Start by deciding whether you need a new 4K video file or only cleaner playback. An exported file is the right choice for editing, archiving, sharing, or devices that cannot enhance video in real time. A playback enhancer is faster when you simply want compatible software and hardware to enlarge video while you watch it.
AI upscaling can improve apparent sharpness, reduce some compression artifacts, and make older footage more comfortable to view on a large display. It cannot recover detail that was never recorded, and aggressive settings can create halos, plastic-looking faces, or invented textures. The reliable workflow is to inspect the source, choose processing for its format, preview representative scenes, export at the screen’s target resolution, and check the actual file on the intended display.

Choose between an exported file and enhanced playback
Your first decision determines the entire workflow.
| Goal | Best route | What you receive | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Make a reusable 4K file for editing, archiving, sharing, or offline playback | Desktop or cloud video upscaler | A newly rendered video that can be copied and played on many devices | Rendering takes time, uses storage, and requires settings that suit the source |
| Make streaming or local playback look better without creating another file | Real-time playback enhancement | Improved output only while supported software, GPU, and display are in use | The original file remains unchanged and compatibility is conditional |
When an exported file is worth the time
Render a new file when you need to send the result to someone else, import it into an editor, preserve an improved copy, or play it on a television, console, or media player that has no compatible real-time enhancer. A rendered file also gives you a stable result that you can inspect repeatedly.

When playback enhancement is enough
If the video is watched only on one compatible computer and browser, real-time enhancement avoids a long render and a second copy of the video. NVIDIA’s RTX Video Super Resolution is documented as a playback feature for supported browsers and compatible RTX hardware; it enlarges video as it is displayed rather than writing a new master file. Check current browser and hardware support in NVIDIA’s documentation before depending on it: NVIDIA Control Panel help and the company’s RTX Video Super Resolution announcement.
Inspect the source before selecting an AI model
Do not choose a model solely because the destination is a large screen. Identify what is in the source file first.
Record the frame size and frame type
- Note the source width and height, such as 1920 × 1080 for a common 1080p file.
- Determine whether the video is progressive or interlaced. Interlaced material may show comb-like lines around moving objects when paused.
- Check whether the footage is modern digital video, a DVD or camcorder transfer, or older analog television material.
- Look for difficult content: faces, small text, hair, foliage, water, film grain, fast motion, subtitles, and hard-edged graphics.
These observations matter because enhancement and deinterlacing are different jobs. Topaz’s enhancement documentation separates progressive workflows from interlaced workflows that combine deinterlacing with enhancement: Topaz Labs Enhancement documentation.

Progressive video stores complete frames. Interlaced video stores alternating fields captured at different moments, so enlarging it before dealing with the fields can preserve or exaggerate motion artifacts. For digital-video sources such as DV, DVCPRO, DVCAM, 720i, and 1080i, Topaz documents Dione DV. For older analog TV, camcorder, DVD, and SD sources, it documents Dione TV. Those names are model choices to test, not guarantees that one setting is correct for every tape or transfer.
Set a sensible target for the large screen
For an ordinary 4K UHD television or monitor, the common target is 3840 × 2160. A 1920 × 1080 source therefore has twice the width and twice the height of the output pixel grid, producing four times as many output pixels. The extra pixels do not prove that four times as much real detail exists; the model is estimating image structure between the recorded samples.

Topaz’s 1080-to-4K guide uses this source-and-target example and recommends choosing a 4K output when that is the viewing goal: Topaz Labs’ 1080-to-4K guide. Match the output to the actual display and delivery requirement rather than selecting an unnecessarily larger frame. A giant frame can increase render time and file size without making the picture more truthful.
Keep the original aspect ratio
Do not stretch a 16:9 source to fill a screen with a different shape. Preserve the source aspect ratio and allow normal letterboxing or pillarboxing when necessary. Cropping to fill the screen is a separate creative decision and can remove captions or important edge content.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a documented model as a starting point, not a promise
For a 1080p source, Topaz’s guide recommends starting with Artemis High Quality. If that result is not satisfactory, it suggests trying Proteus Fine Tune, which gives more control for footage that needs adjustment. The enhancement documentation emphasizes that models and parameters depend on the footage and says: “Please note, every piece of footage is unique and we encourage experimentation with different models and parameters as part of the creative process.” See the 1080-to-4K guide and Enhancement documentation.
Use the recommendation as a first experiment. A model that looks excellent on a talking head can damage film grain, subtitles, or fast sports motion. Do not process an entire two-hour recording until a short representative section has passed inspection.
Desktop workflow: create and verify a 4K file

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Make a working copy. Keep the camera file, capture, or original download untouched. Work from a copy so you can change models without degrading the source.
- Import the video. Add the file to the desktop application and confirm that the detected frame rate, duration, and dimensions match the source.
- Classify the footage. Decide whether it is progressive or interlaced and whether it resembles modern digital, DV, DVD, camcorder, or analog-TV material. Select a model appropriate to that class.
- Set the output dimensions. For a 4K UHD screen, choose 3840 × 2160 when the source and aspect ratio make that appropriate. Avoid changing the frame rate unless you have a separate reason to do so.
- Choose a starting model. For 1080p progressive material, begin with Artemis High Quality. Test Proteus Fine Tune if the first preview is too soft, too sharp, or otherwise unsuitable. For interlaced material, test the documented Dione DV or Dione TV path that matches the source type.
- Preview a representative section. Include movement, a face, fine texture, text or subtitles, and a high-contrast edge if those appear in the program. Review at a useful zoom instead of judging only a tiny thumbnail.
- Compare against the original. Look for genuine edge clarity and cleaner compression, but also inspect for halos, ringing, waxy skin, smeared texture, unstable details between frames, and text that has become less legible.
- Adjust or change models. If the preview fails, reduce aggressive enhancement, use a different model, or accept that the source cannot support a convincing reconstruction. Test again on the same short section so comparisons remain fair.
- Select a codec and export. Topaz’s Quick Start identifies H.264 as the default and says it should suit most outputs up to 4K. Choose another codec only when your editing or delivery workflow requires it.
- Inspect the finished file. Open the exported file in the player and on the display where it will actually be used. Check the beginning, a difficult motion scene, dialogue close-ups, captions, and the end of the file before deleting or replacing the original.
Why previewing matters more than a model label
Upscaling errors are content-dependent. A face may look sharper while a patterned shirt turns into crawling noise; a title card may gain contrast while thin letters acquire false strokes. Previewing several representative shots exposes those failures before you spend hours rendering the full program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBrowser workflow: use Firefly when you do not want a local render
Adobe documents a Firefly video-upscaling workflow that uses Topaz Astra. Its page describes Precise and Creative modes, a speed-versus-quality preference, 1080p or 4K output choices, and MP4 download after reviewing the generated result: Adobe Firefly AI Video Upscaler.
- Open the documented video-upscaler feature and upload a suitable source.
- Choose between Precise and Creative according to whether faithful preservation or a more interpretive result is the priority.
- Select the speed or quality preference, then choose 1080p or 4K output.
- Generate a preview and inspect faces, motion, text, edges, and textures rather than accepting the first result automatically.
- Review the generated video and download the MP4 only after checking that it plays correctly and meets your intended screen and editing requirements.
Feature access, usage limits, processing time, and available output options can change. Verify the controls shown in your account before planning a long or high-resolution job. A browser workflow is convenient, but uploading sensitive or private footage may not be acceptable for every project.
Playback-only enhancement with a compatible GPU and browser
NVIDIA’s RTX Video Super Resolution is designed to enhance video as it plays in supported browsers. This route can be useful when you want a better-looking stream or local browser video immediately and do not need a new file for another device.
- Confirm that your graphics hardware, driver, and browser are supported by the current NVIDIA documentation.
- Enable the feature in the NVIDIA graphics settings described in the Control Panel help.
- Play the video in a supported browser and compare the result with the feature disabled.
- Remember that the source file is unchanged; another player, television, or editor will not automatically receive the enhanced version.
Because compatibility is conditional and browser support can change, treat this as a viewing convenience rather than an archival or production workflow. If you must deliver a 4K file, use an exporter instead.

Hardware, memory, and storage constraints
Local AI video processing is demanding, but the exact requirement depends on the application, operating system, model, resolution, and graphics hardware. Topaz’s current system-requirements page lists 16 GB of system memory as a minimum for the main application, gives different GPU and memory requirements by platform and model, and notes that some models need more graphics memory. It also warns that few processes may run at usable speed without a dedicated GPU: Topaz Video System Requirements.
Do not reduce that guidance to “every AI upscaler needs a high-end GPU.” Instead, check the current requirements for the exact model and platform you intend to use. Before starting, verify:
- Available system memory and graphics memory for the chosen model.
- Free storage for the source, temporary render files, and the output. A 4K intermediate can be much larger than the original compressed video.
- Stable power and cooling for a long render, especially on a laptop.
- A video connection and display that can accept the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Enough time to render and re-render after preview comparisons.
If the machine cannot process the job at a practical speed, a browser service may be more convenient, while playback enhancement may be sufficient for casual viewing. Hardware purchases are not automatically necessary: the right choice depends on the computer, display, storage, and connections you already own.
How to judge whether the upscale is actually better
Evaluate the result at the size and distance at which people will watch it, then inspect close enough to catch artifacts. Use the original and processed versions with the same player, scaling mode, and display settings where possible.

Positive signs
- Edges look more stable without bright outlines.
- Faces retain natural pores and hair instead of becoming smooth or painted.
- Small text is cleaner without altered letters.
- Fine textures remain consistent from frame to frame.
- Compression blocks and mosquito noise are reduced without erasing important detail.
Warning signs
- Bright or dark halos around high-contrast objects.
- Repeated, synthetic-looking patterns in grass, fabric, hair, or brick.
- Faces, hands, or logos that change shape between adjacent frames.
- Sharpening that makes noise more obvious than the original.
- Motion judder or field artifacts left over from interlaced footage.
- Captions or on-screen graphics that are less readable after processing.
There is no documented universal percentage improvement to expect on a large screen. The available product guidance describes settings, models, and requirements rather than an independent quality benchmark. Your preview on representative material is therefore the meaningful decision point.

Troubleshoot common failures
The output looks sharper but artificial
Compare a less aggressive model or parameter set, and inspect skin, hair, and repeating textures. Proteus Fine Tune may provide more control for a 1080p source than a one-click preset, but the correct adjustment depends on the footage. If the original is heavily compressed or out of focus, preserving a natural soft image can be better than forcing crisp edges.
Interlaced lines or combing remain
Return to the source classification. Use a workflow that combines deinterlacing and enhancement, such as the documented Dione DV or Dione TV choices where their source descriptions fit. Do not judge an interlaced clip from a single paused frame alone; watch motion after processing.
The render is extremely slow or fails
Check the current system-requirements page for the model, GPU memory, operating system, and application version. Close competing GPU workloads, ensure adequate free storage, and test a short segment at the same output settings. If local processing remains impractical, consider a browser workflow or playback-only enhancement instead of buying hardware solely for one project.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The file plays on the computer but not the television
Test the exported file on the exact television or media player before distributing it. Confirm that the codec, container, resolution, frame rate, and connection are supported by that device. Re-export in a broadly compatible format when necessary, while retaining the original and the first successful master.
The result is not visibly better on the large display
Check viewing distance, the display’s own scaling, and whether the source contains enough recoverable structure. A higher pixel count alone cannot recreate missing focus, motion detail, or information destroyed by compression. Compare the processed file and original under identical playback conditions before deciding that a different model is needed.
A practical decision checklist
- Do I need a reusable 4K file, or only improved playback on one compatible setup?
- What are the source dimensions, frame rate, codec, and progressive/interlaced status?
- Is the footage modern digital video, DV, DVD, camcorder, analog TV, or another source type?
- Is 3840 × 2160 the correct target for my 4K UHD display and delivery requirement?
- Have I previewed motion, faces, fine textures, text, and high-contrast edges?
- Did I compare the processed preview directly with the untouched original?
- Does my computer meet the current model-specific memory and GPU requirements?
- Have I checked the exported file on the actual player and large screen?
Bottom line for large-screen video
Use a desktop or cloud upscaler when you need a shareable, editable, or archival 4K file; use a compatible playback enhancer when you only need better viewing on one supported computer and browser. For a 1080p source headed to a 4K UHD display, 3840 × 2160 is the normal target, but model selection and source handling matter more than the number alone. Identify interlaced footage, test the documented starting model on representative scenes, inspect for invented detail and halos, and verify the exported file on the intended screen before committing to the full render.
