What to tell the agent before it opens staging
Make the task observable: specify where to go, what to do, what should be visible, and what evidence to save. Decide whether the agent should only capture evidence or also fix defects and repeat the checks. A prompt that merely says “take screenshots of staging” leaves route, state, viewport, and success criteria ambiguous.

For example:
Open the staging site at [staging URL]. Visit [route], complete [user flow], and check that [expected visible state] appears. Capture a screenshot at [viewport dimensions] after each named checkpoint. Save files as [route]-[viewport]-[state].png. Report the route, actions performed, observed result, and any console errors. Do not claim a check passed unless you observed the expected state.

Replace each bracketed item with concrete values. For a responsive review, name the viewport dimensions or breakpoints explicitly; for a flow, name each point worth capturing, such as before submission, validation error, and confirmation. Avoid putting passwords, tokens, or other secrets in prompts, filenames, screenshots, or logs. Use the credential-handling mechanism documented for your specific platform.

Choose the browser setup that fits the task
These options do not share identical commands or session behavior. Choose based on where the site runs, how the agent connects, whether it needs authenticated state, and whether execution should be local or hosted.

Capture a staging flow with Playwright Agent CLI
The repeatable loop is open, inspect, interact, inspect again, and capture. The accessibility snapshot gives the agent structured page information and refs to use for controls; a screenshot is for judging visual appearance. After navigation or a state change, take a fresh snapshot because refs correspond to the observed page state.
- Open the staging URL:
playwright-cli open <staging-url> - Inspect the current page:
playwright-cli snapshot. Use the accessibility information and refs to identify controls rather than guessing their position from an image. - Perform the requested actions: use the CLI’s available interactions with refs from the current snapshot. Follow the specific journey in your prompt.
- Re-inspect after changes: run
playwright-cli snapshotafter navigation or an action that changes the page, then verify the expected visible state. - Capture the checkpoint: for example,
playwright-cli screenshot --filename=checkout-mobile-error.png. - Close the browser when finished:

Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
Pick the extent that answers the review question. A viewport capture records what is on screen now; an element capture isolates a component; a full-page capture includes scrollable content below the fold.

The CLI reference documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; PNG is the default when no format is selected. Without a filename, it creates a timestamped page-{timestamp} output. Consult the command reference for the format-selection syntax supported by your installed CLI: Playwright Agent CLI screenshots and PDF.
High-resolution device-pixel output can make details easier to inspect, but the CLI warns that its coordinates no longer match CSS-pixel mouse coordinates. Do not reuse screenshot pixel coordinates as if they were ordinary browser interaction coordinates.
Full-page captures are useful when below-the-fold content matters, but a very long image can be awkward to review. Capture a viewport at a named interaction checkpoint when the question is about a particular visible state; use a full-page image when the whole page is the evidence you need.

Replace the example locator and insert the real interaction and assertions for your page; main is only an illustrative selector. A locator screenshot captures that element, while fullPage: true requests the full scrollable page. Capture visual evidence and functional evidence together
Use structured page state to locate controls and determine whether the intended content or state appeared. Use screenshots to review layout, charts, canvas output, spacing, responsive behavior, and the appearance of errors or dialogs. When both matter, have the agent record both the observed state and its screenshot for each checkpoint.
Ask for a brief report listing the route, actions performed, expected state, observed state, screenshot filename, and any console errors. Keep “captured an image” separate from “the check passed”: a pass requires observing the expected outcome, and visual acceptance may also require a human reviewer or a defined comparison process. If the agent changes code, review the changes and verification results, then rerun the same checks and captures.

Do not assume the agent shares your normal browser login. VS Code documents its opened browser page as an isolated ephemeral session that does not automatically share cookies or storage with other tabs. Its browser tools distinguish opening a new isolated session from sharing an existing page, which carries that tab’s cookies, storage, and sign-in state. Choose deliberately based on the intended test and the platform’s documented credential handling. VS Code’s browser tools guide.

For a protected flow, confirm that the session has the intended access before interpreting a redirect or sign-in screen as an application defect. Follow your organization’s staging authorization rules, and do not expose session credentials in captures or agent output.
Keep screenshots useful in review and CI
Use stable, descriptive names that encode route, viewport, and state, such as checkout-mobile-error.png or pricing-desktop-loaded.png. This makes it easier to match evidence to a test checkpoint and to compare repeated runs. Specify the desired image format and resolution when the review system requires them; the CLI supports custom filenames and PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and the API can return a buffer for further processing.
For deterministic visual comparisons, keep the route, viewport, state, and capture point consistent between runs. Dynamic content, changed data, or a different browser session can make two images differ even if the layout did not regress; define what should be stable in your test rather than treating every pixel difference as a defect.

Common problems and practical fixes
- The agent sees a login page instead of the target state: the browser may be isolated from your existing session. Select the platform’s documented shared or configured session approach, or arrange authorized staging access before running the flow.
- A ref or control is no longer found after navigation: refs are tied to the observed state. Take a new accessibility snapshot after page changes and use refs from that snapshot.
- The screenshot misses content below the fold: a normal screenshot captures the current viewport. Request a full-page capture with the CLI’s
--full-pageoption or the relevant API’s full-page setting. - The image looks too small to inspect: explicitly request device-pixel output if supported by the chosen integration. For CLI high-resolution screenshots, account for the documented difference between device-pixel output and CSS-pixel interaction coordinates.
- The capture exists, but the flow’s success is unclear: add an explicit expected state and ask the agent to report what it observed. A file alone does not establish that a form submitted or a journey completed.
- Commands or parameters do not work across tools: confirm which integration is active. Agent CLI commands, MCP tools, and Playwright library calls use different interfaces; copy syntax from the documentation for the selected setup.
- The hosted example is not suitable for production: Cloudflare marks its cited Browser Run agent example Beta. Check its current status and deployment fit before making it a dependency.
