehicle, phone, and supported integration.

Use Alexa without assuming it works hands-free in every situation

Alexa voice commands are useful when the compatible device or app is ready to receive them. For in-app Alexa, keep Audible open and make sure the app has microphone access; it will not respond through that feature while the phone is locked or another app is in use. For the supported commands and exclusions, consult Audible’s Alexa help.

Set up car listening before you drive

Choose the connection your car supports—such as Bluetooth, USB, AUX, Android Auto, Android Automotive OS, Apple CarPlay, Waze, or a built-in vehicle app—and follow the setup for that vehicle. If you may lose network access, download the title in advance. Audible warns listeners not to interact with the app while driving. Its car guidance, dated October 24, 2025, is at Listen in your car.
