To use an HTML design as a favicon, first render it and export the result as a PNG file. Put that PNG at a public URL on your site, then point a rel="icon" link in your page’s <head> to that URL:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.png" type="image/png">The browser loads the image file, not your original HTML or the code that rendered it. The example assumes the file is served from your site root as /favicon.png; use the actual public path if yours is elsewhere.
What an HTML-to-PNG favicon is—and what the browser uses
HTML can describe a design, but a favicon link identifies an image resource. That means an HTML card, logo, or other composition must be rendered into an image and exported before a browser can use it as a PNG favicon. The resulting PNG must be reachable by the browser at the URL in the link element.
MDN’s web-page metadata guidance documents PNG favicon links in the document head. PNG is a practical format when the icon needs transparency, and MDN’s image-format guidance describes browser support for PNG. The HTML Standard also includes an example of a PNG declared with rel="icon". These sources establish that PNG is a valid option; they do not establish identical behavior in every browser, rendering library, or favicon-management tool.

Prepare the design and export it as PNG
Make a compact, legible image
Use a square design with a clear silhouette and few details. A favicon may appear very small in a browser tab or bookmark, so inspect the rendered result at small sizes rather than relying only on how it looks at full resolution. MDN describes the favicon as historically a 16-pixel square; that is historical context, not a universal modern export-size requirement.
Export an actual PNG image. Do not save the original HTML file with a .png extension: the extension does not convert markup into image data. If your renderer lets you choose a canvas or output size, choose a square size appropriate for your design and target use. The sources here do not prescribe a single size for every modern browser context.
Check cross-origin images if you render with canvas
If your HTML-to-PNG workflow draws remote images into a browser canvas, confirm those images permit the cross-origin access required for export. MDN explains that drawing an image loaded without the appropriate cross-origin handling can taint the canvas and restrict access to its image data. A common symptom is that the design appears on screen but the export step cannot read or save the canvas image.

Put the PNG where the browser can fetch it
Place the exported file in a location served by your site. For example, a file published at the site root as favicon.png should be available at /favicon.png. Many frameworks have a designated public or static directory for files exposed at the site root, but the directory name and deployment behavior depend on the framework and hosting setup.

Add the favicon link to the document head
Put the link inside the page’s <head>. For a root-level PNG, the minimal markup is:

</head>rel="icon"tells the browser that the linked resource is an icon for the current document.href="/favicon.png"must match the file’s actual public URL. A site-relative path beginning with/is rooted at the site origin; a relative path is resolved relative to the document URL.type="image/png"identifies the format. Keep it consistent with the file that the URL serves.
If the PNG is hosted at another valid resource URL, use that URL in href. Make sure the resource is available to the browsers and pages where you expect the icon to appear.
Choose one icon or declare alternatives
One PNG for a simple setup
A single PNG link is easy to maintain when one icon is sufficient for your site’s browser-tab use. The browser can use that declared candidate where it supports the format and context. Do not assume that one favicon link also supplies the separate, larger icon files used for every operating-system or home-screen context.
Multiple candidates for different formats or contexts
When you provide more than one candidate, the link’s type, sizes, and, where relevant, media attributes can help the browser choose an appropriate resource. MDN documents candidate selection using these attributes and explains that a browser can move to another candidate if a format is unsupported. Declare only files you actually publish and attributes that describe those files.

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">This is an illustrative pattern, not a requirement to provide those exact files or sizes. Ensure each URL points to a real icon of the declared format. A root-level /favicon.ico can be useful as a conventional fallback because the HTML Standard describes requests for that path and MDN notes that browsers and other software may request it automatically. An explicit PNG link remains useful when your chosen icon is another format or location. A fallback does not guarantee identical discovery behavior in every client.
Browser-tab icon versus touch icon
MDN’s metadata guidance shows separate, larger Apple touch icons for home-screen contexts. Treat those as a distinct asset use case: adding a browser favicon link does not by itself declare every icon needed for a saved home-screen shortcut or other platform-specific surface.
Verify the deployed result
- Open the image URL. Visit the exact public URL used by
href. Confirm that it returns the intended image rather than an HTML error page. - Inspect the delivered file. Check that it is a PNG, square, and recognizable at small display sizes. The declared
typeshould match the actual format. - Inspect the rendered document head. View the deployed page’s document or source and confirm the link is present in the page’s actual
<head>, not just in a template that is unused in production. - Check the contexts that matter. Test the site in the browsers and browser-related contexts you support. The documentation cited here does not establish a universal cache-refresh procedure or guarantee the same selection behavior in all clients.
Troubleshoot common failures
The icon does not appear
- Check the URL first. A typo, incorrect root-relative path, or framework deployment rule can leave the browser requesting a location where the PNG is not served.
- Check the response content. The URL may resolve but return an HTML fallback or error page instead of the image. Open it directly and verify the returned asset.
- Check the deployed head. Confirm that the active page contains the expected
rel="icon"element and that itshrefis the URL you tested. - Check format declarations. If the file is PNG, use
type="image/png"; do not label a different file format as PNG.
The canvas is visible but export fails
Check whether the composition draws images from other origins. MDN documents that cross-origin image handling can taint a canvas and limit access to its image data. Use image resources that permit the necessary access, or use a rendering route that does not depend on reading a tainted canvas.

A browser appears to use another icon
Inspect all declared icon candidates and any conventional root /favicon.ico file. With multiple candidates, attributes such as type, sizes, and media inform selection; a browser may choose a different suitable candidate or fall back. Test the deployed result in the browsers that matter rather than assuming every client makes the same choice.
The icon looks poor at small sizes
Simplify the artwork, improve contrast, and review the actual small rendering. An image that looks good when enlarged can lose its shape or detail in browser UI. Keep the HTML-to-image render and the exported image’s intended use in mind; the cited guidance does not establish one mandatory modern favicon size.
