Use generative AI as a bounded assistant—not as evidence. It can help you brainstorm questions, organize notes, improve wording, or draft code, but every material scientific claim, citation, interpretation, and result still requires human verification against the original evidence.
The practical rule is simple: let AI accelerate tasks around research, never replace the researcher’s judgment about what is true. You remain responsible for accuracy, integrity, privacy, and compliance with the rules of your institution, funder, and publication venue.

What “not relying on AI for facts” actually means
An AI system generates plausible text from patterns in its training and instructions. A confident sentence is not a measurement, a peer-reviewed result, or proof that a cited paper exists. Systems can invent references, misstate a real paper’s findings, omit limitations, confuse correlation with causation, or produce different answers to the same prompt.

The European Commission’s Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research state: “Researchers are accountable for the integrity of the content they produce generated by or with the support of AI tools.” That accountability remains with the authors even when the wording, code, or structure came from a model.
Choose bounded tasks with a clear human checkpoint
Start by defining what the system is allowed to do and what it is not allowed to decide. The lower-risk tasks below produce drafts or leads that a person can inspect. Higher-risk tasks directly affect scientific claims and require stronger validation—or should be done without handing the decision to a model.
| Task | Useful AI role | Required human control |
|---|---|---|
| Brainstorming | Suggest research questions, keywords, variables, or alternative explanations. | Check that suggestions are relevant, ethically appropriate, and grounded in the field’s established terminology. |
| Finding literature | Propose search phrases, databases, or categories of evidence. | Search the relevant databases yourself and read the actual papers or reports. |
| Language editing | Improve grammar, clarity, or structure in text you already understand. | Compare the edited version with the original so the strength, scope, and uncertainty of claims are unchanged. |
| Organization | Turn notes into an outline, checklist, or list of questions for reviewers. | Confirm that no important qualification or contradictory result was dropped. |
| Code drafting | Produce a first draft of a script, explain an error, or suggest tests. | Review the logic, run the code on known cases, inspect outputs, and document validation. |
| Scientific interpretation | Offer possible interpretations to investigate. | Base the published interpretation on the study design, data, methods, uncertainty, and domain expertise—not on the model’s prose. |
Do not cite an AI system as the authority for a scientific fact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states: “AI tools cannot be authors or coauthors and should not be cited as authors or primary sources.” A model can help you locate a source, but the source—not the model—is what supports the claim.
A claim-by-claim verification workflow
Apply the same process to text produced in a chat, an editor, a coding assistant, or an automated literature tool. Verification is most reliable when you make each step explicit rather than asking the model whether its own answer is correct.
1. Ask for leads and structure, not authority
Prompts should define a bounded deliverable: “List search terms for studies of this population and outcome,” “Turn these notes into an outline,” or “Identify sentences that need a primary citation.” Avoid prompts that ask the system to settle a disputed scientific question or supply an authoritative bibliography without checking.
Tell the system to mark uncertainty and distinguish suggestions from established findings. That instruction can improve the draft’s usefulness, but it is not a substitute for checking every consequential statement.
2. Turn every important sentence into a checkable proposition
Underline each sentence that could change a reader’s decision or understanding. Rewrite it as a proposition with a defined:

- population, sample, organism, material, or technical system;
- exposure, intervention, predictor, or condition;
- outcome or measurement;
- time period, geographic setting, and relevant version or instrument; and
- type of relationship being claimed, such as association, prediction, mechanism, or causation.
For example, “The treatment improves recovery” is too broad to verify. A checkable version identifies which treatment, for whom, compared with what, measured how, and over which follow-up period. If the original sentence cannot be made precise, it is not ready for citation.

3. Follow every reference to the original document
Open the paper, standard, dataset documentation, trial registry, or agency report yourself. Confirm the author or issuing body, title, publication date, venue, and that the document actually exists. Then locate the relevant table, figure, methods section, or passage.
A citation can be genuine while the AI-generated summary is wrong. The European Commission specifically warns about this failure mode. Do not stop at a title, abstract, or the model’s description of a result. Read enough of the source to understand the population, methods, limitations, and exact wording.
4. Test whether the evidence entails the sentence
Compare the source and your proposed wording at the same level of specificity. Check whether:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- an observational association has been incorrectly written as a causal effect;
- a preliminary, underpowered, or exploratory result has been presented as consensus;
- a result from a different population, species, device, or time period has been generalized;
- a confidence interval, error estimate, exclusion, or limitation disappeared in the paraphrase; or
- the source’s hypothesis or discussion has been mistaken for a measured finding.
Rewrite the sentence to match what the evidence supports. If the source does not support it, remove the citation and the claim rather than trying to make the reference fit.
5. Check important claims against appropriate independent evidence
For consequential conclusions, look for the evidence type your field treats as appropriate: a primary experiment, a systematic review, a validated dataset, a technical standard, or an official measurement. Compare methods and populations rather than counting how many search results repeat the same wording. Agreement among copied summaries is not independent confirmation.
6. Validate generated code and numerical results
Read generated code line by line. Check units, variable definitions, missing-data handling, filters, random seeds, statistical assumptions, train/test separation, and whether the code actually implements the method described in your protocol.
Run small, known test cases whose correct result you can calculate independently. Test edge cases such as empty input, duplicated records, extreme values, and missing observations. Reproduce an output from a published example where possible, then compare the model’s result with an independently implemented calculation or a trusted reference implementation. Inspect warnings and intermediate data; a script that runs without an error can still be scientifically wrong.
For analyses that materially shape findings, preserve the code, environment, inputs, settings, and validation results needed for another qualified person to reproduce the work, subject to security and confidentiality constraints.

7. Keep an audit trail
For substantive use, record the tool and model or version when available, the date, the task, the material affected, and the human checks performed. Preserve relevant prompts, settings, and input or output files when doing so is permitted and safe. This record helps collaborators review decisions and lets you satisfy a journal or funder’s reporting requirements.
How to verify AI-generated citations
Treat every citation supplied by a model as an unverified lead. Use this checklist before it enters a manuscript, report, presentation, or notebook:
- Existence: Search the publisher, repository, index, or issuing organization for the exact title, authors, date, and identifier.
- Identity: Make sure the document is the same work—not a similarly titled paper, correction, protocol, editorial, or preprint.
- Access: Open the full document or an authoritative copy. An abstract-only record may not reveal the necessary limitation.
- Location: Find the cited result in the body, table, figure, appendix, or data documentation.
- Fit: Compare the source’s population, methods, comparison, outcome, and uncertainty with your sentence.
- Currency: Check whether a retraction, correction, newer edition, or updated guideline changes what can safely be said.
- Attribution: Cite the original authors or issuing body, not the AI system that located or summarized it.
Common warning signs include a plausible-looking journal name with no searchable record, a real author paired with a nonexistent title, a precise page number that does not contain the claimed result, and a reference that supports the topic but not the conclusion. When any element fails verification, label the lead as unconfirmed and do not use it as evidence.
Keep methodological judgment with qualified people
A model can list statistical tests or suggest an interpretation, but it cannot determine whether your design answers the research question. Human reviewers must decide whether the sample is appropriate, the measurement is valid, the assumptions hold, the analysis was prespecified, and the conclusion is proportionate to the data.
Use a two-layer review for AI-assisted analysis:
- Technical review: another person checks code, transformations, formulas, software versions, and numerical outputs.
- Scientific review: a subject-matter expert checks the design, evidence quality, alternative explanations, uncertainty, and limits on generalization.
Do not ask the same model to both generate and certify a result. A self-confirming response is not independent validation. For model-assisted interpretation, preserve the underlying data and analysis decisions so a reviewer can evaluate the evidence without trusting the generated narrative.
Protect confidential and unpublished research
Do not paste identifiable patient information, unpublished results, proprietary methods, restricted datasets, peer-review materials, credentials, or other sensitive content into a public AI service unless your institution has approved that use and the service’s terms provide appropriate assurances.
Before submitting any material, check:
- what the service stores, for how long, and whether people or automated systems may access it;
- whether submitted content may be reused or used to train models;
- where data is processed and which contractual or legal restrictions apply;
- whether de-identification is sufficient for your field and jurisdiction; and
- your institution’s information-security, ethics, intellectual-property, and data-management requirements.
The European Commission highlights the possibility that uploaded material could be reused, including for model training. The CDC advises against entering sensitive, protected, or non-public data into public AI tools. Removing a name is not automatically enough: combinations of dates, locations, rare conditions, or experimental details can still identify a person or reveal confidential work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDisclose substantive use and preserve reproducibility
Disclosure rules differ among journals, funders, institutions, and research activities. Check the current policy that governs your submission instead of assuming that one publisher’s definition applies everywhere.

The CDC suggests a practical structure: Content Affected + Action Taken + AI Tool + Purpose of AI Use + Human Oversight. A disclosure should make clear what the system did and what people did to verify it. For example:
“The methods section was edited for grammar with [tool name and model/version, if available] on [date]. Authors reviewed the complete edited text and verified that terminology, claims, citations, and limitations were unchanged.”
That example is a template, not a universal wording requirement. Replace the bracketed elements with accurate information and follow the venue’s form or style.

How major guidance differs
The European Commission recommends transparent reporting of substantial uses. It notes that simple editorial assistance may not be substantial under its guidance, while using AI as a method or source, conducting a literature review, interpreting analysis, or forming hypotheses may have substantial impact. Apply the actual policy for your venue.
The CDC’s May 28, 2026 resource provides practical disclosure guidance for scientific work and describes itself as a best-practice summary rather than an exhaustive rulebook. It calls for identifying the tool and model/version when available, where it was used, and the extent of review or validation.
APA Journals states: “Authors need to take responsibility for the information provided by generative AI tools, including verifying the information received via generative AI searches by reading original sources used in AI output.” Its policy also addresses disclosure and privacy.
JAMA Network’s guidance, published online March 7, 2024, asks manuscript authors to report the platform, version, manufacturer, dates, a brief description of how and where AI was used, and confirmation that authors accept responsibility for integrity. For AI used within a scientific study, it points to relevant reporting guidance and reproducibility detail and flags identifiable patient information and intellectual-property concerns.

A decision rule for each proposed AI use
Before sending material or accepting output, ask four questions:
Best Value
- Is the task bounded? Can you state exactly what the tool may produce and what decision remains yours?
- Can the output be independently checked? Do you have access to the original source, raw data, test case, or qualified reviewer needed to validate it?
- Is the material safe to submit? Have privacy, confidentiality, intellectual-property, and institutional requirements been satisfied?
- Can you document and disclose it? Can you preserve enough information to explain the use and reproduce any substantive effect?
If the answer to the second or third question is no, do not use the tool for that step. If the answer to the fourth is no, redesign the workflow so the use can be documented, or complete the task without AI.
Failure modes and recovery steps
The citation exists but says something else
Return to the relevant passage and rewrite your sentence to match the study’s design and result. If the mismatch changes the conclusion, remove the AI-generated claim and search for a source that actually addresses it.
The model gives different answers on different runs
Do not average the responses or select the most confident one. Treat variation as a sign that the output is not a stable authority. Fix the task definition, consult primary sources, and record the prompt and settings if the tool remains part of the workflow.
The code runs but the result looks surprising
Stop the analysis. Check units, filters, joins, missing values, randomization, and intermediate outputs against a small hand-checked example. Ask a qualified reviewer to inspect the implementation before interpreting the result.
A reviewer asks whether AI was used
Provide a factual account: tool and version, dates, affected content, purpose, prompts or settings where appropriate, and the human review performed. Follow the journal, funder, or institution’s required format.
You discover sensitive data was uploaded
Stop further processing, preserve the relevant incident details, and contact your institutional privacy, security, or research-integrity office. Follow the service’s deletion process only as part of that approved response; deletion alone may not satisfy reporting or legal obligations.
Printable checklist
- Define the AI task and the decision that remains human.
- Mark every material claim, number, interpretation, citation, and code output for review.
- Find and read each original source; confirm existence, identity, and relevant evidence.
- Check population, methods, limitations, uncertainty, and whether the wording overstates causation or consensus.
- Test generated code and numerical results on known cases and inspect intermediate outputs.
- Remove confidential, personal, protected, proprietary, and unpublished material unless approved safeguards are in place.
- Record tool, version, date, purpose, affected content, prompts or settings where appropriate, and validation steps.
- Read the current rules of the institution, funder, and journal before submission.
- Disclose substantive use and affirm human responsibility for the final work.
There is no general-purpose accuracy percentage established by the official guidance discussed here. Those documents describe risks and required practices rather than a universal rate at which AI-generated scientific claims are correct. The dependable safeguard is therefore procedural: bounded use, source-level verification, tested analysis, privacy protection, and transparent human accountability.
