Use Playwright to render the site in Hindi and English, then call Argos CI’s argosScreenshot for each language with a stable, language-specific name. Argos compares each capture with its own accepted baseline, so a Hindi page is checked against Hindi—not against the English translation. The Playwright quickstart provides the capture and upload workflow; choosing how your application switches locale is your responsibility.

How the Hindi–English comparison works

Visual regression testing asks whether a page changed unexpectedly compared with an approved reference. It does not ask whether two translations look identical. Hindi and English can differ in glyphs, text length, line wrapping, and layout. Give each language a distinct, stable screenshot name, such as homepage-hi and homepage-en, so Argos can match each capture to its corresponding baseline. Argos documents separate baselines for locale variants in Storybook modes; for Playwright, applying that idea with distinct names is the practical way to identify the variants.

The workflow uses the Argos Playwright Quickstart and the @argos-ci/playwright SDK. It does not supply a ready-made Hindi/English fixture or language switcher for your application.

Set up Argos CI and Playwright

  1. Install @argos-ci/playwright using your package manager, following the current Argos Playwright Quickstart.
  2. Add the Argos reporter to playwright.config.ts as shown in the quickstart. Configure its project token or supported authentication method for your CI environment.
  3. Store the Argos token as a CI secret and make it available to the test job as ARGOS_TOKEN, or use the reporter’s supported token option. The official example uses GitHub Actions, but the quickstart also describes passing authentication through other CI providers.
  4. Run the Playwright test suite in CI. Keep the same browser, operating system, browser settings, and headless mode for baseline and comparison runs.

For text-rendering consistency, the Argos reporter example also demonstrates disabling LCD text and font hinting. Apply those settings consistently where relevant to your environment; they reduce one source of rendering variation but do not remove all environment-dependent differences.

Render and capture both language states

Make the application enter each language through its real localized route, locale switch, or application setup. Wait until the correct language is visible and the page is in a stable state before capturing it. The locale setup below is deliberately represented as an application-specific helper: implement it using your own routing, UI, or test fixture. The exact mechanism is not prescribed by Argos.

In the test, call argosScreenshot(page, name) for each state. The package import and reporter configuration should match the current Argos quickstart and your installed SDK version.

import { test } from '@playwright/test';
import { argosScreenshot } from '@argos-ci/playwright';

// Implement this helper for your application: use its locale route,
// locale switcher, or test setup, then wait for the rendered state.
async function setLocale(page, locale) {
  // Application-specific example: adapt to your app's actual routes.
  await page.goto(`https://example.com/${locale}/`);
  await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
}

test('homepage renders correctly in Hindi and English', async ({ page }) => {
  await setLocale(page, 'hi');
  await argosScreenshot(page, 'homepage-hi');

  await setLocale(page, 'en');
  await argosScreenshot(page, 'homepage-en');
});

Replace https://example.com and the route convention with your site’s actual implementation. If your locale switch changes the page without navigation, use that control instead and wait for a reliable indication that the requested language has rendered. A generic network-idle wait may not be suitable for every app; use a selector or other application-specific readiness check when needed.

Choose screenshot names that remain stable

Argos matches captures to baselines by screenshot name. Keep names descriptive and consistent across runs: for example, homepage-hi and homepage-en. Avoid names that include changing values such as timestamps or random identifiers, which prevent a capture from referring to the intended baseline. Include the page and language in the name when your suite covers multiple pages or locales.

Wait for a meaningful visual state

Capture only after the locale switch has taken effect and the content you care about is present. For applications with delayed translation loading, route transitions, or asynchronous components, wait for a language-specific heading or other stable selector rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready. Also control animations or other dynamic content if they make screenshots inconsistent.

Establish baselines and review pull requests

  1. Run the configured workflow on the default branch to establish accepted reference screenshots for both names.
  2. Open a pull request and let CI capture the Hindi and English variants using those same names.
  3. Review each language capture against its corresponding intended reference in the Argos pull-request check workflow.
  4. Approve a changed baseline only after deciding that the visual change is expected. Reject or investigate diffs that represent regressions.

Argos’s quickstart notes that pull-request builds are marked orphan until a baseline exists. If this happens on a new project, run the workflow on the default branch first. Do not treat the Hindi and English screenshots as counterparts to compare pixel-for-pixel; inspect each against the accepted reference for that language.

Keep screenshot metadata useful

Argos SDKs generate screenshot metadata. Metadata fields can include the URL, viewport, browser, automation library, SDK, and test title. Put the locale in a stable screenshot name, test title, or tags so reviewers can tell which language a diff represents. See the Argos screenshot metadata reference for the documented fields.

Keep rendering conditions consistent

Identical application code can render differently across host operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, power sources, or headless modes. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance recommends generating comparisons in a consistent environment. Use the same CI image and browser configuration for baseline and pull-request runs where possible, and avoid comparing a local baseline with CI captures unless you have verified the environments produce compatible output.

If a diff appears without a meaningful application change, first check whether the browser version, OS image, fonts, viewport, or rendering settings changed. Stabilizing the environment helps distinguish product changes from rendering noise; it cannot make translated pages visually identical.

Fallback baselines when adding a locale

Argos documents fallback baselines as a way to bootstrap visual coverage for a new localization. A fallback can provide a starting reference when the new locale has no accepted baseline yet, but it does not make Hindi and English equivalent. Review the newly localized rendering and establish its appropriate reference rather than treating another language’s screenshot as proof of correctness. See Argos fallback baselines.

Argos CI or Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions?

Playwright also provides toHaveScreenshot(): it creates reference screenshots on an initial run and compares subsequent captures to those references. Argos is a fit when you want screenshots uploaded to a hosted CI review workflow and an Argos pull-request check. Native Playwright snapshots can suit teams that prefer to manage references alongside their test suite. Choose based on where baselines should live, how changes are approved, how the workflow fits your existing Playwright or Storybook setup, and whether you can keep rendering conditions consistent.

Troubleshooting

  • Pull-request captures are marked orphan: Run the workflow on the default branch to establish baselines before relying on normal pull-request comparisons.
  • Hindi appears under the English name, or vice versa: Check the locale route or switch logic and wait for the rendered language to update before calling argosScreenshot. Keep the language associated with each stable name.
  • Every run looks like a new screenshot: Check that names are identical across runs and do not contain timestamps, random IDs, or other changing values.
  • Unexpected diffs occur across machines or CI runs: Compare OS image, browser version, viewport, headless mode, browser settings, and font availability. Run baselines and comparisons under consistent conditions.
  • The page is captured before localized content is ready: Replace a broad or premature wait with an application-specific readiness check, such as a selector whose text or state confirms the intended locale.
  • The diff is large after introducing a locale: Do not approve it solely because the other language differs. Review the page as a localized design, then establish an appropriate baseline for that language.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a one-off screenshot rather than a CI visual-regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for named, per-locale Argos baselines and pull-request review; it can capture a URL directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Argos automatically switch my Playwright page between Hindi and English?

No. The locale route, switcher, or test setup is application-specific; the Argos Playwright quickstart provides capture and upload integration, not a Hindi/English fixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I compare a Hindi screenshot directly with the English screenshot?

No. Compare each language against its own accepted baseline; different scripts and text lengths naturally produce different pixels.
