Use AI to speed up design, coding and prototyping—but treat every generated line of code, permission, connector and configuration as untrusted until a qualified person reviews and tests it. Start by defining the app’s security boundary, then enforce least-privilege access, minimize data sent to models, constrain integrations and write operations, require human approval for high-impact actions, and monitor the system throughout its life.
What “secure AI-assisted development” actually means
An internal app is not automatically safe because it runs behind a firewall or was produced by a reputable model. The app may expose company information through an overly broad query, leak a secret copied into a prompt, accept instructions hidden in uploaded documents, or let a connector perform a destructive action without a second check.

AI changes the development process, not the underlying security obligations. Authentication, authorization, input validation, output handling, dependency management, logging, threat modeling and incident response still apply. AI adds additional attack surfaces: prompts, retrieved context, model outputs, generated code, tool calls and the provider’s handling of submitted data.

Its central practical instruction is: “Code the handling of inputs (including prompts and user data) and outputs carefully.” That means validating and sanitizing model inputs and outputs in context, logging them appropriately, and dropping or quarantining material that fails policy checks.

Define the security boundary before you write a prompt
The first prompt should describe requirements, not request unrestricted access. Write down what the app may store, retrieve and change before asking an AI system to design anything.
Classify the data
List every data class the app will touch and assign an owner. Typical categories include public information, ordinary internal records, confidential business data, personal information, financial records, health information and regulated material. For each class, record whether the model may see it at design time, at runtime, both or neither.
Also document retention, residency and deletion requirements. A model provider’s general statement that it “protects data” is not a substitute for checking the terms that apply to your account, region, model and service tier.

Map users, systems and actions
Create a simple boundary diagram showing:
- Human users and their business roles.
- Identity providers, service accounts and groups.
- Databases, file stores, queues and APIs.
- AI models, retrieval indexes and connectors.
- Actions that only read data and actions that create, modify, delete, send or publish it.
For every arrow, state the minimum data and permission required. If you cannot explain why a component needs access, it should not have that access.
Record acceptable risk and approval requirements
Put security requirements in the product backlog alongside functional requirements. Define which failures are tolerable, which require an alert and which must block release. Mark operations that need a person’s approval—for example, exporting customer records, changing identity settings, sending an external message or altering production configuration.
A prompt that asks for a new data source, connector or permission is a design change. Compare it with the written boundary before accepting the generated solution.
Choose an approach by its controls, not its convenience
AI can generate a custom service, help configure a low-code workflow or assist with an existing internal platform. The safest choice is the approach that gives your team enough control to meet its obligations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Control area | AI-assisted custom code | Low-code or platform app | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity and data permissions | Designed and implemented by your team | Often provides built-in roles, but configuration determines the result | Per-user authorization, source-level enforcement and periodic access review |
| Isolation and network boundaries | Can be tailored, but every boundary must be built and maintained | Platform defaults may help; tenant, environment and connector settings still matter | Private endpoints where required, outbound restrictions and environment separation |
| Connectors and write actions | Explicit API scopes and code-level checks are possible | Convenient connectors can hide broad permissions | Connector inventory, approved operations and blocked or reviewed writes |
| Review of generated code and configuration | Full source review is possible | Expressions, policies and generated flows also require review | Version control, peer approval and reproducible deployment |
| Audit and monitoring | Must be implemented and integrated with existing logging | Platform telemetry may be available, subject to configuration and retention | Useful events for access, data movement, configuration changes and model activity |
| Compliance fit | Flexible, but your organization carries more operational responsibility | Controls may accelerate compliance evidence but do not guarantee it | Contractual terms, regional processing, retention and export requirements |
Low-code reduces some coding effort; it does not remove security work. Platform configuration, development practices and organizational processes determine whether the resulting app is safe.
Minimize what the model can see
Keep secrets and unnecessary business data out of prompts
Never paste passwords, API keys, private certificates, session tokens or connection strings into a chat or code-generation prompt. Do not include a full customer export when a synthetic sample or a few redacted fields will answer the design question. Replace names, identifiers and free-text notes with representative placeholders before sharing examples.
Use a managed secrets store at runtime. The application should retrieve a secret through an identity-bound mechanism, not read it from source code, a prompt, a notebook or a configuration file committed to version control.

Check provider data-use terms
Confirm whether prompts, files and outputs are retained, used for service improvement, reviewed by humans, transferred across regions or available to other tenants. Match those terms to your organization’s data-protection policy and regulatory commitments. If the terms are unsuitable, keep sensitive material out of that service or use an approved deployment with the required controls.
Restrict runtime retrieval
Retrieval-augmented features should search only approved sources and only with the requesting user’s effective permissions. Do not create one shared index containing every internal document and rely on the model to “choose wisely.” Enforce filters before retrieval and again before displaying an answer.
Treat retrieved text as data, not instructions. An uploaded document can contain prompt-injection text that attempts to override system rules or request a secret. Separate system instructions from retrieved content, label untrusted text, and validate any proposed tool call independently of the model’s explanation.
Implement least privilege at every layer
Authenticate users and authorize each operation
Require an organization-managed identity and strong authentication appropriate to the app’s risk. Authorization should be checked for every request and every record-level operation, not only when the user opens the app. A user who can view one department’s records must not gain another department’s data by changing an identifier in a URL or prompt.
Avoid broad shared identities. If a workflow needs a service account, give it only the scopes required for that workflow, isolate it from interactive users and rotate its credentials through the approved secrets system.

Application checks are valuable but should not be the sole barrier. Databases, file repositories and business platforms should enforce their own roles, row or record filters and field restrictions. In Microsoft Power Platform, for example, Dataverse provides role-based and column-level security that can enforce boundaries below the app layer.
Share apps and their underlying data only with people who need them. Review group membership, connector permissions and service-account scopes when responsibilities change. Microsoft Entra guidance reports that more than 90% of identities use less than 5% of the permissions granted, while more than 50% of those permissions are classified as high risk. Microsoft presents these as its own telemetry; the visible guidance does not state the collection year or methodology, so use the figures as a warning about over-permissioning rather than as a universal benchmark.
Separate environments and duties
Use distinct development, test and production environments where the platform supports them. Keep production data out of development prompts and test fixtures unless it has been safely anonymized. Separate the people who build a workflow from those who approve its release and those who administer production access.
Constrain connectors, network paths and consequential actions
Inventory every integration
Maintain a current list of models, plugins, APIs, webhooks, databases, file stores and third-party connectors. For each one, record its owner, data exchanged, authentication method, permitted operations, network route and failure behavior. Remove unused connectors; dormant integrations are still attack paths.
Prefer read-only and narrowly scoped operations
Give an AI feature read access when it only needs to answer a question. If it must write, expose a purpose-built operation with a narrow schema instead of a general database or shell connection. Validate object identifiers, allowed fields, quantities, recipients and date ranges on the server side.

Restrict outbound network access to approved destinations. Block arbitrary URL fetching unless the use case genuinely requires it and the destination, content type, size and rate are controlled. Do not allow a model to select an unreviewed endpoint merely because it appears in generated code.
Put humans in the path of high-impact actions
Microsoft recommends pausing for human review before high-risk operations such as external data transfers or system-configuration changes. Implement that pause as a real workflow state, not a message asking the model to “be careful.” Show the reviewer the exact records, destination, proposed change, identity that requested it and applicable policy. Require an authenticated approval, record the decision and expire stale requests.
For lower-risk actions, you may use thresholds, dual approval or automatic execution with rollback. The threshold should be explicit—for example, a small internal update may run automatically while a bulk export, deletion or external email always requires approval.

Review behavior, not just syntax
Read generated code line by line or have a qualified reviewer do so. Check authentication flows, authorization conditions, error paths, logging, rate limits, cryptography, serialization, file handling and dependency versions. Look for hidden administrator accounts, hard-coded tokens, permissive cross-origin settings, unsafe deserialization, shell execution and queries assembled from user text.
Generated configuration deserves the same scrutiny. A model can enable a connector, expose a storage bucket, grant an environment-wide role or turn off a safety policy while producing a perfectly valid deployment file.
Validate inputs and outputs in context
Define schemas for user input, retrieved documents and tool arguments. Reject unexpected fields, excessive sizes and invalid encodings before they reach a model or backend. Constrain model responses to a typed format where possible, then validate the result before taking action.
Escape output for its destination. Text displayed in a browser, inserted into a SQL query, rendered in an email or passed to a command interpreter has different safety rules. Do not assume that a model’s natural-language answer is safe to render or execute.
Scan dependencies and model components
Pin and review libraries, container images, packages, extensions and model adapters. Use software-composition analysis and vulnerability scanning appropriate to your stack. Track where a model or prompt template came from, what license applies and how it will be updated. A generated dependency is not trusted merely because it appears in a plausible import statement.
Threat-model and test before release
Model abuse cases
Walk through attacks that are specific to AI-enabled apps:
- A user supplies a prompt that attempts to bypass role checks.
- A document contains instructions that redirect the model to reveal confidential context.
- A model output includes a forged approval or an unsafe tool argument.
- An attacker manipulates retrieval terms to obtain records outside their scope.
- A connector returns malicious content that is then rendered or executed.
- A service outage or model change causes the app to fail open.
For each case, identify the preventive control, detection signal, owner and recovery action. Revisit the model when data sources, prompts, connectors, permissions or model versions change.

Automate the checks that can be automated
Include unit and integration tests for authorization, tenant isolation, filtering, input limits, output encoding and approval gates. Add negative tests that prove a user cannot read another group’s data or invoke a blocked operation. Run static analysis, dependency scans, secret detection and infrastructure-policy checks in continuous integration.
Test model behavior with adversarial prompts, hostile documents, malformed tool arguments and ambiguous requests. Record the model version, system prompt, retrieval configuration and tool policy used for each test so a regression can be reproduced.
Use independent review for material risk
Require a peer or security reviewer to approve changes affecting sensitive data, identity, external connectivity or production writes. For regulated or high-impact workflows, involve the relevant privacy, legal, compliance and business owners before launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Release with evidence and a rollback path
A production release should have an owner, a versioned artifact, an approved threat model, test results, permission assignments and a documented rollback procedure. Deploy through a controlled pipeline rather than copying generated snippets directly into production.
Start with a limited pilot using representative but non-sensitive data. Define success and stop conditions, such as unexpected access, policy violations, excessive model refusals or unexplained outbound traffic. Expand access only after the pilot’s findings are resolved.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Keep a record of model and connector versions. A provider can change model behavior without changing your application code, so a previously accepted prompt or tool policy may need to be retested after a model update.
Monitor the app after launch
Log useful security events
Capture authentication results, authorization denials, data-source access, connector calls, write operations, approval decisions, configuration changes and model or prompt-policy failures. Log enough context to investigate—such as user, role, object, action and outcome—without placing secrets or unnecessary personal data in logs.
Protect log integrity, restrict who can read logs and define retention periods. Redact prompt content when full text is not required for investigation.
Alert on unusual behavior
Look for sudden increases in retrieval volume, access across many departments, repeated denied requests, unusual destinations, new connectors, privilege changes and attempts to invoke tools outside their normal pattern. Rate limits and circuit breakers can contain an automated loop while an operator investigates.
Review permissions and controls continuously
Schedule access recertification and remove stale users, groups, connectors and service accounts. Reassess the threat model after incidents, significant business changes, new data sources, model updates or changes to approval thresholds. Feed findings into the backlog rather than treating launch as the end of security work.

Common failure modes and practical fixes
“The model wrote it, so it must be secure”
Failure: Generated code is merged without review because it compiles or passes a happy-path demo.
Fix: Apply normal peer review, security testing, dependency scanning and release approval. Examine input, output, identity and error-handling paths specifically.
“The app is internal, so broad access is acceptable”
Failure: A shared identity or environment-wide connector lets every user reach data needed by only one team.
Fix: Authorize per user and per operation, enforce restrictions at the source, and review assignments on a schedule.
“We can paste a real export into the prompt temporarily”
Failure: Sensitive records, credentials or personal data enter a chat history or provider system without approval.
Fix: Use synthetic or redacted examples, verify provider terms and keep secrets in a managed store.
“The model can decide whether an action is safe”
Failure: Natural-language reasoning becomes the only control before an external transfer, deletion or configuration change.

“Low-code handles security for us”
Failure: Default roles, connector permissions or environment settings are assumed to match the organization’s policy.
Fix: Configure least privilege, verify source-level controls, test negative cases and retain audit evidence.
