You can use Apple Notes on a Windows PC through iCloud.com/notes. Apple does not document a native Windows Notes app; its supported Windows workflow is the browser version. It can handle everyday notes, folders, search and some attachment tasks, but it is not a full replacement for the iPhone, iPad or Mac app. Most importantly, only notes stored in iCloud appear there.
What you need
- An Apple Account and an internet connection. iCloud requires both, and Apple recommends keeping software up to date: Apple Account and iCloud requirements.
- Notes syncing enabled for iCloud on the Apple device that holds your notes.
- A current version of Firefox, Chrome, Edge or Opera on Windows. Apple recommends these browsers for iCloud.com: iCloud.com system requirements.
- Access to a trusted device or phone number if Apple asks you to verify your sign-in. Apple may offer a verification code, security key or another supported method: Sign in to iCloud.com.
Turn on iCloud Notes on your Apple device
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then find Notes among the apps using iCloud.
- Turn on the Notes sync control. Depending on your iOS or iPadOS version, it may be labeled Sync this iPhone or similarly.
- In Notes, check that the notes you want on Windows are in the iCloud folder, not On My iPhone or another account’s section.
Mac
- macOS 15 or later: Apple menu → System Settings → your Apple Account name → iCloud. Under “Saved to iCloud,” select Notes and turn on Sync this Mac.
- macOS 13.3–14: System Settings → your Apple Account name → iCloud → Show All or Show More Apps → Notes → turn on syncing.
- macOS 13–13.2: Turn on Notes in iCloud settings.
Apple’s version-specific setup instructions are at Set up iCloud for Notes. Labels and layout can change between operating-system versions.
Open Apple Notes on Windows
- Open a current version of Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Opera.
- Go to https://www.icloud.com/notes.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account used for Notes on your iPhone, iPad or Mac, and complete verification if prompted.
- If iCloud opens to its home page, choose Notes.
- Select a folder in the sidebar, then select a note to read or edit it.
Apple’s guide to Notes on iCloud.com describes the web features and the restriction to iCloud-stored notes: Notes on iCloud.com.
What you can do in the browser
The web app supports core tasks: creating and editing notes, managing lists, organizing notes in folders, searching, viewing or downloading attachments, deleting notes, recovering deleted notes, and sharing notes or folders. For routine text notes, checklists and folder-based organization, it can be a practical Windows companion.

Create and organize
- Choose the new-note control to start a note, then enter its title and content.
- Use the list or checklist controls when you need a list.
- Choose a folder in the sidebar, or use the folder controls to create or move notes as needed.
- Give changes time to sync before closing the browser or switching devices.
Toolbar icons and labels can vary as Apple updates iCloud.com, so use the control’s function rather than relying on a particular icon shape.
Attachments, sharing and recovery
Apple documents viewing or downloading attachments in Notes on iCloud.com. That does not establish that every attachment type can be uploaded, edited or displayed exactly as in the native app. Test important scans, drawings, handwriting, previews and embedded media before depending on a Windows-only workflow.

You can also share notes or folders from the web app. Sharing is not a guarantee of identical collaboration behavior for every recipient: permissions, account type, region and feature availability can matter. Apple notes that iCloud features vary by account type, country and region.
To restore a deleted note, open Notes on iCloud.com, look for Recently Deleted or the recovery option, select the note and use the restore or move control to put it back in a folder. Apple documents recovery but a retention period is not stated here; do not rely on a specific number of days. See Recover deleted iCloud information.

Why some notes are missing
iCloud.com shows only notes stored in iCloud. Notes in On My iPhone, Gmail, Yahoo, Exchange or another account do not appear in the iCloud Notes web app. If only part of your library is visible, check the storage location before assuming syncing is broken.
- On the Apple device, open Notes and inspect the account or folder headings for the missing note.
- Confirm Notes syncing is enabled in iCloud settings on that device.
- Check that the browser is signed in to the Apple Account used by the device.
- If a note belongs to another account, access that account’s notes through its own supported service or move the note to iCloud using the Apple device.
Locked notes and iCloud web-access settings
A locked note may require a different password
Apple says a locked note can be viewed on iCloud.com if it uses the Notes-specific password. A note locked with an iPhone or iPad passcode or a Mac login password cannot be viewed on iCloud.com. Locked notes relock after inactivity or when the browser window closes. If your notes use different Notes passwords, you may need to enter the relevant old and new passwords. Details: Lock or unlock notes on iCloud.com.

Web access may be disabled
If sign-in succeeds but Notes is unavailable, your iCloud web access setting may be off. Apple lets users restrict access to iCloud data on the web; with it disabled, data is available only on trusted devices. Advanced Data Protection automatically turns off web access. You can temporarily approve access from a trusted device, but approval may be needed for each new data category and can expire after an hour or when the session ends. See Manage access to iCloud data on the web.
Make it feel more like a Windows app
Edge and Chrome can create a shortcut or install a website as an app-like window. This is still iCloud.com in a browser, not a native Apple Notes installation, and its menu wording varies by browser version.

Limits to know before relying on it
- No documented native Windows Notes client: Apple’s documented Windows route is iCloud.com. iCloud for Windows is not an installation of the Apple Notes app. Apple’s current PC requirements list Windows 11 and iCloud for Windows 15, but Notes setup directs users to the browser: iCloud system requirements and Notes setup and browser access.
- Internet-first workflow: Apple’s documented Windows method is browser access; reliable offline editing and later synchronization are not established for it. If offline Windows work is essential, choose a notes service with a documented Windows app and offline behavior.
- Not full feature parity: Apple documents core web capabilities, not equivalence with the native iPhone, iPad or Mac app. Rich content and attachments may behave differently.
- No established Windows bulk-export route: Apple’s cited web documentation covers individual note management and recovery, not a complete bulk-export workflow from Windows. For migration, consider copying important notes individually or using export options available in the native app; scrutinize third-party tools for permissions, privacy, attachment handling and export format.
When to keep Apple Notes—and when to switch
Stay with Apple Notes plus iCloud.com if you already use it on an iPhone or iPad, your important notes are in iCloud, and browser access covers your needs for text, lists, folders, search and occasional attachments.
Consider another service if you need dependable offline Windows editing, a full desktop client, bulk export, broad integrations or collaboration across non-Apple accounts. These options serve different workflows rather than acting as identical replacements:
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OneNote | Windows-first users who want notebooks, sections, pages and Microsoft integration. | A different organizational model; features vary by version. Microsoft documents sync across platforms: Sync a notebook in OneNote. |
| Sticky Notes | Short reminders and quick notes integrated with Windows and Outlook. | Not a rich-notes replacement for folders, attachments or long documents. Microsoft explains sync availability at See Sticky Notes on other devices and the web. |
| Evernote | Users prioritizing document capture and web clipping in a subscription-based system. | Plan limits and price should be checked with the provider; it is not an Apple Notes client. |
| Obsidian | People who want local Markdown files and portability. | Sync is a separate consideration and may require configuration or a paid service. |
| Notion | Teams or individuals wanting a collaborative workspace and databases. | More workspace-oriented than a lightweight personal notes app. |
| Simplenote | Users who mainly need lightweight cross-platform text notes. | Less suited to readers who depend on richer media or Apple Notes-specific organization. |
Quick troubleshooting
Notes is missing from iCloud.com
- Confirm you are using a current supported browser on Windows.
- Check that you signed in to the correct Apple Account.
- Check whether iCloud web access is disabled or Advanced Data Protection is blocking it.
- Confirm Notes syncing is on for the Apple device.
Some notes appear, but others do not
- Check whether the missing notes are under On My iPhone or in a third-party account rather than iCloud.
- Allow time for sync, then refresh iCloud.com.
- Verify the account shown in the browser matches the Apple device.
Changes are not appearing on another device
- Check that both devices use the same Apple Account and Notes sync is enabled.
- Confirm the Windows browser is online and refresh the page.
- Check the folder containing the note; avoid simultaneous edits in multiple places while diagnosing the issue.
A locked note will not open
Check whether it was locked with a Notes-specific password or with the device passcode or Mac login password. Apple’s web limitation applies to the latter.
