You can preview and debug ESC/POS receipts without a physical printer by rendering the command stream to an image or sending your POS application’s print job to a local virtual printer. The emulator shows the receipt layout, and the better tools also expose the original bytes, decoded commands, warnings and job metadata. That lets you fix spacing, formatting and unsupported-command problems before testing on hardware.
What an ESC/POS emulator actually does
ESC/POS is a command language used by receipt printers. A print job contains ordinary printable characters plus control sequences for initialization, fonts, emphasis, underlining, alignment, images, barcodes, QR codes, paper feeds and status requests. An emulator interprets that byte stream and produces a screen preview instead of feeding paper through a printer.

There are two useful operating modes:
- File or stream rendering: give the emulator saved binary data, hexadecimal text or standard input and receive a rendered image, commonly PNG.
- Virtual network printer: point the POS application at a local IP address and TCP port 9100. The emulator accepts the same RAW print connection a network receipt printer would use, then displays the captured job.
The second mode is valuable when your application creates printer bytes internally. You test the real output path rather than copying a hand-edited sample into a separate utility.
Choose the emulator workflow that matches your problem
| Need | Best input path | Useful inspection | Important setup detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check a saved receipt fixture | Binary file, hexadecimal data or standard input | Rendered image and, where available, decoded commands | Keep the exact bytes produced by the application |
| See what a POS application sends | Virtual TCP printer on port 9100 | Preview, raw payload, command list, warnings and job details | Configure the application for the emulator computer’s local address |
| Compare 58 mm and 80 mm layouts | Printer profile or width selector | Rendered image at each paper geometry | Use the width and printable-dot setting of the target model |
| Trace a formatting defect | Captured job plus command inspector | Original bytes alongside decoded commands | Check for malformed or unsupported sequences before changing layout code |
Practical tools and what each one offers
ESCPost
ESCPost is described as both a Rust command-line tool and library, with a Python rendering library. It can turn ESC/POS data into an accurate PNG, accept binary, hexadecimal, standard-input and saved test-case inputs, and receive jobs through a virtual network printer. Its virtual printer uses port 9100 and is local-only by default, which is a safer starting point for development. It also documents optional output to connected USB or network printers.

Its printer-profile approach is important when a generic preview is not enough. Profiles are intended to model paper sizes, device features and behavior, so the same command stream can be checked against a more specific target.
POS Printer Emulator
This Windows application presents a live receipt preview and separate Commands, Raw data and Job details views. It documents a local RAW TCP/IP listener on port 9100. The raw view helps establish what the application actually transmitted; the decoded command view helps map that payload to operations such as text mode changes, feeds or image data; warnings identify commands the emulator cannot process confidently.
Its printer profiles expose settings such as paper width, printable dots, code page, image limits and supported capabilities. Select the profile that most closely matches the intended printer before judging line wrapping or image placement.

A repeatable preview-and-debug loop
1. Capture a representative job
Use a receipt that exercises the difficult parts of your application: long product names, discounts, tax lines, totals, an image or logo, a QR code, a barcode, non-ASCII text and the final paper cut or feed. Save the exact bytes if your software can log them. A tiny “Hello” receipt can render correctly while a production-sized job exposes wrapping and code-page problems.
2. Select the target geometry
Choose the target paper width, commonly 58 mm or 80 mm, and the corresponding printable-dot width when the emulator provides it. Width is not merely a visual preference: it determines how many characters or raster dots fit on each line. A preview made at 80 mm cannot prove that a 58 mm receipt will wrap correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Feed the bytes into the emulator
- For a file: open the saved binary or hexadecimal fixture in a renderer that supports that input type.
- For a stream: pipe the same bytes to the emulator’s standard-input mode, if available.
- For a live application: configure the POS printer destination to the emulator computer and TCP port
9100, then submit a normal test order.
Keep the input unchanged during the first render. If you edit bytes before loading them, you may hide the defect you are trying to locate.
4. Inspect the rendered image
Check the right edge of every line, the baseline alignment of mixed styles, image scaling, QR-code quiet zones, barcode placement, subtotal and total alignment, and the amount of blank space before a cut. Look for a failure pattern rather than only a single bad line: every line wrapping early points to geometry or character width; one missing style change points to a command sequence.
5. Inspect raw data and decoded commands
Use the raw-data panel to confirm that the expected bytes arrived. Then follow the decoded sequence around the visual defect. A command inspector can reveal an initialization sequence in the wrong place, a print-mode change that was never reset, an incomplete parameter, or a command marked unsupported by the emulator. Warnings are evidence to investigate, not proof that the physical printer will fail identically.

6. Change one cause and replay the same job
Change the application code or fixture, send the identical test case again and compare the new image with the previous one. Keeping the input receipt constant makes regressions visible and prevents unrelated data changes from confusing the diagnosis.

7. Keep a fixture set
Store representative binary jobs as repeatable test cases. Include a narrow receipt, a wide receipt, long text, international characters, raster images and each barcode or QR format your application uses. Re-render these fixtures after changing printer code, fonts, image conversion or tax formatting.
Commands worth understanding when a preview is wrong
Command names are short, so a single misplaced byte can change the interpretation of everything that follows. Common examples in command references include:
| Sequence | Typical purpose | What a mismatch may look like |
|---|---|---|
ESC @ |
Initialize the printer | Unexpected styles or alignment carried over from a previous job |
ESC ! |
Select print mode | Wrong font size, character width or combined style |
ESC E |
Enable or disable emphasis | Text remains bold, or a bold section is missing |
ESC - |
Select underline mode | Underline starts or ends at the wrong character |
ESC d |
Print and feed a number of lines | Excessive blank space or content cut too close to the edge |
DLE EOT |
Request real-time status | Status bytes appear in a captured job or are ignored by the emulator |
The exact syntax and support differ among printer families. Treat the table as a debugging vocabulary, then check the target model’s command reference. A sequence accepted by one family may be partial, ignored or implemented differently by another.

Everything is shifted or wraps too soon
- Confirm that the emulator width matches the target’s 58 mm or 80 mm paper and printable-dot setting.
- Check whether your application assumes a character count that does not match the selected code page or font.
- Compare a text-only fixture with the same receipt containing images; raster content can use a different width limit.
Accented or non-Latin characters are wrong
Inspect the selected code page in the printer profile and the bytes sent by the application. A preview can show replacement glyphs when the emulator or profile lacks the requested mapping. Confirm the target printer’s supported code pages rather than silently substituting a different encoding.

An image, barcode or QR code is missing
Look for an unsupported-command warning and verify that the payload uses a command form listed by the emulator. Check image dimensions and limits in the selected profile. A rendered text receipt does not establish that the target’s graphics path is compatible.
The preview looks right but the hardware differs
First verify that the emulator profile matches paper width, printable dots, code page, image limits and supported capabilities. Then inspect hardware-specific commands, firmware behavior and cutter or feed timing. A virtual printer can validate layout and much of the byte stream, but it cannot reproduce every mechanical or firmware detail.
The live connection never appears
- Confirm that the emulator is listening on TCP port
9100. - Use the emulator computer’s local address in the POS printer settings.
- Check that the application is using RAW TCP/IP rather than a driver-specific protocol.
- Submit a small test job and watch the job-details view for a connection attempt.
- Keep the listener local during development unless you intentionally need another machine to connect.
Why an emulator cannot replace every hardware check
ESC/POS is a family of implementations, not a guarantee that every model supports every command in the same way. Epson’s documentation explains that command references and availability are model-specific, and command tables from printer vendors show support differences between families. Profiles improve the prediction by representing paper geometry and capabilities, but they remain an interpretation of the device.
Plan at least one physical check when the release depends on a particular printer’s firmware, cutter, cash-drawer pulse, buzzer, status response, paper sensor, darkness, print speed or exact code-page behavior. Use the emulator for the many iterations before that check: it removes the need to print after every column move while preserving a final hardware gate for risks a screen cannot model.

A profile and fixture checklist
- Target printer family and firmware version are recorded.
- Paper width and printable-dot width are selected correctly.
- Code page and character encoding are tested with real customer text.
- Logo and raster-image dimensions stay within the profile’s limits.
- Barcode and QR commands are included in fixtures.
- Initialization, style reset, feed and cut sequences are visible in decoded output.
- Warnings and unsupported commands are reviewed rather than dismissed.
- The same fixture can be replayed after every relevant code change.
What success looks like
A reliable emulator workflow gives you three matching views of one job: the receipt image, the decoded command sequence and the original bytes. The image answers “what will the layout look like?”; decoded commands answer “which operation produced this?”; raw data answers “what did the application really send?” When all three are captured under the correct printer profile, most layout and command mistakes can be fixed without consuming paper. The remaining hardware test is then focused on model-specific behavior rather than routine visual iteration.
