Ask it to turn a technology story into specific claims, suggest search terms, locate likely source documents, and organize evidence. Then verify every important detail against the original announcement, filing, paper, transcript, dataset, or product documentation, and compare independent reporting. For photos and video, investigate origin and context separately; a detector, watermark, or provenance record is only a clue.
What AI is good at—and what remains your responsibility
A language model can read a long article quickly, extract names and figures, group similar reports, translate a document, and suggest better search queries. Those abilities shorten the time between seeing a claim and finding material that may support or challenge it.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The model does not thereby know that a claim is true. It may repeat an unverified article, confuse two product versions, merge details from different countries, or invent a source that sounds plausible. Treat every AI-generated statement, citation, summary, and “confidence” score as a lead until you have opened the underlying evidence.
- AI output: a checklist of claims and possible places to look.
- Primary evidence: the company announcement, regulator filing, standards document, peer-reviewed paper, conference transcript, dataset, court record, or product documentation that actually supports a claim.
- Independent corroboration: reporting or analysis from outlets that did not simply copy the same statement.
- Your published wording: limited to what those records establish, with dates, versions, geography, measurements, and uncertainty intact.
Google News Initiative presents AI-assisted tools in this same way: they can search and organize material, but they do not validate claims for you. Google Search Central also says generative AI can help with research and structure; producing many pages without adding user value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. The useful standard is therefore not “Was AI used?” but “Did a person check the evidence and add meaningful analysis?”

A practical verification workflow
| Stage | What AI can do | What you must do | Record to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Break down the story | Extract dates, names, quotations, numbers, product identifiers, and implied conclusions. | Decide which claims are material and testable. | A numbered claim list. |
| 2. Find records | Generate search terms and identify likely documents. | Open the original record and confirm it is authentic and relevant. | Document title, publisher, date, version, and exact passage. |
| 3. Check context | Summarize what each source says and where accounts differ. | Check who published it, what evidence is supplied, and whether independent coverage agrees. | Source-by-source notes. |
| 4. Check media | Suggest reverse-search queries and compare descriptions. | Look for earlier appearances, location and date clues, edits, and corroborating records. | Image or video provenance and context findings. |
| 5. Write | Organize notes and identify unresolved contradictions. | Use only supported facts and label limits or uncertainty. | Claim-to-source map and final wording. |
1. Turn a technology story into checkable claims
Do not ask an AI system, “Is this article true?” That invites a single verdict and hides which parts are uncertain. Ask it to decompose the article instead.
Extract facts, not conclusions
Paste the text, or provide a short description, and use a prompt such as:
List every concrete claim in this technology story that could be checked. Separate claims about dates, organizations, products, versions, availability, performance, prices, locations, regulatory action, and direct quotations. For each claim, quote the relevant sentence, identify what evidence would prove or disprove it, and mark any missing qualification. Do not decide whether a claim is true.
Convert the response into a numbered checklist. A claim should be narrow enough to test. “The update is faster” is vague; “The manufacturer says version 4.2 reduced rendering time by 30% in its stated test” contains a speaker, version, figure, and measurement that can be checked.
Separate one sentence into several claims
A headline may combine an announcement, a prediction, and an interpretation. Split them. For example, a sentence saying a company “launched the first affordable satellite phone” contains at least four questions: Did it launch? What is the product name and release date? What does “affordable” mean and compared with what? Is “first” supported by a defined market and geography?
Mark the claims that deserve the most work
- Claims that change the story’s headline or reader action.
- Exact numbers, rankings, “first” or “only” language, and performance gains.
- Direct quotations and statements attributed to a named executive, researcher, or agency.
- Claims about safety, security, medical effects, legal status, or regulatory approval.
- Images or video presented as proof of an event, place, product, or person.
Keep the AI’s list as a work queue, not as evidence. If it misses a claim, add it yourself; if it invents one, remove it.
2. Find the underlying record
Ask AI for search terms, then search independently
For each claim, ask for several query variants that include the exact product name, model number, organization, date, and distinctive wording. Request searches for both support and contradiction:

For claim 3, create search queries aimed at finding the primary record, an independent confirmation, and a credible challenge. Include quoted phrases only when they are distinctive. Do not treat any result as proof.
Run those queries yourself. Give priority to the original company newsroom or documentation for what the company says; a regulator, standards body, court, or public agency for official action; the paper and supplementary material for scientific findings; and a transcript or recording for quotations. A secondary article can help you discover the record, but it is not a substitute when the record is available.
Use document-search AI for discovery
Google News Initiative describes Pinpoint as a journalism tool that combines search, machine learning, optical character recognition, and speech-to-text. It can search collections containing scanned PDFs, images, handwritten notes, email, and audio. That makes it useful when a relevant record is buried in a mixed archive or when ordinary text search cannot read a scan.
Pinpoint’s ability to locate a passage does not establish that the passage is accurate, current, complete, or correctly interpreted. Open the document, check the page or timestamp, and confirm that the item is the authoritative version. Preserve the surrounding paragraph: a clipped sentence can reverse the meaning of a qualification.
Capture identity and version details
For every source, record the publisher, document title, publication date, update date if shown, jurisdiction, product or model, software version, test conditions, and page or timestamp. A later revision may change a specification. A United States filing may not establish availability in another country. A beta feature may not describe the released product.
3. Check who made the claim and what evidence it provides
Evaluate the publisher before the prose
Ask:
- Who is publishing this, and what is the organization’s role?
- Is the item an announcement, an opinion, a leaked document, a preliminary result, or a final record?
- Does it identify methods, data, dates, limitations, and responsible people?
- Is the wording reporting what someone claims, or asserting an independently established fact?
Do not treat a polished press release as independent confirmation. It can be the best source for what a company announced, while still being a weak source for whether a performance claim holds in general use.
Compare genuinely independent coverage
Find other reporting that names its own sources, links to records, or includes original interviews and measurements. Check whether apparently different articles trace back to the same wire copy, press release, social post, or unnamed source. Five repetitions of one unsupported sentence are not five confirmations.

Google’s misinformation guidance recommends checking who published a story, looking for other coverage, consulting fact-checkers, examining image context, and comparing a claimed location with geographic references. Apply those checks to technology stories as well as political or viral claims.
Use Fact Check Explorer for published checks
Google News Initiative describes Fact Check Explorer as a way to find checks previously published by independent fact-checking organizations. Its image and text matches can surface related checks and context. It searches publicly available, crawlable material from eligible fact-check articles using ClaimReview markup.
That coverage boundary matters. A matching result shows that a fact-checking organization published a relevant check; read the article to understand its evidence and scope. No matching result means only that the tool found no eligible, crawlable check for that query. It is not a verdict that the claim is true, false, or new.

Numbers
Copy the figure exactly, then identify who measured it, under what conditions, against which baseline, and whether it is a one-time result or a recurring price or limit. “Up to 40% faster” may be a vendor’s best-case laboratory result, not a general expectation. Check the units, sample size, test workload, hardware, software build, and whether the comparison used the same settings.
If the source does not state a qualifying detail, write “the source does not state it” rather than filling the gap with an AI assumption. Do not repeat a promotional allowance as a permanent limit or a launch price as a current price.
Dates and availability
Distinguish announcement, preorder, beta, general release, discontinuation, and shipping date. Check the region and edition. A feature documented for an enterprise plan may not be present in a consumer version. If a source has been updated, preserve both the original date and the update date when they affect meaning.

Quotations
Locate the recording, transcript, filing, or complete interview. Confirm the speaker, event, date, and whether the quote was translated or edited. Search the surrounding passage for qualifiers such as “could,” “in our tests,” or “we have not verified.” Never ask an AI system to reconstruct a quote from memory.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Check images and video as a separate investigation
An authentic file can be attached to a false caption, an old photograph can be presented as a new event, and a synthetic image can depict a real location. Verify the media and the claim about it as two different questions.
Look for earlier appearances
Use reverse-image search or Fact Check Explorer to find earlier publications, captions, and fact-checks. Compare the earliest credible appearance with the claimed date. Inspect distinctive signs, weather, buildings, screens, logos, and shadows; then compare the claimed location with maps, geographic references, public webcams, event schedules, or other records.
Interpret detectors and watermarks cautiously
Associated Press reporter Melissa Goldin cautions: “Ultimately though, it’s not always possible to determine with 100% accuracy whether an image is AI-generated so remain alert to the possibility it might not be real.” AI detectors can be wrong, especially after resizing, compression, screenshots, or editing. A watermark may be cropped or removed, so its absence does not show that an image is genuine.
OpenAI explains that provenance signals can indicate something about origin, but they do not guarantee factual accuracy, legal ownership, or correct context. Metadata may be stripped, and some transformations can make a watermark undetectable. A provenance record can support a statement such as “this file was generated or edited by a particular system,” but it cannot prove that the scene happened as the caption claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWrite the media finding precisely
Use wording that matches the evidence: “The same image appears in an earlier report about a different event,” “the file contains a provenance signal indicating editing,” or “available checks did not establish the image’s origin.” Avoid upgrading a clue into “real,” “fake,” or “AI-generated” unless the evidence genuinely supports that conclusion.
Best Value
6. Resolve conflicting reports without forcing a verdict
When sources disagree, ask the AI to build a comparison matrix rather than choose a winner:
Create a table for this claim with columns for source, exact wording, date, evidence cited, geographic or product scope, assumptions, and unresolved conflict. Do not rank the sources until the evidence and scope are explicit.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are the sources discussing the same model or version? | Similar names can hide different hardware, software builds, or subscription tiers. |
| Do they measure the same thing? | Battery endurance, benchmark score, and “user experience” are not interchangeable. |
| Were the dates and regions the same? | Availability, rules, prices, and test conditions change. |
| Do they rely on the same original statement? | Copied reporting creates an illusion of corroboration. |
| Is one source reporting a plan and another a completed result? | Intentions and outcomes require different wording. |
If the conflict cannot be resolved, publish the disagreement and explain which fact is established, which remains disputed, and what evidence is missing. “Unconfirmed” is a useful result; it is not a failure to write.
7. Write only what the evidence supports
Use claim-to-source notes
Before drafting, keep a simple record with one row per material claim: claim number, exact wording you plan to use, primary source, independent source, qualification, and status. “Confirmed” should mean the source actually supports your wording, not merely that it contains similar keywords.
Preserve uncertainty in the sentence
- “The company announced…” for a company’s own statement.
- “The paper reports…” for a study’s result.
- “Regulatory records show…” for an official action.
- “Independent testing cited by…” when the result is not your own test.
- “Available records do not establish…” when a key point remains unverified.
Do not turn “may,” “up to,” “in a limited test,” or “the company expects” into an unconditional fact. Keep the original date, model, location, and measurement in the same paragraph as the figure they qualify.
Keep AI’s fingerprints out of the evidence chain
AI can propose an outline or identify duplicate passages, but do not cite the model as the authority for a fact. Replace every AI-generated citation with the source you opened and checked. If the model summarizes a long document, verify the quoted passage yourself before publication.
Pinpoint and Fact Check Explorer: choose by task
| Tool | Best use | What it searches | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinpoint | Finding passages in a mixed research collection. | Materials such as scanned PDFs, images, handwritten notes, email, and audio, using search, OCR, and speech-to-text. | That a located passage is authentic, current, complete, or true. |
| Fact Check Explorer | Finding existing checks and related context for a claim or image. | Publicly available, crawlable fact-check articles from eligible organizations using ClaimReview markup, including image and text matches. | That a claim is true when no result appears, or that a matching article settles the matter without reading its evidence. |
The available descriptions do not establish current pricing, account requirements, full geographic availability, or a complete feature comparison for either tool. Treat them as examples of different research tasks, not as interchangeable verification engines.
Prompt templates that keep verification on track
Claim extraction
Extract checkable claims from the text below. For each, include the exact sentence, entities, date, number, version, location, source named, and the primary record I should seek. Flag ambiguous wording. Do not label any claim true or false.
Primary-source discovery
For each claim, suggest searches for the original announcement, filing, paper, transcript, standard, dataset, or documentation. Give separate queries for supporting and contradicting evidence. Do not invent links or sources.
Source comparison
Compare these documents claim by claim. Quote the relevant passages, note differences in date, geography, model, method, and certainty, and list conflicts that require human review. Do not resolve a conflict by guessing.
Draft audit
Audit this draft against the attached source notes. Identify every sentence that adds an unsupported fact, loses a qualification, changes a number or date, overstates causation, or treats a lack of evidence as proof. Return suggested corrections, not new facts.
A worked example: checking a performance announcement
Imagine a company post says a new phone chip is “twice as fast” and “available worldwide.” The wording is hypothetical; the method is what matters.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Split the claims: the chip exists; it is in a named product; “twice as fast” refers to a defined test; and “worldwide” describes availability.
- Find the records: locate the announcement, technical brief, benchmark methodology, product page, and regional launch notices.
- Test the performance claim: identify the baseline chip, workload, hardware, software version, test settings, and whether the figure is a best-case “up to” result.
- Test availability: check shipping or sales records by country and distinguish announcement from actual retail access.
- Compare reporting: look for independent tests and note whether they used the same workload and device configuration.
- Write the result: if only the company’s test supports the number, say that. If a region is excluded, replace “worldwide” with the documented countries. If no primary benchmark method is available, state that limitation.
The AI can organize this trail and highlight missing fields. It cannot supply a missing benchmark methodology or convert a marketing superlative into a measured fact.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Asking “Is this true?” and accepting a yes or no. | It hides multiple claims and encourages overconfidence. | Extract a numbered claim list and test each item. |
| Using the first search result as the source. | Search ranking is not evidence quality. | Trace the statement to the original record and preserve context. |
| Counting repeated articles as independent confirmation. | They may all copy one press release or post. | Identify each outlet’s original reporting and evidence. |
| Treating no Fact Check Explorer result as a clean bill of health. | The tool covers eligible, crawlable published checks only. | Investigate primary records and other reporting. |
| Calling an image genuine because no detector flagged it. | Detectors can miss altered or compressed media. | Check earlier appearances, place, date, and corroborating records. |
| Calling an image fake because a detector flagged it. | Detectors can produce false positives. | Seek provenance, original files, and independent media analysis. |
| Dropping qualifiers during editing. | “Up to,” “could,” and “in a test” materially change meaning. | Keep each qualifier beside the number or conclusion it limits. |
| Letting AI create many lightly edited pages. | Volume does not add user value and may trigger Google’s scaled content abuse policy. | Publish fewer, evidence-based pieces with original verification and explanation. |
Final pre-publication checklist
- Every headline-level claim is numbered and tied to a source you opened.
- Primary records are distinguished from company statements, commentary, leaks, and copied reports.
- Dates, model names, software versions, regions, units, and test conditions are exact.
- Quotes match a transcript, recording, filing, or complete interview.
- Independent coverage is genuinely independent and does not merely repeat the same source.
- Images and video have been checked for earlier appearances and claimed place and date.
- Detector, watermark, and provenance findings are described as signals, not proof of truth or context.
- Missing evidence is stated plainly rather than replaced with an AI inference.
- AI-generated citations, statistics, and summaries have been replaced or confirmed with the underlying material.
- The finished article adds analysis and evidence instead of publishing unedited generated text.
The bottom line
AI makes technology-news verification faster by helping you discover documents, extract claims, search mixed archives, and organize contradictions. Accuracy still comes from the human steps after discovery: opening the original record, checking context and scope, comparing independent reporting, and writing only what the evidence supports. For media, provenance and detection tools can illuminate origin or editing history, but neither one proves that the depicted event happened or that its caption is correct.
