How to use AI coding agents to build a website that matches your design

The reliable way to make an AI coding agent follow a website design is to give it structured design context, a narrowly defined implementation target, and an existing codebase it can inspect—then compare the running page with the reference and correct concrete differences. A screenshot alone can show appearance, but a connected design workflow can expose frames, components, layout data, variables, and tokens. The agent still writes and adapts the code; the design tool does not produce a finished, automatically correct website.

This guide uses Figma’s documented MCP workflow as the example because its server is designed to pass design context to supported coding agents. The same operating principles apply to other design-to-code handoffs: define the screen and route, provide project conventions, implement in small slices, and review rendered states at matching viewport sizes.

What an AI coding agent can—and cannot—do

An AI coding agent can inspect a project, create or modify components, write styles, connect routes, and run the application. When it receives structured design context, it can also work from the selected frame’s hierarchy, layout information, components, variables, and tokens instead of guessing from a flat image.

Figma describes its MCP server as a bridge between Figma and an IDE. The server supplies structured design input and a code starting point; the coding agent adapts that input to the prompt and the codebase. Figma’s documentation is explicit that MCP is not a one-click “design to perfect code” system and does not automatically repair problems. See Figma’s explanation of MCP and agent responsibilities.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

That division of responsibility determines the workflow:

  • Figma or another design source supplies the reference structure and visual values.
  • The MCP connection makes selected design information available to the agent.
  • The coding agent decides how to implement the page in your framework and repository.
  • You or your team validate the rendered result and specify the next corrections.

There is no published success rate or benchmark proving that this process produces pixel-perfect results. Figma says outcomes depend on context quality, model behavior, and prompt clarity, so treat visual matching as an iterative engineering task rather than a single generation step.

Prepare the implementation target before connecting anything

Agents perform better when the request identifies one concrete screen, route, and state. “Rebuild our whole product from this file” leaves too many decisions unresolved. Gather the following information first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Name the exact design source

Record the Figma file, page, frame, and any variant or state that matters. A frame for a logged-out desktop landing page is a different target from the logged-in mobile dashboard in the same file. If the design contains several similar frames, choose one as the source of truth for the first pass.

Define the implementation location

State the URL or route to build, whether the route already exists, and whether the work belongs in a new application or an established repository. Tell the agent the framework, styling approach, and component directories used by the project. For example, specify the React route, the existing layout component, and the folder where shared buttons live rather than allowing a new parallel system.

List required states and behavior

Design files often show only one state. Write down the states the website must support: loading, empty, error, signed-in, hover, focus, open navigation, validation failure, or a different viewport. Also identify interactions such as a menu toggle, tab switch, form submission, or modal. A visual frame alone does not define that behavior.

Inventory constraints and available assets

Tell the agent which fonts, icon set, image files, content, localization rules, accessibility requirements, and browser support targets already exist. If an asset is unavailable, say whether a temporary substitute is acceptable. This prevents the agent from silently replacing a project asset or introducing a new dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect a supported coding agent to Figma

Figma recommends its remote MCP server for most users. The remote service connects to hosted Figma files without requiring the desktop application and exposes the broadest set of documented features. Follow the setup instructions for your specific client because available tools and configuration screens vary. Start with the official remote-server installation guide and Figma’s getting-started instructions.

If you use Codex, use the client-specific Codex and Figma setup guide. For another agent, use that client’s documented MCP configuration and check which Figma tools it supports before writing prompts.

Verify the connection with a small request

  1. Open the project in your coding-agent client and confirm the MCP server is enabled.
  2. Open the Figma file and select the exact frame you intend to build.
  3. Ask the agent to inspect the selected frame and report its structure without changing files.
  4. Check that the response identifies the expected frame, major sections, components, and relevant variables.
  5. Only after the inspection looks correct, authorize implementation work.

This read-first check catches a wrong file, page, selection, or permission problem before the agent creates code around the wrong reference.

Give the agent design-system and codebase context

Structured design data is useful only when the agent can map it to the project’s conventions. Ask it to inspect existing components, tokens, variables, routes, and layout primitives before creating replacements. Figma’s tools documentation says the generated framework can be specified in the prompt, so name the actual framework and component conventions instead of leaving them implicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use existing components where they already match

Tell the agent to search for an existing button, input, card, navigation, spacing token, or typography component before adding a new one. Reusing the project’s primitives keeps the new page consistent and reduces the number of independent values that must be corrected later.

Use Code Connect when it is configured

Code Connect maps Figma components to code components. Where those mappings exist, instruct the agent to use them rather than translating every component into a one-off implementation. Figma identifies Code Connect as a way to improve reuse of existing code components. Read the relevant guidance in the MCP server documentation and the tools and prompts reference.

Expose variables and tokens deliberately

Ask the agent to use the project’s color, type, spacing, radius, elevation, and breakpoint tokens when they exist. If the design has a value that is not represented in code, have the agent identify that gap and add the smallest compatible token or local value. Do not ask it to “make it look close” while withholding the naming conventions it is expected to follow.

Let large files be explored in stages

Large Figma files can contain hundreds of screens and variants. Figma documents using metadata to explore a large design before requesting detailed context. Start with the file’s structure, narrow to the relevant page, and then request detailed context for the selected frame. This reduces the chance that the agent focuses on an unrelated screen.

Write a scoped implementation prompt

A strong prompt makes the target, constraints, and review criteria explicit. Include the following elements in one request:

  • Source: the file, page, frame, and state to inspect.
  • Target: the route, entry point, and framework.
  • Repository rules: component directories, token files, naming patterns, and commands used to run or test the project.
  • Behavior: interactions and states that must work beyond the reference frame.
  • Responsive scope: the desktop and mobile widths or breakpoints that need implementation.
  • Asset policy: which supplied assets to use and what to do when an asset is missing.
  • Process: inspect first, propose a component plan, implement in small steps, and show the changed files.
  • Validation: run the app, capture the target route, and report any unresolved visual or functional differences.

A practical prompt can be written like this:

Inspect the selected Figma frame before editing files. Build the /account route in the existing React application. Reuse components and tokens from src/components and src/styles; do not create a second design system. Implement the desktop and mobile states shown in the design, including the open navigation interaction. Use the supplied assets and existing font setup. First describe the frame structure and the files you plan to change, then implement the page. Run the project, check the route at the reference viewport sizes, and list any differences that still need correction.

The example uses ordinary text rather than a magic command. Its value is that it removes ambiguity about scope, reuse, responsive behavior, and the order of work.

Implement in slices instead of generating the whole product

Ask the agent to build a page in structural slices. A useful order is:

  1. Page shell: route, global background, container width, header, and primary layout regions.
  2. Major sections: hero, content columns, cards, forms, footer, or other large blocks visible in the frame.
  3. Design primitives: typography hierarchy, buttons, inputs, icons, borders, radii, and elevation.
  4. Content and assets: exact copy, imagery, logos, and meaningful alternative text.
  5. Behavior: menus, tabs, validation, focus states, and other interactions.
  6. Responsive rules: stacking, hiding, resizing, reordering, and touch-target changes at the required widths.

After each slice, have the agent run the application or its checks. Small changes make it easier to identify whether a mismatch came from layout, styling, content, or behavior. They also reduce the risk of an agent rewriting a working component while attempting an unrelated correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for a component plan before code when the page is complex

For a multi-section page, require a short plan naming the route component, child components, data structures, and reused primitives. Review that plan for unnecessary duplication before allowing implementation. This is a practical safeguard: the agent adapts output to the repository and prompt, but it will not reliably infer a team’s unwritten architecture.

Run the page and compare it with the reference

Visual fidelity is established by comparing the rendered implementation with the design at the same dimensions and state. Figma’s get_screenshot capability can provide a screenshot of a selected design frame. Its code-to-canvas documentation also describes capturing a live interface into editable frames so structural decisions can be reviewed and sent back to the agent. See the code-to-canvas guide.

  1. Start the project with its documented development command.
  2. Open the exact route, not only the homepage.
  3. Set the browser viewport to the reference frame’s dimensions or the closest documented target.
  4. Use the same content, state, and interaction condition as the design.
  5. Capture the implementation and compare structure before fine styling.
  6. Record differences as specific, testable corrections.

Compare in a consistent order

  1. Structure: missing sections, incorrect order, wrong container boundaries, or an extra wrapper.
  2. Geometry: widths, heights, gaps, alignment, cropping, and vertical rhythm.
  3. Typography: font family, weight, size, line height, tracking, and wrapping.
  4. Color and effects: fills, borders, shadows, opacity, and gradients.
  5. Assets: image source, aspect ratio, icon shape, and alternative text.
  6. Behavior: focus, hover, open and closed states, validation, and keyboard operation.
  7. Responsive behavior: what changes at each required viewport rather than only whether the page technically fits.

Instead of saying “make it more like the design,” send one correction batch such as: “At 1440 px, the content container is 80 px too wide; the heading wraps one line earlier; the card gap should match the spacing token; and the mobile navigation should remain hidden until the menu button is activated.” Concrete observations give the agent an actionable next pass.

Handle responsive states and multi-screen flows

A desktop screenshot does not specify how a page behaves on a phone, tablet, keyboard focus, or an error state. Identify those requirements separately and ask the agent to implement them as states, not as afterthoughts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responsive layouts

Provide the reference widths or breakpoint names used by the project. Ask the agent to explain what changes at each width: column count, order, padding, type scale, image crop, navigation mode, and button sizing. Then inspect each required width in the browser. A page that matches one desktop frame can still fail when text wraps, cards stack, or a navigation control becomes inaccessible.

Interaction states

For every interactive component, name the visible states required by the product. Include hover and focus where applicable, plus disabled, loading, success, and error states for controls. If the Figma file contains variants, select or inspect the relevant variant rather than asking the agent to infer behavior from a single static frame.

Flows and routes

Review more than the first screen. Figma’s code-to-canvas guidance describes capturing a single screen or a multi-step flow, allowing structural problems across states to be reviewed together. Capture the routes and transitions a user actually follows, including a deep link into the new page and the return path.

Screenshot-only handoff versus structured design context

A screenshot can still be useful, especially when no design integration is available, but it leaves more decisions to the agent. Use the following comparison to choose the handoff that fits your project.

Comparison axis Screenshot-only handoff Structured Figma context
Layer and layout structure Must be inferred from pixels and visual grouping. Can include selected-frame structure and layout data.
Components and variants Visible appearance is available; component relationships are not guaranteed. Components and related design information can be exposed to the agent.
Variables and tokens Colors, type, and spacing must be measured or guessed unless separately documented. Variables and tokens can be supplied as part of design context when available.
Code reuse Requires separate instructions about existing project components. Code Connect mappings can help associate design components with code components when configured.
Large files Usually requires manually exporting or describing more screens. Metadata can be used to explore a large design before requesting detailed context.
Review loop Requires manual screenshots and written observations. Supports a documented design-to-code and code-to-canvas review loop, but still requires human or team evaluation.
Final implementation The coding agent writes it. The coding agent still writes and adapts it; MCP does not deliver finished code automatically.

These differences do not make structured context a guarantee of fidelity. They indicate where the agent receives information directly and where it must make an assumption.

Common failure modes and precise fixes

The agent builds a generic page

Symptom: The route works, but the layout, typography, or content resembles a template rather than the selected frame.

Fix: Reconfirm the exact file, page, frame, and state. Ask the agent to inspect the selected frame and report its structure before editing. Include the project’s component and token locations, then request changes only for the named route.

It creates duplicate components

Symptom: A new button, card, or spacing system appears even though equivalent primitives already exist.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Ask the agent to search the repository first, list candidate components, and explain why any new component is necessary. If Code Connect mappings are configured, direct it to use those mappings.

The visual match is close at one width but breaks elsewhere

Symptom: Desktop looks acceptable while mobile wraps incorrectly, overflows, or loses the intended hierarchy.

Fix: Name each required viewport and state. Ask for explicit responsive rules, then capture each target width and correct one geometry issue at a time. Do not treat “responsive” as a complete specification.

The agent fixes one mismatch by causing another

Symptom: A spacing correction changes unrelated routes or breaks a shared component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Tell the agent whether the value belongs to a shared token or is local to the new page. Review the proposed file list before applying broad changes, and rerun affected routes after editing shared code.

The agent cannot access the intended design

Symptom: It reports missing context, sees the wrong frame, or returns only a generic answer.

Fix: Check MCP connection status, file permissions, the selected frame, and client-specific tool support. Retry with a smaller frame or metadata request. The setup steps are client-dependent, so follow the relevant remote-server instructions or Codex setup instructions rather than assuming every client exposes identical controls.

The result looks right but behaves incorrectly

Symptom: Static screenshots match, but menus, forms, focus states, or loading and error paths do not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Add behavior and state requirements to the prompt, test them in the running application, and capture each state for review. A visual frame is evidence of appearance, not a complete interaction specification.

Know the limits of the workflow

Figma’s official documentation identifies several boundaries that should shape expectations:

  • The MCP server is a bridge, not a final-code generator.
  • It does not know your team conventions by default; those conventions must be supplied through the repository, mappings, or prompt.
  • It does not automatically repair incorrect output.
  • Results depend on context quality, model behavior, and prompt clarity.
  • The documentation does not claim a pixel-perfect guarantee, measured success rate, time saving, or fidelity percentage.

These limits are not reasons to avoid the workflow. They explain why the highest-leverage work is target selection, context preparation, and a disciplined compare-and-correct loop.

A repeatable checklist for each design-matched page

  • Identify one source file, page, frame, variant, route, and initial state.
  • Record the framework, styling system, component directories, tokens, assets, and run commands.
  • Connect the supported client to Figma’s remote MCP server when that is the appropriate option.
  • Verify access by asking for a read-only structural inspection of the selected frame.
  • Tell the agent to reuse existing components and Code Connect mappings where available.
  • Specify desktop and mobile widths, interactions, accessibility states, and required content.
  • Request a component plan before a complex implementation.
  • Build the shell, sections, primitives, content, behavior, and responsive rules in separate slices.
  • Run the exact route and compare it with the reference at matching dimensions and states.
  • Send concrete corrections for structure, geometry, typography, color, assets, behavior, and responsive changes.
  • Capture related routes and multi-step states, not only the first screen.
  • Record unresolved differences instead of claiming a perfect match that has not been demonstrated.

What a successful handoff looks like

At the end of the process, the agent should have a working route that uses the project’s conventions, reflects the selected design frame, and behaves correctly in the states you specified. You should be able to explain which components and tokens were reused, which values were added, which responsive rules were implemented, and which differences—if any—remain. That evidence is more useful than a claim that an AI tool converted a design automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical formula is straightforward: select a precise frame, provide structured context and repository rules, implement a scoped slice, render it, compare it with the design, and repeat with specific corrections. Figma’s tools can make the context richer, but the coding agent and the review loop remain responsible for the website that reaches production.
