Enter the alias, open the forwarded confirmation message, then click its link or enter its code.
That proves access to the mailbox behind the alias. It does not prove your legal identity, ownership of a payment account, or eligibility for a regulated service. If the organization is performing an identity check rather than merely confirming delivery, use the address it requests.

Identify what the site is actually verifying
The phrase “verify your email address” can describe two different checks. Choosing the wrong type of address is the most common reason an alias workflow fails.
Inbox or address confirmation
Most ordinary registrations send a one-time link or code to the address you entered. The site is checking that someone who entered the address can receive the message and complete the action. A live forwarding alias is suitable for this use when the destination mailbox is yours and forwarding is working.

Identity or account-ownership verification
A bank, healthcare provider, lawyer, government service, employer, travel service, or another organization may need an address associated with a known person or existing account. Receiving a message through an alias does not establish that association. Mozilla’s Firefox Relay FAQ specifically advises against masks when identity must be verified or when messages are especially important, including communications from banks, doctors, lawyers, and boarding-pass services.
Look for clues in the instructions. Requests for a legal name, customer number, government document, existing account email, or a reply from a known organizational address indicate a broader identity or ownership process. Follow the organization’s stated requirement instead of trying to make an alias qualify.
How an alias works in this situation
An alias is an additional address that routes incoming mail to a mailbox you control. The website sees the alias, not necessarily your primary address. The forwarding provider receives the message, then delivers it to the destination inbox you selected.
- The alias must be active, not deleted, paused, or over a provider limit.
- The destination mailbox must be accessible now; do not use an inbox you cannot open during signup.
- The site must accept the alias’s domain and address syntax. Some sites allow only addresses from particular providers or reject relay subdomains.
- The forwarding path must be short and reliable. Chaining several alias services can interfere with authentication and delivery.
Forwarding is not the same as creating a separate mailbox. You are depending on the alias service to continue routing mail, so the alias remains part of the account’s future login and recovery path.
Prepare an alias before submitting it
- Select a forwarding alias. Use an existing alias or create one with a service that forwards incoming messages to the inbox you can currently open. Mozilla Relay masks and SimpleLogin aliases both document forwarding to a real or selected destination inbox.
- Confirm the destination address. Check the provider’s account settings and make sure the destination mailbox is verified if the provider requires verification. A typo here can send the confirmation to an inaccessible inbox.
- Send a test message. Mozilla’s activation flow includes sending a test message and checking that it arrives. Perform that check before using the alias for an important registration.
- Inspect spam and filtering rules. Confirm that your destination mailbox is not automatically quarantining or deleting forwarded mail. If your provider offers allow-listing, add the alias service’s permitted sender or domain according to its documented instructions.
- Keep the alias identifiable. Record which alias belongs to which service. This matters when several aliases look similar and when you later need to reset a password.
Use the alias for the website’s confirmation
- Open the website’s registration or account-contact form.
- Enter the alias exactly as the forwarding provider displays it. Do not replace its domain with your primary provider’s domain.
- Submit the form and wait for the confirmation message. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes; each request may invalidate the previous code or create a delay.
- Open the destination inbox and check the main inbox and spam or junk folders.
- In the forwarded message, click the confirmation link or copy the code into the website’s verification field. Check that the browser is on the expected site before entering credentials.
- Finish any remaining registration steps. A successful email click does not necessarily complete phone, payment, age, or identity checks.
- Leave the alias active and retain access to the destination mailbox. The site may send a password reset, security alert, or renewed confirmation to the same address later.
If the message contains a link that has expired, request one fresh message from the site and use the newest link. Do not forward the message through another alias service just to make the original link arrive; extra forwarding hops can create separate delivery and authentication problems.

Compare the main alias routes
There is no universal acceptance rule. A website can reject an alias domain even when forwarding works perfectly, so treat the following as capability descriptions rather than guarantees that every site will accept the address.

Provider availability and limits can change. Firefox Relay’s free service is available in most countries, while Premium availability is country-specific; check the provider’s current availability information before depending on it.
Troubleshoot a missing confirmation message
Check the destination folders first
Search the destination mailbox for the website name, the alias address, and terms such as “verify” or “confirmation.” Review spam, junk, quarantine, promotions, and any custom folders. A message can be delivered successfully but sorted away from the inbox.
Verify that forwarding is enabled
Open the alias provider’s dashboard and confirm that the alias has not been disabled, deleted, paused, or detached from its destination. Recheck the destination address shown in the provider account. If the provider offers a test-message function, run it again and wait for the result.
Allow for relay delay
Forwarding is not always instantaneous. Mozilla lists slower-than-usual relay delivery, spam placement, mailbox blocking, and disabled forwarding among reasons a message may not appear. Wait briefly, then request one new confirmation message rather than generating many requests at once.

Check whether the destination mailbox blocks forwarded mail
A receiving provider may quarantine or reject a forwarded message because of sender authentication, filtering policy, or a blocked address. Review the destination provider’s rejection notice if one is available. If you can change the alias destination, route it to a mailbox that accepts the provider’s forwarded messages and test that route before resubmitting the website form.

Check the message size
Firefox Relay documents a 10 MB forwarding limit for email attachments. If the website sends a message larger than that limit, the relay will not forward it. Ask the organization for a text-only confirmation link or use an accepted mailbox that can receive the message directly.
Fix an address that the website rejects
The form says the address is invalid
Re-enter the alias without spaces and copy the complete address from the alias dashboard. If the syntax is correct but the form still rejects it, the site may be blocking the alias domain or a subdomain used by the relay service. There is no dependable setting that makes a site accept an address it has deliberately disallowed.
The site accepts only certain providers
Some registration forms allow addresses from a short list of large providers. In that case, use an address from a provider the site explicitly accepts, provided you are comfortable with the privacy trade-off and can retain access to it. Do not repeatedly create aliases on different domains to evade an organization’s stated eligibility rule.
The site accepts the alias but later sends nothing
Keep the alias active and check the provider’s forwarding status. A site may send an initial confirmation successfully and later use a different sender, attachment, or authentication policy that the relay handles differently. Test delivery from the site’s account-settings page if it offers a resend option.

Avoid forwarding chains
A direct route from the website to one alias provider and then to your final mailbox is easier to diagnose than multiple forwarding hops. SimpleLogin warns that alias services may be incompatible and that forwarding can fail to preserve SPF, DKIM, or DMARC authentication. The resulting message may land in quarantine or spam, or be rejected before it reaches you.
- Use one alias service for the address presented to the website.
- Set that alias to one final mailbox you control.
- Do not point one alias at another alias unless both providers document the arrangement as supported.
- If delivery fails after adding a second hop, remove the extra hop and repeat the test with the direct destination.
Keep the alias available for recovery
Email verification is often only the first use of an address. Password resets, suspicious-login alerts, subscription notices, and requests to reconfirm an address may arrive months later. Before deleting or disabling an alias, change the address in the website’s account settings and complete any new verification it requires.
Store the alias name in your password manager or another secure record alongside the account it serves. Also record which destination mailbox receives it. This prevents a future recovery attempt from turning into a search through several forwarding accounts.
When an alias provider offers controls to pause, disable, or delete an alias, understand the difference. Pausing may stop current delivery while preserving the address; deletion can make future recovery impossible or allow the address to be reused, depending on the provider’s policy. The reviewed provider documentation establishes forwarding and disablement controls, but it does not establish one universal recovery policy for every alias service.

An alias hides your primary address from the website
The site receives the alias you submit rather than your primary address. The forwarding provider still handles the incoming message, and the destination mailbox remains part of the delivery chain. An alias therefore reduces direct address exposure; it is not anonymous browsing and does not conceal other information the site collects, such as an account name, payment details, device data, or IP address.
Receipt is not identity proof
Anyone who can access the destination mailbox may be able to complete the email step. That is why a forwarded message demonstrates control of the mailbox path, not the identity of the person signing up. Use the organization’s required address when the account has legal, medical, financial, employment, or travel consequences.
Protect the forwarded message
Confirmation links and codes are credentials for a limited action. Do not paste them into an unrelated page, send them to another person, or leave them visible in a shared mailbox. If the site supports passkeys or multifactor authentication after registration, enable those controls separately; an alias does not replace them.
A practical decision checklist
- Use the alias when the site only needs a clickable link or one-time code, the alias forwards to a mailbox you control, and the site accepts the address.
- Use a direct address accepted by the organization when the service must associate the email with your identity, an existing customer record, or a regulated process.
- Test first when the account will be difficult to recover, the destination mailbox has aggressive filtering, or the alias provider is new to you.
- Choose a simpler route when messages are being chained through several services or authentication failures are appearing in quarantine logs.
- Keep the alias until you have changed the account’s contact address and confirmed that recovery works through the new address.
What to expect from the most common failure cases
A working alias does not guarantee a successful registration. Three independent decisions are involved: the alias provider must accept and forward the message, the destination mailbox must receive it, and the website must permit the alias domain and complete its own verification rules. Fix the layer that failed instead of assuming the entire concept of aliases is unsupported.

If the website accepts the address but no message arrives, investigate spam, forwarding status, mailbox blocking, relay delay, message size, and authentication problems. If the email link works but the organization asks for identity documents or an address tied to an existing record, stop using the alias for that step and follow the organization’s required process.
