To get the most from one, provide a path for air to move through the room, monitor humidity and dampness, and stop water-cooling if moisture builds up. For dependable cooling in humid conditions, air conditioning is generally the more suitable option.
Why humidity limits an air cooler
An evaporative cooler pulls air across wet media; water evaporates and cools the passing air. Humid air makes further evaporation less effective, so the cooler may provide less cooling while still adding moisture indoors. Unlike an air conditioner, it does not remove humidity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says evaporative coolers are used in dry climates (EPA evaporative-cooler guidance).

There is no single humidity cutoff that applies to every cooler and room. Follow the model’s manual and judge performance using the room’s actual conditions rather than assuming a particular percentage guarantees useful cooling.

Set it up so humid air can escape
- Check relative humidity. Use a hygrometer in the room before switching on water-cooling. The EPA’s 2014 indoor-air guide recommends 30–50% relative humidity as general indoor-air guidance—not as an air-cooler performance threshold.
- Allow through-flow. Open a window or door to create a route for air to pass through and humid air to leave, following the cooler’s manual. The EPA describes open windows as part of proper evaporative-cooler operation; Honeywell also recommends cross-ventilation in its portable air cooler support guidance. Avoid sealing the room while the cooler adds moisture.
- Check the room as it runs. Look for condensation, wet surfaces, or musty or increasingly damp conditions. If they appear, reduce the water-cooling output or turn it off, then improve ventilation and address the moisture.
- Use water-free operation only if supported. Some models offer fan-only operation, and the EPA notes that some evaporative coolers can operate without water in milder temperatures. Check your specific manual; this feature is not assured on every portable model.
The EPA’s separate humidifier guidance (June 2022) advises against humidifying above 50% relative humidity. That is useful context for avoiding excess indoor moisture, not a universal air-cooler shutoff rule.

Maintain the cooler and manage moisture
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the reservoir and pads, draining water, and safe operation. EPA building-moisture guidance recommends inspecting evaporative pads for clean, even wetting and confirming that drainage works. It also advises preventing operation during rain when it could add humidity without useful cooling. These are general moisture-management principles, not a replacement for the instructions for your portable unit (EPA, Moisture Control Guidance).
A cooler that is adding moisture but not providing useful relief is a reason to stop water-cooling, not to keep increasing output. Use fan-only mode if your model permits it, or switch to a different approach.

Choose an alternative when the room is humid

The EPA lists air conditioning as a way to decrease indoor humidity in its indoor-air guide. If outdoor air pollution is high and your evaporative cooler lacks a high-efficiency filter, the EPA advises against using it (EPA evaporative-cooler guidance).
