How to Use AI to Compare the Real Costs of Trading

AI may help retail traders organize trade records and interpret broker disclosures, but the sources available do not show that any particular AI tool finds every trading cost or improves execution. The useful starting point is to know what a trade can cost, then check whether a tool has the data and method to measure it.

A zero-commission trade is not necessarily cost-free. Commissions are only one explicit charge; spreads, market impact, delays and orders that never fill can also affect the result. Those implicit costs are not always fees charged by a broker: some arise from market conditions or the choices involved in placing an order.

What are the hidden costs of trading?

“Hidden” can mean costs that do not appear on a commission line, not necessarily undisclosed charges. CFA Institute distinguishes explicit transaction costs—such as commissions, transaction taxes, stamp duties and exchange fees—from implicit costs associated with execution. Its 2026 reading on trading costs and electronic markets describes several measures and why no single one captures every trade’s cost.

  • Bid–ask spread: The difference between the best available buying and selling prices. A trader buying at the ask and selling at the bid may incur a cost even if the broker charges no commission.
  • Market impact: A trade can move the price against the trader, particularly when its size is large relative to available liquidity.
  • Delay: A price can change while an order is waiting to be submitted, routed or filled.
  • Unfilled orders: An order that does not execute can create an opportunity cost if the market moves before the trader can act or the order expires.

These effects depend on the order, security, market conditions and measurement window. They are reasons to look beyond a broker’s advertised commission, not proof that a particular broker charged an undisclosed fee.

How can you tell whether an execution was good?

Start with your own order and fill records and compare them with a clearly defined benchmark. Common measures answer different questions; a number without its method and time window can be misleading.

Measure What it can indicate Important limitation
Effective spread Compares the execution price with the prevailing midpoint, often as a way to assess execution relative to the quoted market. It can be a poor estimate of actual cost when a large order fills in pieces over time, or when a small order receives price improvement.
Implementation shortfall Aims to capture explicit and implicit costs, including market impact, delay and opportunity costs. Its result depends on the chosen reference point and the completeness and timing of the order data.
VWAP comparison Compares the trader’s average fill price with the market’s average price over a stated period. It may understate costs if it misses market impact; the chosen period also affects the comparison.

When evaluating a broker or an analysis tool, ask whether the comparison uses your actual order and fills, contemporaneous quotes, and a stated measurement window. Find out which costs are included and what the benchmark leaves out. A better-looking score is not meaningful if the inputs or assumptions differ.

What do Rule 606 reports and payment for order flow tell you?

In the United States, Rule 606 order-routing disclosures can help investors examine where certain orders are routed and what compensation or other arrangements may be involved. The SEC staff’s Rule 606 FAQ describes public disclosures that include more detailed information about payments received from or made to certain trading centers, terms of payment-for-order-flow or profit-sharing arrangements, and reports made available on a free, readily accessible website for three years. The reporting requirements depend on the order and arrangement; review the applicable broker disclosure rather than assuming every detail appears in the same way.

Payment for order flow (PFOF) is compensation a broker may receive for routing orders to a trading center. The SEC’s 2020 Report to Congress on Algorithmic Trading describes how retail brokers have historically routed many marketable retail orders to wholesale market makers. Those firms may provide price improvement—an execution inside the national best bid and offer—or size improvement, while some brokers receive PFOF for routing orders to them. That creates an incentive worth examining, but it does not establish that every order routed this way receives a worse execution.

Rule 606 information is not a full account of an individual fill. It can help you understand routing practices and related arrangements, but assessing a specific execution also requires looking at your order details, fill price and relevant market data. The SEC’s 2001 discussion of execution and routing disclosures notes that order-flow compensation can include non-cash benefits and discounts as well as monetary payments; treat that material as historical context, and consult current broker disclosures and applicable rules for current terms.

These Rule 606 and FINRA examples are U.S.-specific. In the EU, the text of MiFIR Article 39a prohibits covered investment firms from receiving third-party fees, commissions or non-monetary benefits for executing or forwarding client orders to a particular venue. It also describes a temporary exemption for certain qualifying firms in some Member States through 30 June 2026. Because that date has passed, do not assume the exemption is still available: the current status of country-specific implementation or later changes is not established here. Consult the current local rules and your firm’s disclosures.

Where might AI help—and what has not been established?

AI could help organize records, categorize costs, summarize broker disclosures or compare a fill with a benchmark. These are plausible uses, not verified capabilities of a particular product. The sources cited here do not test a named AI trading-cost analyzer, establish its accuracy or demonstrate that AI improves retail execution. Treat performance claims as unproven unless the provider supplies product-specific evidence, a clear methodology, relevant market data and a defined time period.

The result depends on the quality of the inputs and the assumptions behind the calculation. If a tool lacks actual order and fill records, contemporaneous quotes or a stated benchmark window, it may not be able to give a meaningful estimate of your execution costs. Ask whether it includes commissions and other charges, spreads, market impact, delay and unfilled orders, and whether it explains what its chosen measure omits.

FINRA’s guidance on automated investment tools advises investors to review fees and expenses, ask how the provider is compensated, and understand the tool’s assumptions and limitations. A tool may not account for taxes, personal circumstances or changing goals. An organized result is not a substitute for checking whether the data and method answer your question.

How is analysis software different from auto-trading?

An analysis tool may read or summarize information without placing orders. An auto-trading service can send instructions to a brokerage account. The distinction matters: granting account access or trading permission raises risks beyond whether a cost estimate is accurate.

FINRA’s 29 July 2025 alert, “Know the Risks of Auto-Trading Services Offered by Unregistered Entities,” says it has identified an increase in unregistered entities claiming to offer auto-trading services to retail investors. It warns about unsupported performance claims, AI-washing, misleading partnership claims, and risks from sharing brokerage credentials or personal information. FINRA puts the point plainly: “Any auto-trading investment service should be able to explain with specificity how its technology works.”

Before connecting an account or relying on a provider’s claims, check its registration where required, verify claimed partnerships directly, and use FINRA BrokerCheck to review individuals and firms. Be skeptical of guarantees and vague claims about AI, and monitor account activity even when using a regulated service. Never treat a technology label as evidence of performance.

A practical checklist for comparing tools or brokers

  • Coverage: Which explicit charges and implicit costs are included? Are market impact, delay and unfilled orders considered, or only commissions and spreads?
  • Data and timing: Does the analysis use your actual orders and fills, contemporaneous quotes and a stated measurement window?
  • Method: Does it identify whether it uses effective spread, implementation shortfall, VWAP or another benchmark, and explain what that measure leaves out?
  • Incentives: Does the provider or broker receive compensation, rebates or other benefits connected with its recommendations or routing?
  • Fees and access: What does the tool cost, how can you cancel, and does it request brokerage credentials or permission to trade?
  • Evidence and oversight: Are performance statements specific and independently substantiated? Can you verify registration and claimed partnerships?

For your own comparison, retain the order type, timestamps, quoted prices, fill prices and fees needed to evaluate trades. A paper journal can help record those details for later analysis, but it does not calculate execution costs by itself.
