How to Use Angstrom Levy’s Portals Effectively in Invincible VS (2026 Guide)

Angstrom Levy wins by making movement dangerous. Use the vertical Portal to relocate yourself, the opponent, or an orb, and use Ground Portal as a horizontal defensive threat with Armor Break and an uppercut follow-up. Place either portal where it changes the opponent’s next decision, then add orb timing, assists, and team positioning only after you can control the portal on its own.

Angstrom arrived in Invincible VS on October 13, 2026, as the game’s 21st playable character and third DLC fighter. His command labels, properties, and timing can change in patches, so verify the current in-game command list before relying on exact buttons or combo timing.

What Angstrom’s portal game is designed to do

Executive Producer Mike Willette describes Angstrom as “a zoning-focused fighter with a strong emphasis on setups and strategy.” That description is more useful than treating portals as simple teleport buttons. Each portal asks the opponent to account for another route through the screen while Angstrom decides whether to reposition, send an orb, attack, or wait.

The official move listing gives Angstrom two distinct portal tools. The regular Portal is vertical and can teleport Angstrom, the opponent, or one of his projectiles. A directional tap changes where it appears, and Angstrom can use it for a teleporting overhead kick. Ground Portal is horizontal, is explicitly described as defensive, can teleport Angstrom or the opponent, has Armor Break, and gives Angstrom an uppercut when he uses it.

Those descriptions establish the tools, not guaranteed traps, frame advantages, or universal combos. The practical method is to place a portal so that the opponent must make a visible choice, observe that choice, and punish the response rather than committing to a memorized route.

Portal tools at a glance

Tool Orientation Who or what it can teleport Stated properties Best strategic question
Portal Vertical Angstrom, the opponent, or one of his projectiles Directional placement; teleporting overhead kick when Angstrom uses it Which position or projectile route does the opponent need to respect?
Ground Portal Horizontal Angstrom or the opponent Defensive tool, Armor Break, uppercut when Angstrom uses it, directional placement Can this interrupt pressure or force the opponent to stop attacking?

The available official descriptions do not establish startup, recovery, invulnerability duration, damage, safety, or frame advantage. Do not assume Ground Portal is a universal reversal or that a particular Portal location is automatically safe.

Check the current controls before practicing

The indexed move list labels Portal as Neutral Special, Back Special, Boosted Neutral Special, and Boosted Back Special. Ground Portal appears as Down Special, Back Down Special, and Boosted Down Special. Fastball is listed as Forward Special.

These labels describe directional inputs rather than a universal platform button layout. Open Angstrom’s command list in the current build and note which button is assigned to Special, how Boosted versions are activated, and whether your control scheme changes the notation. Record the command in your own notes before entering Training Mode; this prevents practicing the wrong version after a patch or control remap.

  • Confirm the normal and Boosted versions of Portal.
  • Confirm the normal and Back versions of Portal, since the directional input changes placement.
  • Confirm Down Special, Back Down Special, and Boosted Down Special for Ground Portal.
  • Confirm how Fastball and its charged version are triggered.
  • Check whether the current patch changed movement, resource requirements, or animation timing.

How to place the vertical Portal

Start with a movement-denial location

Place the Portal where the opponent wants to stand or pass through, not merely where Angstrom is standing. In mid-screen, that can be the lane between Angstrom and an approaching character. Near a corner, it can cover the escape direction the opponent normally uses to leave the wall. Because a directional tap changes the Portal’s position, small adjustments should be part of your neutral movement rather than a one-time setup.

This is a strategic inference from the Portal’s teleport and projectile functions, not a tested guaranteed trap. The opponent may jump, wait, attack the portal, or retreat. Your goal is to make that decision legible and respond to it.

Use the Portal to create a positioning question

Before placing it, decide what you want the opponent to fear. If you want them to stop advancing, put the Portal in the approach lane and be ready to send an orb or relocate yourself. If you want them to hold still, place it behind or beside them so a teleport threat limits their retreat. If you want to escape, place it along the route Angstrom needs to reach rather than directly on top of the opponent.

A useful mental checklist is: “What happens if they walk forward? What happens if they jump? What happens if they block? What happens if they attack the portal?” If you cannot answer those four questions, the placement is probably decorative rather than purposeful.

Choose the teleport target deliberately

The move description allows the Portal to affect three categories: Angstrom, the opponent, or a projectile. Treat each as a separate option in your plan.

  • Teleport Angstrom: Use the Portal to change your side of the screen, leave a predictable lane, or approach from an angle the opponent was not covering. Do not assume the teleport itself is invulnerable; test whether attacks can catch the start or end of the animation.
  • Teleport the opponent: Consider this when moving them would remove their preferred spacing or expose them to your next zoning decision. Check in Training Mode whether the opponent can influence their trajectory or act immediately after arriving.
  • Teleport a projectile: Use the Portal to make an orb arrive from an unexpected direction or to keep pressure active while Angstrom stays mobile. The exact route and timing depend on the orb version and Portal placement, so verify each pattern in the current build.

Use the overhead kick as a layer, not a default

Angstrom’s Portal includes a teleporting overhead kick when he uses it. That gives a blocking opponent another thing to consider, but repeatedly selecting the overhead makes your intention easy to read. First establish that the Portal can alter movement or deliver an orb; then occasionally take the kick when the opponent is waiting for the zoning option.

Because startup and safety data are not established here, do not label the kick a guaranteed opener, safe jump, or punish without testing the exact situation. Record which spacing lets the kick connect, what happens when it is blocked, and whether the opponent can interrupt the approach.

How to use Ground Portal defensively

Recognize the defensive purpose

Ground Portal is the horizontal counterpart to the vertical Portal. The official listing calls it defensive, and it can teleport Angstrom or the opponent. Its Armor Break property means it has a stated interaction with armor, while the uppercut follow-up gives Angstrom an offensive consequence when he uses the portal himself.

Use it as a way to challenge the opponent’s pressure pattern, not as an automatic escape button. If the move has vulnerable startup, recovery, or a punishable landing in a particular matchup, mashing it whenever you are under attack will lose more often than it wins. Those timing and safety values must be checked in Training Mode or the current frame-data resources.

Place it where pressure is actually occurring

When an opponent is advancing along the ground, position Ground Portal across the lane they need to occupy. A portal placed too far away may not affect the sequence; one placed directly in a predictable spot may be attacked or baited. Test several distances against the opponent’s fastest approach and common low, overhead, and throw options.

If Angstrom uses the portal and the uppercut comes out, observe whether the uppercut reaches the attacker, trades, or whiffs at each distance. The official property confirms the uppercut exists, but not that it punishes every pressure string.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Armor Break with evidence

Armor Break is valuable only in situations where the opponent is relying on armor. Lab the specific armored move, its timing, and the distance at which Ground Portal connects. Do not generalize one successful test into “Ground Portal beats armor” in every circumstance; armor rules, hitboxes, and timing can differ by move and patch.

Integrate Fastball and charged orbs

Fastball summons and launches an orb, while the charged version returns to Angstrom. The developer also says that portals and orbs have unique interactions that can manipulate the fight, apply pressure, and create setups. The published description does not enumerate every interaction, so treat orb routes as experiments rather than established combo notation.

Learn each object separately first

  1. Record the normal Fastball trajectory and recovery without a portal.
  2. Record the charged version and confirm when the orb returns to Angstrom.
  3. Place a vertical Portal at several distances and send the normal orb through or near it.
  4. Repeat with the charged version and note whether the return changes the timing or position.
  5. Test whether Angstrom can teleport, kick, or move while the orb is active.
  6. Have the training dummy block, jump, attack, and back away so you can see which responses the setup actually covers.

Write down only interactions you can reproduce in the current version. A visual overlap is not proof that an orb was teleported, and a single successful hit is not proof of a guaranteed setup.

Build pressure from timing differences

Once you understand an orb’s route, vary the time between the orb and the Portal. A simultaneous action may cover a defensive response, while a delayed action may catch an opponent who blocks the first threat and then moves. The purpose is to make the opponent respond to two timings, not to perform a fixed sequence regardless of their behavior.

Keep an escape option available. If Angstrom spends every action on an orb and Portal, a fast character may reach him before the setup pays off. Alternate between sending the orb, relocating, and simply waiting to punish a reckless approach.

A practical neutral-game plan

At long range

Use space to decide where the next Portal matters. Place it between Angstrom and the opponent, then watch whether they jump, dash, or hold position. A projectile route can make the Portal relevant without forcing Angstrom to walk forward. If the opponent refuses to approach, adjust the Portal rather than throwing repeated attacks into a stationary guard.

At mid-range

Mid-range is where careless Portal placement is easiest to punish. Place the tool far enough to give Angstrom a meaningful route, but close enough that the opponent cannot ignore it. Be ready to block after the placement; zoning characters still need to respect direct attacks during recovery.

When the opponent reaches the corner

A cornered opponent has fewer movement choices, so a Portal can cover the escape lane and let Angstrom threaten a kick or projectile without standing at point-blank range. Do not assume the corner makes a trap airtight. Test whether the opponent can jump over the Portal, attack Angstrom before the teleport, or use an assist to interrupt the setup.

Turning portal pressure into offense

Layer the threats in a simple order

  1. Place the Portal where the opponent must react.
  2. Observe the first defensive response without spending every resource.
  3. Choose one answer: orb, teleport, overhead kick, or a normal attack.
  4. After the opponent adapts, change only one layer so you know what caused the opening.

This method prevents Angstrom’s offense from becoming visual noise. If the opponent blocks the kick, send an orb next time. If they jump away from the orb, hold your ground and cover the landing. If they attack the Portal, move its position and punish the recovery only if your test confirms the timing.

Do not call untested routes guaranteed

The available official material does not provide frame data, damage values, or a complete combo chart. Present any route you discover as situation-dependent until you have tested it against blocking, reversal attempts, jumping, and different character sizes. Patch changes can also alter a route that worked previously.

Using portals in 3v3 matches

Willette says portals, orbs, teammates, and assists create additional team strategies. Start with a solo setup before adding team variables. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to tell whether an assist protected Angstrom, extended pressure, or merely covered a mistake.

Test one assist at a time

For each teammate, ask one concrete question: does the assist cover Portal recovery, hold the opponent in place long enough for an orb, protect a teleport, or force the opponent to block while Angstrom changes position? These are test goals, not confirmed properties of any specific assist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the team plan readable

Use the assist to support a Portal decision you already understand. If Angstrom’s solo setup fails because the opponent can jump, an assist that controls the air may solve that specific problem. If the setup fails because Angstrom is punished during recovery, an assist that occupies the opponent may help. Do not assume every assist creates a guaranteed team combo.

Training Mode drills that answer the important questions

Placement drill

Mark three positions on screen: close, mid-range, and far. Place the vertical Portal at each position and test Angstrom’s teleport, the opponent teleport, and a projectile route. Repeat with directional taps so you know how much the location changes.

Defense drill

Record the dummy using its fastest grounded approach, a jump-in, a throw attempt, and an armored attack. Try Ground Portal from several distances. Note whether it interrupts, trades, whiffs, or gets punished. This is the only reliable way to decide when the defensive tool is appropriate for a particular matchup.

Orb interaction drill

Test normal and charged Fastball with the Portal inactive, then repeat with the Portal active. Record the orb’s path, Angstrom’s position, the opponent’s available responses, and whether the interaction changes when the Portal is moved. Save a short clip of each repeatable result so you can compare it after patches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block-and-punish drill

Set the dummy to block the overhead kick and to attempt an immediate attack afterward. Test Angstrom’s follow-up options and record the spacing. If the dummy can punish, treat the kick as a commitment rather than a safe pressure reset.

Common mistakes and corrections

  • Placing portals without a question: Decide which movement or response the placement is meant to influence.
  • Assuming teleport equals invulnerability: Test the start and end of the animation against the opponent’s fastest attack.
  • Using Ground Portal on every defensive turn: Check its actual timing and recovery before treating it as a reversal.
  • Repeating the overhead kick: Establish the projectile and movement threats first, then use the kick as a less frequent layer.
  • Stacking orb, Portal, and assist immediately: Add one variable at a time so you can identify what works.
  • Relying on old notation: Recheck the in-game command list after updates, especially for Boosted versions.
  • Calling a setup guaranteed from one clip: Test blocking, jumping, attacking, and multiple character sizes.

A repeatable match flow

  1. Scout: Start with safe spacing and observe how the opponent approaches.
  2. Question: Place a Portal that challenges that approach without committing every option.
  3. Confirm: Watch the response and choose the matching teleport, orb, kick, or block.
  4. Layer: Change one timing or one Portal position after the opponent adapts.
  5. Reset: If the setup becomes predictable, move away and rebuild neutral instead of forcing it.
  6. Add the team element: Use an assist only after the solo interaction is understood.

Angstrom’s strength is not one magic Portal location. It is the accumulation of small positioning questions that make the opponent spend attention on movement, projectiles, and teleport threats at the same time.

Quick reference before a set

  • Vertical Portal: can affect Angstrom, the opponent, or a projectile; directional input changes its position; Angstrom can use it for an overhead kick.
  • Ground Portal: horizontal defensive tool; can affect Angstrom or the opponent; has Armor Break and an uppercut when Angstrom uses it.
  • Fastball: normal version launches an orb; charged version returns to Angstrom.
  • Exact startup, recovery, damage, safety, resource cost, and platform buttons: not established by the official descriptions; verify them in the current game.
  • Best lab location: Training Mode, using recorded approaches and repeatable orb and Portal tests.
