You can use Gemini for many Android tasks without granting every permission it requests. Start with one specific action, identify the access category that action actually needs, allow it in the Google app only when necessary, and review or revoke it afterward. Denying one permission can disable that action while leaving other supported assistant features available.
Gemini’s Android assistant functions are hosted by the Google app, so permission decisions for Gemini are generally made on the Google app’s Android permission page. Menu names and available capabilities vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, region and app configuration.

Understand the three kinds of access before you change anything
Android privacy controls are not one single switch. Gemini-related access usually falls into three groups, and each should be evaluated separately.

These are familiar categories such as microphone, location, contacts, phone and camera. Android lets you choose whether the Google app is allowed to use each category. A denial normally affects features that depend on that category, not every assistant function.

Special access and default-assistant status
Reading or replying to notifications requires notification access, which is separate from ordinary runtime permissions. Some device settings and quick actions also require Google to be selected as the default digital assistant. These controls can be more powerful than a one-time runtime permission because they allow an assistant to operate across the system.
Connected apps and account controls
Gemini can connect to services such as the Phone app through its Connected Apps settings. Account-level activity controls, including Gemini Keep Activity, are separate from Android permission switches. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the others.
Match each Android task to the minimum access it needs
Use the table as a planning tool. “Not required” means the documented task can normally be attempted without that access; a different action may still need it.

Google says system permissions and device data used with Gemini can include calls and messages, contacts, installed apps and screen content. Review each category in the context of the task you intend to perform instead of treating a broad feature list as a reason to allow everything.
Start with a concrete task, not a blanket approval
Write down the exact outcome you want: set a timer, turn on Do Not Disturb, call a person, or reply to a notification. Then ask Gemini once and note the access request it presents. This approach prevents a permission from being granted merely because it might be useful later.

Gemini’s Device assistance supports a range of device actions, but Google documents dependencies for particular actions. Notification access is required for reading and replying to notifications, and Google must be the default digital assistant for certain settings and quick actions. Google’s own help wording is explicit: “Gemini can still work with the Device assistance app without these settings and permissions, but the actions listed below won’t work.”
Review the Google app’s Android permissions
- Open the app’s information page. Press and hold the Google app icon, then select App info. On some phones you can reach the same page through Settings → Apps → Google.
- Open the permission list. Tap Permissions. Android presents each category with its current status.
- Inspect sensitive categories individually. Check microphone, location, contacts, phone and camera. Keep a category enabled only when it supports a task you actually use.
- Choose the narrowest available option. Depending on the Android release, choices can include allowing while using the app, asking every time, or denying. The labels and choices differ by manufacturer and version.
- Test the intended action. Return to Gemini and retry the single task. If it works, do not enable an unrelated category “just in case.”
Changing a Google app permission affects the app that hosts Gemini’s Android assistant capabilities. A permission denial may stop the associated action while leaving unrelated assistant requests functional.

Notification access is a separate special-access control. If you want Gemini to read or reply to notifications, open Android Settings and search for Notification access or Special app access, then select the Google app and enable access. The exact route and wording vary by phone.
Because this access can expose notification content from other apps, leave it off when notification replies are not part of your use. If a notification task later fails, return to this special-access page rather than enabling unrelated contacts, location or microphone permissions.
Use calling features without opening your entire address book
Phone permission is the core requirement
Gemini’s documented Phone-app calling flow requires Phone permission for the Google app. Grant it from Google app → App info → Permissions → Phone when you intend to place calls through Gemini. Denying Phone permission prevents that calling route but does not inherently disable typed questions, timers or other supported actions.

Contacts and Call Logs are optional conveniences
Google says Contacts access can help Gemini call device contacts that are not synced to your Google Account. Call Logs access can help it identify the right person from recent call history. Neither is described as a universal prerequisite for every Gemini task. If you do not need those conveniences, leave both categories denied and use a clearly named contact or the Phone app directly.
Disconnect the Phone app separately
Permission switches and service connections are different controls. To stop Gemini from using the Phone app, open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and disconnect Phone. You can keep or revoke the Android Phone permission independently; choose both changes if you want to remove the connection and the underlying app access.
Choose deliberately between voice and typed input
Microphone permission enables Assistant voice requests. Google’s permission documentation says the microphone can be used in the background when “Hey Google” is enabled. If you do not want a wake phrase, use typed input or tap-to-speak where your device supports it.
To remove voice access, open Google app → App info → Permissions → Microphone and select Don’t allow or the most restrictive option shown. This prevents microphone-based requests; it does not erase your ability to type requests. If you later need voice input, Android will ask for microphone access again.
Limit location while understanding its trade-off
Location is useful for nearby businesses, directions and local weather, but it is not required for every assistant request. Google documents this path for the Google app: Settings → Location → App location permissions → Google. From there, select a limited access mode or turn off precise location if that meets your needs.

Turning off precise location can reduce the accuracy of nearby results and affect local weather responses. Google also says Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps, to fulfill a request. Therefore, one Google app location toggle should not be described as a guarantee that all location processing has stopped. Review connected services as well as the Android permission.

- Open Settings → Security and Privacy, or open Settings → Privacy → Privacy dashboard. Some phones require tapping Privacy a second time.
- Select a permission category such as microphone, location or camera.
- Review the apps shown and the times they used that category.
- Tap the Google app entry to change its permission if the activity does not match your intended use.
Google’s Android Help documentation describes a lookback window of seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are dashboard history windows, not claims about how long Google retains Gemini data. Menu availability and history length can differ on other releases, so check your Android version when your screen does not match these labels.
Keep Android permissions separate from Gemini privacy controls
Permission minimization reduces direct device access, but it does not describe every type of information involved in an AI conversation. Google’s Gemini privacy notice, embedded in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and dated June 29, 2026, describes collection of prompts, shared content, device and app context, and some system-permission data. The hub was last updated September 24, 2026.
Google also says that some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers for stated purposes. Avoid entering confidential documents, private messages, passwords, financial details or other material that you would not want handled under those terms. Device permission changes do not make a sensitive prompt anonymous.
Google says Device assistance is designed to work on Android even with Gemini Keep Activity turned off. Keep Activity is an account-level control, so review it separately from the Google app’s Android permission page. Connected Apps settings are another separate layer: disconnect a service you no longer want Gemini to use, even if its runtime permission remains enabled.
Least-privilege setups for common users
Typing-only assistant
- Keep microphone denied unless another Google app feature needs it.
- Leave notification access, Phone, Contacts, Call Logs and location off unless a specific task requires them.
- Use typed requests for timers, explanations and other actions that do not depend on protected data.
Voice assistant without calls or notifications
- Allow microphone for voice requests.
- Do not enable notification access or Phone unless you intend to use those features.
- Disable “Hey Google” if you want microphone access only after tapping to speak.
Local-information assistant
- Allow the least precise location mode that still produces useful nearby results.
- Expect less accurate local weather or nearby searches when precise location is disabled.
- Check other Google services, such as Maps, because Gemini may receive precise location through them for a request.
Calling assistant
- Enable Phone permission for the Google app only when calling through Gemini.
- Add Contacts or Call Logs only if their specific lookup conveniences matter to you.
- Disconnect Phone in Connected Apps when you stop using Gemini for calls.
Notification-reply assistant
- Enable notification access only for the period in which notification reading or replies are needed.
- Turn it off from Android’s notification-access or special-access screen when finished.
- Do not infer that notification access grants or replaces microphone, contacts or location permission; each category is independent.
Troubleshoot a task that stops working after you tighten permissions
Gemini cannot read or reply to a notification
Check the separate Notification access setting for the Google app. Ordinary notification permission or microphone access does not substitute for this special access.
A quick setting or device action fails
Check whether the action is one of those requiring Google as the default digital assistant. If you do not want to change the default assistant, use another supported route for that setting or accept that this particular action is unavailable.
A call cannot be placed
Verify Phone permission for the Google app and confirm that Phone remains connected in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. Add Contacts or Call Logs only if the failure concerns finding or identifying a person rather than placing the call itself.
Voice input no longer responds
Check Microphone permission and whether “Hey Google” is enabled. If you intentionally revoked microphone access, use typed input or tap-to-speak where available.
Nearby results are inaccurate
Review the Google app’s location permission and the precise-location control. Also consider whether another connected Google service is supplying location context. Disabling one toggle does not necessarily remove every location source.
A menu does not match these instructions
Android manufacturers rename and relocate controls. Search Settings for the category name—Permissions, Notification access, Privacy dashboard or App location permissions—and verify the Android version before assuming a feature is missing.
A practical review schedule
Review the Google app’s permissions after installing a major Android update, changing phones, enabling a new Gemini feature or noticing an unexpected privacy-dashboard entry. Remove special access and disconnect services you no longer use. A short, task-based review is more reliable than granting every category permanently and hoping to remember it later.
