Use a scheduled browser agent to revisit the same product listing, read the displayed price, and save a timestamped screenshot for each check. Compare only matching variants and contexts—especially seller or offer, currency, and delivery location—and treat each screenshot as evidence of what appeared in that browser session, not proof that an offer was generally available or purchasable.
What a useful price-monitoring run should record
A reliable record connects the extracted price to the page and conditions that produced it. Save one structured observation per run with:

- A timestamp, product name, exact variant, and canonical product URL or stable product identifier.
- The displayed price and currency, plus seller or offer details when visible.
- The delivery location or pincode and other relevant browser context, such as locale.
- The screenshot filename and the status of extraction: valid, ambiguous, blocked, unavailable, or failed.
Keep the original screenshot alongside the extracted value. A later reviewer can then check whether the agent selected the right price or accidentally recorded a placeholder, error page, or different offer.

Playwright supports screenshots saved to a file, full-page captures, image bytes returned in a buffer, and screenshots of a single element. Those methods capture pixels; they do not verify that a parsed price is correct. The examples below use the documented screenshot methods from Playwright’s screenshot documentation. Choose a stable product URL and inspect the page yourself to identify selectors that match its current markup.

1. Install Playwright
For a Node.js project, install Playwright and its browser:

2. Create a monitor script
Save this as monitor-price.mjs. Replace the example URL, product label, and selectors with values appropriate to the listing. The sample deliberately marks an unrecognized price as ambiguous rather than guessing. Retail pages change, so selectors must be checked and maintained.

The script outputs a JSON observation you can append to a file or send to a database. Create the output directory before running it, or add directory creation to the script. The selector and currency parsing are examples, not universal rules: many pages show multiple prices, discounts, or offer conditions. Verify the selected value and surrounding context before using it to trigger an alert.

3. Schedule checks and preserve history
Run the script through a scheduler suited to your host, such as cron on Linux or Task Scheduler on Windows. Store each observation with its screenshot instead of overwriting the previous run. Pick an interval suited to your decision and the retailer’s behavior; there is no universally correct frequency. A daily scheduled script is one possible pattern, not a rule that every product needs daily checks.
4. Compare observations and alert conservatively
Compare only records for the same product variant and relevant context. An alert can fire when a validated price crosses a target or changes beyond a threshold you choose. Include the observed amount, timestamp, product link, and screenshot reference in the notification. If the page is blocked, missing, or ambiguous, report that run as needing review rather than treating it as a price change.
Choose a screenshot that can be checked later
A full-page image preserves more of the page but may include unrelated content. A price-area crop is easier to scan, but it should retain enough context to identify the product and offer. Playwright documents these capture patterns:

Use a filename or record key tied to the observation timestamp. A screenshot is a record of visible pixels at capture time; it does not independently confirm stock, checkout eligibility, payment-method discounts, coupons, delivery charges, or future availability.

Keep product and location context consistent
Before comparing two runs, check that they refer to the same model, size, colour, capacity, or other variant—not merely the same product family. Keep locale, currency display, delivery location or pincode, and viewport consistent where feasible. Record them because a listing can present different prices or availability depending on context. Also note the seller and offer conditions when displayed; a changed seller or conditional discount can make two displayed amounts poor comparisons.
What to do when extraction or capture fails
- The price selector times out: The page may still be loading, the selector may be outdated, or a different page may have appeared. Save the failure status and screenshot if possible, then inspect the current page and revise the selector or wait condition.
- The page shows a skeleton, unavailable message, sign-in prompt, or interstitial: Do not parse it as a price. Mark the run blocked or unavailable and retain the image for review.
- The extracted text contains several amounts: The selector may cover the wrong area or include a list price and sale price. Narrow it only after checking the page, and preserve visible offer context.
- The product title or variant changed: Stop comparisons for that run. Confirm the canonical listing and selected variant before resuming history.
- A screenshot is missing: Check the output directory, permissions, and whether the capture path exists. Keep the observation marked incomplete rather than saving an unverified value as a successful run.
- An alert seems implausible: Review the saved page image, seller, location, currency, and conditions. A selector or page-layout change can create a false price change.
