To query Brazilian economic data with AI, use a compatible AI client connected to an MCP server that can call the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) data service suited to your question: SGS for historical series, Focus for market expectations, or PTAX for exchange-rate quotations. The BCB operates the data services; bcb-br-mcp is a third-party implementation, not an official BCB product.
Choose the right BCB source for your question
Selic, IPCA, Focus expectations and exchange rates do not all describe the same kind of data. First decide whether you want an observed historical series, a market expectation, or a currency quotation. Then ask the AI client to use the corresponding tool.

| Source | What it returns | Time reference | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGS | Historical time series, including indicators such as IPCA and the Selic target | Observed values by the series’ stated frequency and date | Exact series definition, frequency, units, and date range |
| Focus | Market expectations, including documented tools for Selic expectations by Copom meeting | An expectation horizon or meeting, not a historical outcome | Expectation reference and horizon; do not treat it as a guaranteed BCB forecast |
| PTAX | Exchange-rate quotations | A quotation for the selected currency and date | Currency, quote side, date, bulletin, and endpoint returned |
The BCB’s electronic services page describes web services for programmatic access, and its statistics area lists IPCA, the Selic target, and SGS time-series layers. For a historical indicator, use the exact SGS series rather than assuming that a name such as “Selic” identifies one unique definition or periodicity.

How the AI and MCP connection works
- Ask a question in an AI client that supports MCP.
- The client selects and calls an available MCP server tool for the data type: SGS, Focus, or PTAX.
- The server queries the relevant BCB interface and returns structured results for the assistant to explain.
- Check the returned dates, units, definitions, and source before relying on the answer.
The bcb-br-mcp project documentation describes tools and resources for SGS series, Focus expectations, and PTAX, as well as local development and an HTTP worker deployment option. Its precise feature set and setup instructions can change. Follow the current instructions for both the project and your chosen AI client; configuration is client-specific.

Query an observed Selic or IPCA series with SGS
For a historical series, make the request specific enough to identify the indicator and period. The project documentation gives example prompts such as “Qual a taxa Selic atual?” and “Mostre o IPCA mês a mês em 2024.” Those examples illustrate natural-language questions; they do not establish that an indicator label alone selects the right series.
- Choose the precise SGS series that matches the intended definition and frequency.
- Set the date range. For monthly IPCA in 2024, specify January through December 2024 and request the monthly series.
- Ask the assistant to return the observation dates, values, units, and series identification alongside its explanation.
- Check that the result is a historical observation and that the frequency and units match your question.
The BCB describes SGS web services as a way to retrieve historical series it publishes. Its working paper also discusses SGS as a time-series management system and gives examples of macroeconomic source attribution, including IPCA and Selic; it is corroboration for the role of SGS, not current API reference documentation. Ask Focus for expectations, not outcomes
Use Focus when the question concerns market expectations rather than what has already happened—for example, an expectation related to a future Copom meeting. The MCP project documents Focus expectation tools, including Selic expectations by meeting. Ask the AI to identify the expectation reference and horizon in its answer, and keep that separate from an observed SGS value.
A market expectation is not a historical result or a forecast guaranteed by the BCB. The specific Focus tools and returned fields described here are those documented by the third-party MCP project; consult current official BCB Focus material for methodology or current expectation values.

Query a currency quotation with PTAX
For an exchange-rate question, specify the currency, date, and whether you need the bid or offer quotation. The MCP project describes a PTAX quotation tool; the BCB open-data catalog also lists daily exchange-rate bulletins and daily U.S. dollar bid and offer rates.
- The BCB catalog says daily bulletin coverage begins on 2 January 2002 for euro data and 28 November 1984 for other currencies.
- The catalog’s U.S. dollar series description distinguishes administered rates through March 1990 from free rates afterward.
- A reference quotation is not necessarily the execution price for a particular transaction.
- Do not assume a quotation is published for every calendar day; the catalog describes daily datasets but does not establish weekend or holiday publication for each series.
See the BCB’s exchange-rate open-data listings and currency datasets for the catalog descriptions.

Natural-language answers are useful for directing a query, but the underlying selection determines what the numbers mean. When asking for data, request the identifying details with the result rather than only a summary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- For SGS: series definition, frequency, units, and date range.
- For Focus: expectation horizon or Copom meeting and the reference attached to the result.
- For PTAX: currency, date, bid or offer side, and bulletin or endpoint context.
The BCB’s services are the source of the data in this workflow. MCP is the integration layer that lets a compatible client call tools; the cited server is maintained as a third-party project and should not be described as built, certified, or endorsed by the BCB.
