Use an AI coding assistant as a constrained implementation partner, not as an authority. The reliable pattern is a short, repeatable loop: define one bounded change, provide the relevant context and acceptance criteria, inspect the generated diff, understand every line, run appropriate tests and security checks, then obtain normal human review and record the decision. This preserves engineering judgment while still gaining help with repetitive code, explanations, test ideas, debugging and small refactors.
What code quality means when AI is involved
Code that compiles is only the starting point. A quality change also has the intended behavior, handles edge cases, protects data and permissions, remains readable, fits the project architecture, uses dependencies responsibly and can be maintained by the team. An assistant can produce plausible code that is wrong, insecure, incomplete or inconsistent with those requirements. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance warns that generated code and explanations can be inaccurate or incomplete, so fluent prose is not evidence of correctness.

The assistant does not know your unstated constraints. It may infer the wrong business rule, use an API version your project does not support, bypass an existing abstraction, broaden a database query, expose a secret in a log, or add a package with an unsuitable license. Those are engineering failures even when the output passes a narrow happy-path test.

A 2024 qualitative study by Klemmer and colleagues interviewed 27 software professionals and reviewed 190 relevant Reddit posts and comments. Participants reported using assistants for security-critical activities while also expressing security and quality concerns, and described checking suggestions much as they check human-written code. Those sample counts describe the study method; they are not a representative survey, a defect rate or proof of a universal productivity or quality effect.

Start by deciding whether the task is bounded
Before opening a chat or accepting an inline completion, decide whether the request can be stated as one behavior with a reviewable result. A bounded task has a clear input, output, scope and definition of done. Ask the assistant to change one behavior at a time and state what must not change.
Good first tasks
- Generate repetitive code that follows an established local pattern.
- Explain an unfamiliar function, data flow or error message.
- Suggest edge cases and draft tests alongside test-driven development.
- Propose a small refactor with no externally visible behavior change.
- Draft a narrowly scoped adapter, serializer or validation rule.
- Suggest debugging hypotheses from a reproducible failure and relevant logs.
Tasks that need tighter controls
- Authentication, authorization, cryptography, payment, safety-critical or privacy-sensitive code.
- Schema migrations, infrastructure changes and permission-policy edits.
- Changes that cross many services or alter public APIs.
- Requests involving confidential, personal, classified or otherwise restricted data.
- Broad prompts such as "rewrite this service for performance" with no measured bottleneck or acceptance criteria.
Large work can still benefit from an assistant, but split it into reviewable slices. First ask for a plan and affected symbols, then implement one slice, verify it, and only then continue. Do not let a single response become an unreviewable replacement for design and implementation.
Give the assistant the context a reviewer would need
Specific requirements produce a more bounded result than a vague request. GitHub’s Copilot guidance recommends supplying relevant files, examples and constraints, and breaking complex work into smaller steps. The same principle applies to any assistant.
Include the minimum useful context
- Location: name the repository area, files, classes, functions or symbols that may change.
- Environment: state the language, framework, runtime and package versions when they affect the API.
- Existing conventions: show a nearby implementation, naming rules, error-handling style and test pattern.
- Behavior: describe valid and invalid inputs, expected outputs, side effects and failure handling.
- Constraints: identify performance limits, compatibility requirements, forbidden dependencies, data-handling rules and files that must not change.
- Acceptance criteria: list observable conditions that a reviewer or test can verify.
Examples are particularly valuable. A request such as "add validation" is ambiguous; a request that gives three valid inputs, three invalid inputs, the required error type and the unchanged public method signature is testable. Do not paste secrets merely to improve context. Replace credentials, tokens, personal data and proprietary values with safe fixtures that preserve the relevant shape.
A practical prompt pattern
Task: Add one validation rule to UserImport.parseRow.Context: TypeScript 5.x, existing errors use InvalidRowError; tests are in test/user-import.spec.ts.Must preserve: public method signature, CSV column order, and current handling of blank optional fields.Behavior: reject duplicate email addresses within the same file, case-insensitively; keep the first row's line number in the error.Acceptance: add tests for a duplicate with different case, a unique address, and two separate files.Output: propose a short plan, then a focused patch. Do not add dependencies.
Requesting a plan before code is useful when the change touches several abstractions. It exposes assumptions while they are still cheap to correct. Once the scope is agreed, ask for a focused patch rather than an entire rewritten file.
Use a reviewable generation loop
- State the task and boundaries. Write the behavior, files or symbols in scope, non-goals and acceptance criteria. If you cannot describe what success looks like, pause for design work instead of asking for code.
- Ask for a proposal or small change. For a multi-step task, request a plan and list of intended files first. For a simple task, request the smallest implementation that satisfies the stated behavior.
- Inspect the diff. Review the actual patch in version control, not just the assistant’s explanation. Look for unrelated edits, changed defaults, widened permissions, altered error semantics, silent dependency additions and generated code copied farther than necessary.
- Check architectural fit. Compare the change with existing interfaces, layering, transaction boundaries, observability and deployment assumptions. A locally elegant function can still violate a system-level invariant.
- Understand every accepted line. Read unfamiliar APIs and ask targeted questions about assumptions, complexity, failure modes and data flow. If the explanation is unclear, inspect the documentation and source yourself; do not treat a confident explanation as proof.
- Run focused checks. Execute the smallest relevant unit or component tests first so failures are easy to attribute. Then run the project’s normal broader checks before review or merge.
- Review and record. Use the ordinary pull-request and approval path. Record the useful context, tests run, known limitations and any AI assistance required by policy.
Keep the assistant’s output separate from the decision to merge. The human owner remains accountable for whether the change belongs in the product and whether the evidence supports that decision.

Review the diff against all quality dimensions
| Dimension | Questions to ask | Typical AI failure |
|---|---|---|
| Behavior | Does it implement the stated rule for normal, boundary and invalid inputs? Are errors and retries correct? | Happy-path code that mishandles empty, duplicate, reordered or partial input. |
| Security | Does it preserve authentication, authorization, validation, isolation, logging and secret-handling requirements? | Trusting client input, logging sensitive values or granting a broader permission than intended. |
| Readability | Can a team member understand the control flow and intent? Does it follow local naming and error conventions? | Overly clever abstractions, duplicated branches or comments that describe the wrong behavior. |
| Maintainability | Will future changes have one clear place to go? Is complexity justified and observable? | Large generated blocks, brittle regular expressions or needless wrappers. |
| Dependencies | Is every new package necessary, supported, licensed acceptably and free of known serious advisories? | Adding a package for a small utility or selecting an obsolete API. |
| Architecture | Does the change respect module boundaries, data ownership, performance budgets and public compatibility? | Bypassing a service boundary or introducing a synchronous call on a latency-sensitive path. |
Ask the assistant to identify assumptions and alternatives, but verify them independently. A useful follow-up is: "List the cases this implementation does not handle, the invariants it relies on, and the smallest tests that would falsify those assumptions."
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest behavior, not the assistant’s confidence
Add or improve tests for the intended behavior and the boundaries most likely to fail. Existing tests show what the project already protects; they do not automatically cover a new rule. Keep a generated test only when its assertions express a real requirement rather than mirroring the implementation.
A layered verification approach
- Fast checks: formatters, type checks, linters and focused unit tests catch inexpensive mistakes while the change is still small.
- Component and integration tests: exercise serialization, storage, queues, network boundaries and authorization interactions that a unit test may mock away.
- Regression tests: reproduce the original defect or requirement so it cannot silently return.
- Static and dependency analysis: use the project’s established scanners and advisory checks. Inspect new packages and transitive dependencies rather than accepting an automated green result blindly.
- Security-oriented checks: for suitable risk levels, use threat modeling, secret detection, web-application scanning, black-box or structural tests, and fuzzing. NISTIR 8397 lists these as verification techniques to select according to the system and change; it does not require every technique for every edit.
- Manual exploratory review: exercise misuse cases, authorization boundaries, unusual data sizes, failure recovery and operational behavior.
When a test fails, do not ask the assistant to keep changing code until the suite is green without understanding the failure. First determine whether the test, requirement or implementation is wrong. Then make one focused correction and rerun the relevant checks.
Example: asking for tests without outsourcing judgment
For a rate limiter, provide the algorithm’s contract: the time window, key identity, boundary behavior, clock source, concurrency expectation and response when the limit is exceeded. Ask for a test matrix covering the first request, the limit, the first request after expiry, independent users and concurrent calls. Review whether the tests actually control time and whether they would pass for an incorrectly shared counter. The assistant can generate cases; the team decides which cases represent the product’s contract.
Apply security and data guardrails
Handle AI-assisted code with the same security expectations as human-written code. Do not send sensitive, personal, classified or otherwise restricted information to an assistant unless your organization’s policy explicitly approves that use. Use redacted fixtures and synthetic identifiers when possible, and understand retention, access and training settings for the selected service before sharing repository content.
Use approved tools where your organization requires an allowlist. Check suggested dependencies, code patterns and licenses. A generated snippet is not exempt from secure coding standards because a model produced it. Preserve branch protections, required checks and least-privilege access for the repository and deployment environment.

The UK Home Office Engineering Guidance and Standards document SEGAS-00020, last updated 20 March 2026, illustrates one organization’s policy. It states: "AI‑assisted outputs MUST be reviewed and approved by a human before reaching production" and says that all AI-assisted changes must be tested under existing engineering standards before being merged or deployed. Those are the Home Office’s rules, not a universal legal requirement, but they make the desired accountability explicit.
Use autonomous coding agents more cautiously than inline completion
An inline suggestion usually proposes a few lines in the editor. An autonomous agent may inspect a repository, edit several files, run commands, open a pull request or modify dependencies. More capability means a larger failure radius, so give the agent a narrower workspace and stronger checkpoints.
Controls for an agent session
- Run it on a separate branch or disposable workspace with the minimum repository and environment permissions.
- Disable production credentials and unrelated tools; provide read-only access unless a write operation is essential.
- Set explicit file, command, time and network boundaries where the platform supports them.
- Preserve branch protections and required status checks. Never allow an agent to bypass mandatory review.
- Inspect the session transcript, commands, generated diff and dependency changes.
- Re-run tests and security checks independently of the agent’s own report.
- Require a human to approve the pull request before merge.
GitHub documents product-specific controls for its cloud agent: generated code is checked with CodeQL, newly introduced dependencies are checked against the GitHub Advisory Database for malware advisories and high- or critical-severity CVSS vulnerabilities, and secret scanning is enabled by default. GitHub also states that draft pull requests still require human review before merging. These controls can change and should be verified against the current product documentation; they do not replace your organization’s own checks.

AI assistance should fit the existing development record rather than create a parallel approval system. In a pull request, describe the intended behavior, files changed, tests run, security checks, dependency decisions and any remaining uncertainty. If policy requires disclosure of AI assistance, include it in the commit or pull-request description using the organization’s prescribed wording.
Reviewers should be able to see what was generated, what the author changed, and how the result was validated. That does not require preserving every discarded prompt; it does require enough information to reproduce the reasoning behind a risky decision. For a security-sensitive change, retain the threat model, test evidence and approval from the responsible owner.

Repetitive implementation
Give the assistant one established neighboring example and ask it to produce the analogous code without changing the interface. Compare the diff for copied bugs, inconsistent validation and accidental behavior changes. Generate the repetitive portion only after deciding the abstraction and error semantics yourself.

Explanation and onboarding
Ask for a map of symbols, inputs, outputs and side effects, then verify each point against the code and authoritative API documentation. Use the explanation as a reading aid, not as a substitute for reading. Mark uncertain statements and resolve them before relying on the summary in a design decision.
Debugging
Provide a minimal reproduction, exact error, relevant versions and the last known-good behavior. Ask for several hypotheses ranked by evidence and a diagnostic test for each. Change one variable at a time. This prevents a plausible but unrelated rewrite from hiding the original fault.
Small refactoring
State that observable behavior, public signatures and performance must remain unchanged, and identify the code smell to address. Request a mechanical patch, run regression tests and compare important metrics or traces if the code is performance-sensitive. Reject a refactor that introduces a new framework or abstraction merely because the generated code looks cleaner.
Security-sensitive code
Use the assistant for checklists, threat-model questions and test ideas, but require an experienced owner to design and review the control. Verify cryptographic, identity and authorization behavior against approved standards and implementation documentation. Do not accept a generated security primitive or policy rule without that independent verification.
When the output is wrong or the workflow stalls
The assistant keeps changing unrelated files
Reset to the last trusted revision, narrow the file and symbol list, and request a patch rather than a rewrite. Add a non-goal such as "do not modify configuration, dependencies or public interfaces."
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The code passes existing tests but feels unsafe
Identify the untested invariant, write a failing test or review checklist for it, and inspect trust boundaries, error paths and data exposure. Existing tests can confirm compatibility while missing a new security or privacy failure.
Best Value
The assistant proposes a new dependency
Ask what requirement makes it necessary and whether the standard library or an existing project utility is sufficient. Check maintenance status, license, transitive dependencies and advisories under your normal process. Keep the dependency out unless the review establishes a clear benefit.
The explanation conflicts with the implementation
Trust the executable behavior and documentation over the explanation. Ask the assistant to point to exact lines, then verify those lines yourself. Correct the code or the comment so the repository does not preserve a persuasive falsehood.
Tests are flaky after the change
Determine whether the assistant introduced timing, ordering, shared-state or network assumptions. Make the test deterministic with controlled clocks, fixtures and isolation; do not simply add retries that conceal a race.

No single product comparison is established by the evidence here. Evaluate an assistant against the way your team works:
- Task support: completion, repository chat, test drafting, debugging and controlled agent actions.
- Context quality: how precisely it can use selected files, symbols, versions and project conventions.
- IDE and review integration: whether changes remain visible in normal diffs, pull requests and approval flows.
- Language and framework coverage: support for the versions your code actually uses.
- Security and data controls: retention, training use, access management, secret handling and administrative policies.
- Permissions: repository, network, command and deployment boundaries for autonomous features.
- Availability and cost: current regional, organizational and plan limits verified from the vendor, without assuming that a free or paid tier has the controls you need.
Run a small internal evaluation using representative, non-sensitive tasks. Score whether the assistant reduced bounded effort without increasing review time, defects, security findings or maintenance burden. Do not convert an informal trial into a universal productivity percentage.
A release checklist for AI-assisted changes
- The task had a named owner and a bounded scope.
- Relevant files, versions, conventions, requirements and non-goals were supplied without restricted data.
- The diff contains no unexplained edits, permissions, configuration changes or dependencies.
- The author understands the control flow, assumptions, failure modes and operational impact.
- Tests cover normal behavior, boundaries, invalid input and the original defect when applicable.
- Project linting, type checks, static analysis, secret checks and dependency checks were run as appropriate to the risk.
- Security-sensitive changes received the additional threat modeling or specialist review they require.
- Normal peer review, branch protection and human approval remain in place.
- The pull request records validation, limitations and AI assistance where policy requires traceability.
The practical standard to keep
Use AI to accelerate bounded work while making the engineering loop more explicit. Context and acceptance criteria constrain the request; a small diff makes inspection possible; understanding prevents confident mistakes; tests and security checks provide evidence; and human review owns the release decision. The assistant may draft code quickly, but the team still decides what the system must do, whether the change fits, and whether the evidence is strong enough to ship.
