Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use an AI agent to help write and debug Selenium tests, while Selenium WebDriver—not the model—executes the browser commands. Keep the agent’s work grounded in the running application: verify locators, run the test, inspect failures, and repeat it before relying on it. A separate pattern is to give an agent a controlled browser tool; that is not automatically a Selenium integration.
What Selenium does—and what the agent does
Selenium WebDriver is a language-neutral API and protocol for controlling browser behavior. A language binding sends commands through the browser’s WebDriver implementation, which communicates with the browser. This gives projects a common interface across supported browsers and platforms. A typical setup includes a Selenium language binding and a browser; Selenium Manager can assist with browser and driver management. Start with Selenium’s WebDriver getting-started guide.
- The agent can inspect a task, propose locators, draft test code, and help interpret real exceptions and logs.
- WebDriver executes the browser actions in the test.
- Your project supplies the installed Selenium version, test framework, application access, and rules for credentials, data, and review.
Selenium IDE is a low-code record-and-playback option; it is useful for learning or authoring simple interactions. WebDriver is the browser automation interface used by code. Selenium Grid distributes sessions across machines and environments. These tools address different parts of the workflow; IDE is not a substitute for Grid, and Grid is not an agent.
Choose the right agent pattern
Use an agent to write Selenium code
This is the most direct way to combine AI with Selenium. The agent drafts or revises a test in your project, then your normal test runner runs it through WebDriver. Give it access to the actual application or a test environment so it can inspect the page rather than infer selectors from convention. Selenium’s AI-agent guide frames this as helping coding agents produce current, correct, less flaky Selenium code.

Give an agent a browser-control tool
In this pattern, an agent observes and acts through a browser tool. Tool availability, execution environment, and permissions depend on the product. OpenAI’s documented computer-use workflow creates a browser session in an OpenAI-hosted environment; Anthropic’s browser-use tool runs automation in the application’s environment. Neither description by itself establishes a Selenium integration. To keep Selenium central, expose a narrowly scoped Selenium workflow or tool to the agent rather than assuming a general browser tool is WebDriver.
Set project rules before asking for code
Place durable instructions in AGENTS.md or the equivalent file your coding agent reads. State the version actually installed in the project; Selenium’s guide illustrates version-specific instructions with Selenium 4.49.0, but that is not a universal version recommendation. Link current documentation and define the project’s conventions.
- Specify the Selenium binding and installed version, the test command, browser target, and supported APIs.
- Require the current WebDriver documentation as the basis for new code. Explicitly reject Selenium 3-or-earlier APIs and legacy or CDP documentation as templates for new work.
- Tell the agent not to hand-download or hard-code driver binaries unless your environment specifically requires it; document the approved driver-management approach.
- Require verified locators from the running application, explicit waits for conditions, and useful failure artifacts.
- Define test data, authentication, domain restrictions, and which actions require a human confirmation.
Instructions prevent common stale-code errors, but they do not validate generated tests. Review and run every change.

Build a reliable agent-assisted test loop
- Open the target feature. Use the agent against the real application or a representative test environment. Ask it to inspect the relevant page and propose candidate locators; check those candidates before it writes the whole test. As Selenium’s project documentation puts it: “An agent that can only write code is guessing about your application. An agent that can open it can check.”
- Generate one focused test. Give the agent the behavior to verify, project rules, relevant page context, and test command. Keep the first change small enough to diagnose.
- Run it yourself. Execute the project’s normal test command. When it fails, provide the actual exception, relevant logs, and a screenshot taken at the failure point. A screenshot may reveal an overlay or banner that a stack trace cannot show.
- Diagnose the unmet condition. Ask what the exception and artifacts show, then make a targeted change. If a wait times out, identify which expected condition remained false rather than adding an arbitrary delay.
- Repeat before trusting it. Run the test several times after it passes. One passing run does not show that timing races are gone.
- Review the diff. Check selectors, waits, driver setup, test data, and side effects before merging or allowing the test to touch valuable data.
Use locators and waits that survive page changes
Verify selectors against the live page
Prefer a stable id or name, then CSS selectors built from stable attributes. Avoid absolute XPath and generated class names that are likely to change with front-end updates. Do not accept a plausible-looking login selector just because it resembles a common form: the agent needs to inspect the actual page, and you need to verify the locator against the running application.

Wait for a condition, not a guessed duration
Use condition-based waits that describe what must become true—for example, an element becoming visible or a result appearing—rather than sleeping for a fixed interval. Fixed sleeps can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Follow Selenium’s waiting-strategies documentation; when a wait expires, troubleshoot the condition, page state, and locator.
Use evidence that narrows the failure
Give the agent the real exception and the relevant surrounding logs, not a generic “it failed.” Selenium documents common failures including NoSuchElementException, StaleElementReferenceException, ElementClickInterceptedException, and SessionNotCreatedException. A failure screenshot adds visual context, such as a banner covering the target. Have the agent connect the observed evidence to a specific change rather than masking the symptom with a longer sleep.
Keep browser access inside a security boundary
Browser content is input, not trusted instruction. Treat page text, DOM data, screenshots, console output, network logs, and actions proposed by the agent as untrusted. Limit the task to necessary domains and permissions, avoid authenticated sessions where they are unnecessary, and require a human to approve consequential actions such as sending, purchasing, deleting, or changing account data.

Scope optional browser capabilities
Anthropic documents four optional browser-use capabilities as disabled by default: JavaScript execution, file upload, console reading, and network reading. They broaden what a tool can do or expose page-controlled data. Its documentation says JavaScript execution runs with page privileges, including access to cookies, storage, and same-origin requests; it recommends enabling this only in sessions without credentials, maintaining domain allowlists, treating results as untrusted, and logging emitted code. See Anthropic’s browser-use documentation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Constrain files and logs
- For uploads, resolve paths—including symlinks and
..—and accept files only from a dedicated allowlisted directory. - For console and network output, redact credential-like values and truncate long entries; URLs and page-controlled logs can contain secrets.
- Use only the credentials and data required for the task, and review browser activity when the tool or environment provides it.
OpenAI’s documented computer-use workflow uses a browser session in an OpenAI-hosted environment, handles access requests and sign-in where needed, waits for the agent turn, verifies the result, reviews saved browser activity, and then deletes the session. This describes that product’s documented workflow, not Selenium. Check current retention, access, and deployment requirements directly before using it with sensitive data: OpenAI computer-use documentation.
Use Grid when execution needs to scale across environments
Selenium Grid is useful when tests need multiple browser and operating-system combinations or execution across machines. Grid capacity depends on the browser/OS coverage, concurrent sessions, machine count, processors, and memory. Selenium’s Grid guide gives around 1 GB of RAM per browser session as a rough expectation, not a guarantee; measure your own workload and isolation needs. Smaller nodes can improve process isolation, and Docker is one way to use smaller nodes. See Selenium Grid documentation.

Choose a Grid layout from measured requirements rather than a universal sizing formula. Consider browser and OS coverage, concurrency, ownership of the environment, credential and test-data handling, debugging visibility, isolation, and operating cost.
Check generated Grid commands
Use Grid 4 syntax. Selenium documents the standalone, hub, and node subcommands; do not copy Grid 3 examples using -role hub or -role node. A basic Grid setup uses a Selenium Server JAR and a browser/driver, with Selenium Manager able to configure drivers when enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOr skip the browser setup
If the task is to capture a website image or PDF rather than interact with an application as a test, ScreenshotNeo is a simpler API option: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. These capabilities do not replace WebDriver for application interaction and test assertions.
Here is a one-request cURL example. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

| Symptom | Likely issue to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
NoSuchElementException |
The locator does not match the live page, the page is not in the expected state, or the element has not appeared. | Inspect the page at failure, verify the locator, and wait for the actual required condition. |
StaleElementReferenceException |
The page updated and the earlier element reference no longer represents the current DOM. | Inspect the transition and locate the element again after the relevant update. |
ElementClickInterceptedException |
An overlay, banner, or other element may be covering the target. | Use the failure screenshot and page state to find the obstruction; do not assume the click simply needs a longer sleep. |
SessionNotCreatedException |
The browser session could not be created; browser, driver, or environment setup is a place to investigate. | Check the actual exception details and project’s browser/driver management configuration. |
| A wait times out | The condition never became true, the locator is wrong, or the application did not reach the expected state. | Record which condition timed out, inspect logs and screenshot, and verify the page state and selector. |

| Test passes once but fails intermittently | A timing race or unstable locator may remain. | Repeat the run, inspect the changing state, and replace fixed sleeps or fragile selectors with verified conditions and stable locators. |
Frequently asked questions
Does Selenium have to be replaced by an AI browser tool?
No. An agent can author or debug Selenium tests while WebDriver continues to execute them. A browser-control product is a separate integration unless it explicitly exposes Selenium.
Should an agent use CDP for browser logs or network events?
Selenium’s guide identifies WebDriver BiDi as the cross-browser W3C standard for these capabilities and describes CDP as Chromium-only, without a stable API across browser versions. It characterizes Selenium’s CDP support as a stopgap; prefer BiDi for new cross-browser work.
Can Selenium IDE distribute tests across machines?
No. IDE is a low-code record-and-playback option; Grid distributes WebDriver sessions across machines and environments.
