On models with LG’s ColdWash option, select the cycle, press ColdWash, choose any permitted fabric settings, and press Start/Pause. On models without that button, choose an appropriate cold temperature through the cycle’s temperature control. Fill the washer with a full, suitable load and use the fastest spin speed the care labels allow so less water has to be removed in the dryer.
LG does not use one universal control layout. Cycles, temperature choices, option names and ColdWash availability vary by model and market, so treat the instructions below as a decision guide and confirm the exact sequence in your washer’s owner’s manual.

Start with the exact LG model
Energy-saving controls are not identical across LG front-load washers. One model may have a dedicated ColdWash button; another may offer only temperature modifiers; a third may restrict cold or warm choices according to the selected cycle. A control panel shown in an online guide for a different country or product family may not match your machine.

- Whether the machine lists ColdWash as a separate option.
- Which cycles allow the cold temperature or other modifiers you want to use.
- Whether the manual gives a model-specific load-size, time or fabric limitation.
The WM8000-series manual, for example, documents a ColdWash sequence and says that the option changes the cycle automatically. Its timing and load guidance should not be treated as a specification for every LG front-loader.
How washer energy use is reduced
A washer uses energy for several tasks, including heating water and turning the drum. ENERGY STAR identifies water heating as the dominant part of normal operating energy: about 90% goes to heating the water. That is why selecting cold water often has a larger effect than changing a minor cycle option. It does not mean every load should always be washed cold. Soil, fabric, care-label instructions and the selected cycle still determine the appropriate treatment.
Energy also matters after the wash. Water left in the clothes must be removed by a dryer or by air-drying. A washer cannot safely maximize extraction for every garment, but selecting a higher permitted spin speed can reduce the moisture that reaches the dryer. The most efficient routine is therefore a combination of a suitable cold setting, a properly filled drum and a fabric-safe spin speed, followed by air-drying whenever practical.
Which LG settings reduce energy?
Cold water or ColdWash
Water heating is normally the largest energy expense in a wash cycle. ENERGY STAR says that roughly 90% of clothes-washer operating energy goes to heating water and generally recommends cold washing. Cold water is therefore the broadly applicable first choice when the load, detergent and care label permit it.
LG’s WM8000 manual describes ColdWash this way: “Adding the COLDWASH™ option reduces energy usage and provides the same washing performance as a warm water wash.” That is a manufacturer statement for that manual and model family, not independent evidence that every LG washer or every stain will perform identically.
Full, properly sized loads
ENERGY STAR recommends waiting for a full load instead of repeatedly washing a few items. A full load uses the washer’s water and mechanical action more efficiently, but “full” does not mean packed tightly. Clothes need room to tumble and rinse. Follow the capacity and loading instructions in your manual, and use a smaller load when the cycle or option specifies one.
Build a full load from compatible items rather than delaying every load indefinitely. A drum filled with items that require different temperatures, cycles or spin speeds is not an efficient success if one garment is damaged or the load must be washed again. Sorting by care needs first lets you fill the machine without sacrificing fabric protection.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A suitable high spin speed
A faster spin extracts more water before the clothes reach the dryer. LG explains that this can shorten drying time and reduce drying energy. Spin speed is a fabric decision: sturdy cottons may tolerate a high setting, while delicate, loosely woven or shape-sensitive garments may require a slower speed. Use the care label and the cycle’s available options rather than choosing the highest number automatically.
Air-drying when practical
Line-drying or rack-drying avoids the dryer’s energy use altogether. It is most practical when local humidity, space and garment-care instructions allow it. If a dryer is necessary, the washer’s moisture-extracting spin setting becomes especially valuable. Transfer the finished load promptly and use a dryer program suitable for the fabric rather than applying a hotter treatment simply to shorten the cycle.
How to use ColdWash on a compatible LG washer
Use this sequence only when the owner’s manual for your model lists a ColdWash option. The WM8000 manual gives the following order:
Rank #2
- Concentrated detergent formula is effective yet gentle on clothes
- Contains cleaning agents with dirt, stain-fighting enzymes, and other thoughtfully chosen ingredients
- Laundry detergent for use in high efficiency and conventional washing machines
- Rain Water scented laundry detergent has a fragrance so clean. Drops of Rain Water fall on leaves and noses and fill the air
- Turn the washer on.
- Select the cycle that matches the fabric and soil level.
- Press ColdWash.
- Choose any other options that remain available for that cycle.
- Press Start/Pause to begin.
On the WM8000, selecting ColdWash automatically adjusts cycle settings. The manual says the option can add up to 10 minutes to the wash and recommends a load of less than 8 pounds for high wash efficiency. Those figures belong to the WM8000 guidance; do not apply them to another LG model unless its manual states the same limits.
ColdWash does not override the need to choose a fabric-appropriate cycle. Selecting it for a delicate item does not make a normal or heavy-duty cycle suitable for that item, and selecting it for a heavily oily load does not remove the need to follow the stain and care instructions.
If the display changes the estimated time after you press ColdWash, that is consistent with the WM8000 manual’s statement that the option can add time. The displayed estimate is not a promise that every LG model will add the same amount. Let the exact model’s controls and manual determine what happens.
How to choose cold water when there is no ColdWash button
Look for the temperature control associated with the selected cycle. Depending on the model, it may be labeled Temp, Wash Temp, or use choices such as Tap Cold, Cold, Warm and Hot. Set the desired temperature, select permitted modifiers, and start the cycle.
LG’s documentation makes two qualifications important:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The temperatures and modifiers available depend on the cycle already selected.
- The water entering the machine can be affected by household plumbing and by the distance from the water heater.
In LG USA guidance, Tap Cold means water supplied directly from the tap. The washer cannot control the actual temperature of that incoming water, so the displayed choice is not a promise of one precise temperature in every home. The first fill may feel different from a later fill as water standing in the pipes changes temperature.
If the control you want is dimmed or unavailable, do not force a different cycle merely to expose it. Choose the cycle that protects the fabric, then use the coldest permitted setting or consult the manual for an alternative. A cold setting on an unsuitable cycle is not a better energy choice than the correct cycle for the garment.
Match temperature and cycle to the load
Cold is a strong default for ordinary laundry, but it is not appropriate for every stain or garment. ENERGY STAR specifically qualifies its general cold-wash advice for oily stains. Care labels and the washer’s cycle descriptions take priority over a blanket energy rule.
| Load situation | Energy-conscious choice | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday lightly or normally soiled clothes | Use the fabric-appropriate cycle with cold water, or ColdWash where the model provides it. | Confirm that the cycle permits the cold setting and that the label allows machine washing. |
| Oily or greasy stains | Do not assume cold is the best treatment solely because it saves energy; select the temperature and stain method appropriate to the garment. | Read the care label and follow the detergent or pre-treatment directions. |
| Delicates or shape-sensitive items | Use the designated delicate cycle and its permitted temperature and spin choices. | Choose a gentle spin even if a faster spin would remove more water. |
| Durable items that can tolerate extraction | Use cold or ColdWash when suitable, then select a higher permitted spin speed. | Check the garment labels for spin restrictions and avoid overloading. |
| Mixed loads with conflicting labels | Use the setting that is safe for the most sensitive item, or separate the load. | Do not trade fabric damage for a small energy saving. |
Neither LG’s manual nor ENERGY STAR establishes one temperature that is best for every hygiene requirement, stain type, detergent or fabric. Treat cold washing as a conditional efficiency choice, not a universal rule. If a garment has a special sanitation, allergen or care instruction, follow that instruction rather than assuming the lowest temperature is always suitable.

Detergent and cold-water washing
Cold washing does not require a particular brand of detergent, and the cited LG guidance does not establish that one product is necessary. Use the detergent amount and type recommended for your washer, load and product instructions. A detergent formulated for cold water may be a practical optional aid if you regularly wash cold, but it is not a substitute for selecting the correct cycle, treating stains or following care labels.
Rank #3
- 6X BOOSTED CLEAN: Tide liquid laundry detergent is engineered to be 4X cleaner and 2X fresher vs Tide Simply liquid detergent
- TOUGH ON COMMON STAINS: Works on 100% of common stains and has 10X the grease fighting ingredients vs leading bargain detergent
- CONCENTRATED FORMULA: Less water per drop vs leading bargain liquid detergents provides more cleaning power
- LONG-LASTING FRESHNESS: Enjoy the original washing detergent scent you love. Made to last all day, Tide liquid laundry detergent provides freshness that you can count on
- ORIGINAL SCENT FRESHNESS: Original scent helps keep laundry smelling fresh throughout the day
Do not compensate for a cold setting by adding excessive detergent. Overdosing can leave residue and may require another rinse or wash, which removes any efficiency benefit. Conversely, a visibly oily stain may need pre-treatment or a different temperature rather than simply more detergent in a cold cycle.
Spin speed: reduce dryer work without damaging clothes
After temperature, moisture removal is the most useful setting to consider when laundry will be machine-dried. A higher spin speed leaves less water in the load, which can reduce dryer run time and energy. Select it before starting the cycle if the option is available.
When a higher spin is reasonable
- Use it for fabrics whose care labels permit vigorous extraction.
- Use it when the load is going into a dryer and reducing moisture will shorten drying.
- Use it with a properly balanced load; do not add unsuitable items just to fill the drum.
When to slow the spin
- Choose a lower speed for delicate, loosely knitted, embellished or shape-sensitive garments when their labels call for it.
- Use the cycle recommended for items that can stretch, crease or snag.
- Do not interpret a lower spin as a fault; it may be the protective setting for that fabric.
Air-dry items that can safely be dried that way. For garments that must be tumble-dried, the best compromise is usually a cold, fabric-safe wash followed by the highest safe spin speed.

ColdWash versus a regular cold-temperature setting
There is no universal LG menu comparison because the available controls are model-specific. Use these distinctions when reading your manual or comparing two machines in the same market:
| Question | Dedicated ColdWash option | Temperature-only control |
|---|---|---|
| How is it selected? | Press the model’s ColdWash control after choosing a cycle. | Choose a cold temperature through the cycle’s temperature control. |
| Does the washer alter the cycle? | The WM8000 manual says ColdWash automatically adjusts cycle settings. | The extent of any automatic adjustment depends on the model and is not established universally. |
| Is a time trade-off documented? | The WM8000 manual says the option can add up to 10 minutes. | No general time figure is established; check the model’s manual or display. |
| Is a load limit documented? | The WM8000 manual recommends less than 8 pounds for high wash efficiency. | Use the ordinary capacity and cycle limits unless the manual gives another restriction. |
| What can be compared safely? | Availability, allowed cycles, documented time and load guidance for the exact model. | Available temperatures, cycle restrictions and actual household water conditions. |
Do not compare a feature list from one country with a washer sold in another. Product names, options and even the control sequence can differ by regional variant. If you are shopping, compare the exact model number, market, permitted cycles, temperature choices, documented ColdWash behavior and spin options—not just a similar-looking control panel.
A practical low-energy wash routine
The following routine combines the broadly supported choices without assuming that your LG has a particular button:
- Read the labels. Note temperature, cycle and spin limits before sorting.
- Sort by care needs. Separate delicates, heavily stained items and garments with different temperature or spin requirements.
- Build a full load. Wait until you have enough compatible items for an efficient load, while leaving the drum loose enough for proper movement.
- Check the model manual. Confirm whether ColdWash exists, which cycles allow it and whether a special load limit applies.
- Select the correct cycle. Start with fabric and soil level, not with the energy option.
- Choose cold operation. Press ColdWash if the manual lists it; otherwise select the coldest suitable temperature offered by that cycle.
- Set the spin speed. Choose a higher speed only when every item in the load allows it.
- Add any remaining permitted options. Confirm that they do not change the treatment required by the care labels.
- Start the washer. On the WM8000 ColdWash sequence, press Start/Pause after the selections are made.
- Dry efficiently. Air-dry when practical; otherwise transfer the load promptly and use the dryer setting appropriate to the fabric.
Troubleshooting common energy-setting problems
ColdWash is missing
Check the exact model manual and the selected cycle. The washer may not include ColdWash, or the option may be unavailable for that cycle. Use the cycle’s temperature modifier instead if it offers a suitable cold choice.
The cold option is unavailable for a cycle
LG limits temperature and other modifiers according to the selected cycle. Return to the cycle description and choose a fabric-safe alternative rather than selecting an unsuitable cycle solely to obtain a cold setting.
The water does not feel equally cold every time
Tap temperature varies with plumbing and with the distance from the water heater. Tap Cold uses the incoming tap supply, so the washer cannot guarantee one exact temperature.
The ColdWash cycle takes longer
For the WM8000, the manual allows up to 10 additional minutes. A longer display time is therefore not automatically a malfunction. Other LG models may behave differently; use the time shown by your machine and its manual.

Clothes still take a long time to dry
Check whether the selected spin speed is appropriate but unnecessarily low. If the care labels permit, increase the spin speed on the next load. Also consider air-drying; a washer cannot remove all moisture without regard to fabric limits.

Use the garment care label, soil type and cycle description together. Cold is generally energy-efficient, but oily stains and special fabric or hygiene requirements may call for a different treatment.
What to remember for your LG washer
Use the exact manual as the authority for buttons and cycle availability. Cold water is the main broadly applicable energy-saving choice, while a dedicated ColdWash option may automate adjustments on compatible models. Fill the machine with a suitable full load, extract as much water as the fabric permits, and avoid treating a model-specific instruction as a universal LG specification. Those choices reduce the energy used by water heating and drying without sacrificing fabric care.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use ColdWash on my LG front-load washer?
Check that your exact model lists ColdWash, select the appropriate cycle, press ColdWash, choose any options still available, and press Start/Pause. On the WM8000, the manual says ColdWash changes cycle settings automatically, may add up to 10 minutes, and is recommended for loads under 8 pounds for high wash efficiency.
Which LG washer setting uses the least energy?
For a suitable load, cold water is the broadly supported choice because ENERGY STAR says about 90% of washer operating energy goes to heating water. Use the coldest permitted setting, but follow the garment label and soil requirements.
Does every LG front-load washer have ColdWash?
No. LG controls and options vary by model and market. Some washers have a dedicated ColdWash control, while others provide only cold-temperature choices. Check the exact owner’s manual.
Is Tap Cold the same temperature on every wash?
No. LG USA describes Tap Cold as water supplied directly from the tap. Its actual temperature depends on household plumbing and the distance from the water heater, so the displayed choice does not guarantee one precise temperature.
Should I always use the highest spin speed to save energy?
No. A higher spin can remove more water and shorten dryer operation, but delicate, loosely woven, embellished or shape-sensitive items may require a slower speed. Follow care labels and the selected cycle.
Why does ColdWash take longer on my LG washer?
The WM8000 manual says ColdWash can add up to 10 minutes. That is a model-specific instruction, not a universal LG specification. Other models may show different timing.
Can I use cold water for oily stains?
Do not assume so. ENERGY STAR’s general cold-wash advice specifically qualifies oily stains. Use the garment label and appropriate stain-treatment directions to choose the temperature and cycle.
What load size should I use with ColdWash?
Use the limit in your exact manual. The WM8000 manual recommends less than 8 pounds for high wash efficiency; that figure should not be applied to another LG model unless its documentation says the same.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact LG manual, choose cold water or ColdWash when the load permits, run a properly sized full load, and use the highest safe spin speed before drying. Cold washing is not universal for oily stains or every fabric, and model-specific controls and limits always take priority.
