You can repurpose an old laptop to run a YouTube live stream through a computer encoder—but whether it can keep streaming around the clock depends on that laptop, your internet connection and power supply. YouTube does not publish one minimum specification or upload-speed figure that guarantees an old laptop will work continuously. Test your actual setup before relying on it, and only stream cartoons and audio you have the rights to use.
Check that your channel and content are ready
Confirm live-stream access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check that the channel can currently go live before spending time configuring the laptop. YouTube’s Help page Get started with live streaming describes its computer-and-encoder workflow.

Make sure you can broadcast the cartoons
Being able to watch a cartoon online does not mean you have permission to rebroadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that your rights cover every video, soundtrack, song and other audio element in the stream. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say content providers must have the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. The answer for a particular cartoon depends on the work, territory, licence and intended use; do not assume that a title is free to stream.

Separate copyright permission from monetization eligibility
YouTube’s monetization policies also apply to live streams. Under its policy update noted July 15, 2025, repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible as “inauthentic” content. Reused material needs significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value to qualify for monetization. Permission from a rights holder does not by itself establish that reused content meets monetization rules.

Prepare the laptop and test it before a long broadcast
- Check the machine you have. Find its operating system, processor, memory, storage and available encoder options. There is no YouTube-published minimum laptop specification that guarantees continuous streaming, so a model name or age alone cannot determine whether it will work.
- Check your connection and power. Use the internet connection and power arrangement you expect to use for the broadcast. YouTube does not give a universal upload-speed or electricity-cost figure for this use. Your local connection, laptop condition and power supply all affect the result.
- Choose an encoder and configure the stream. YouTube supports broadcasting from a computer with an encoder. Set the encoder to send the cartoon video and audio to the intended YouTube broadcast, and use a playback source or playlist that can continue through the material as you intend. The appropriate resolution, bitrate and other encoder settings depend on the source video, encoder and connection; the available guidance does not establish one setting that fits every old laptop or Indian connection. Do not assume a setting is suitable until you have tested it.
- Protect the stream key. Use the stream key or other connection method provided for your broadcast in YouTube Studio and enter it only in the encoder you are configuring. Treat a stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream. If you think it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Start with a short, monitored test. Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview before sharing the stream. Watch and listen for picture or audio problems, and keep the laptop in view while it runs. Note whether the encoder reports trouble, the stream disconnects, or the computer becomes unstable. A successful short test is useful evidence about your setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
- Extend the test before depending on it. Once the short test is satisfactory, monitor a longer session using the same laptop, encoder, connection and power setup. If the stream fails or the laptop becomes unstable, adjust the setup and test again rather than assuming it will recover unattended.
YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is encouragement to start with available equipment, not a promise that every older laptop can encode continuously.
Plan around archives and audience settings
Choose stream lengths with archive retention in mind
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. If a live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If retaining a YouTube archive matters, plan shorter sessions rather than relying on a single stream that runs beyond that point. YouTube also recommends keeping a local recording as a backup if you need a copy.

Set the audience accurately
Choose the audience designation that accurately describes the content. When a stream is set as made for kids, YouTube disables features including live chat and personalized ads; contextual ads may still be shown. See YouTube Help’s Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming for its guidance.
