To broadcast a prerecorded podcast as a YouTube Live stream, create or schedule a Live event in YouTube Studio, use an encoder or streaming service that plays your finished video file, and enter the event’s stream URL and stream key there. Confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s preview before selecting Go live. The key connects an encoder to YouTube; it does not upload or play the podcast by itself.
What a YouTube stream key does
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” They let an encoder send its live output to the right YouTube destination, but they are not a video file, a media player, or a way to upload a recording. You still need a software encoder, hardware encoder, or cloud service that can play the prerecorded podcast and send it as a live feed. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.

Before you set up the broadcast
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If Live Control Room blocks setup, check the current requirements there; YouTube’s rules and interface may change.
- Choose a playback path. Confirm that your encoder or service can play the finished podcast file, send its audio and video to YouTube Live, and remain running for the entire broadcast. YouTube names the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream function as one hardware option for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer; it is an example, not a requirement. Details are in YouTube’s AJA HELO Plus example.
- Prepare the content and rights. Make sure you have the rights needed for the podcast, including any music, clips, images, or other material in it. A prerecorded format does not remove YouTube’s copyright rules. Check the current copyright safety checklist before broadcasting.
- Plan a test window. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will work.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- To make an event page available in advance, open Manage and schedule a stream. YouTube says a scheduled stream lets viewers get reminders and lets you share the watch page before the broadcast.
- Open the scheduled event or stream in Live Control Room and keep it selected while configuring the encoder. The URL and key must belong to the event you intend to use.
See YouTube’s guidance on scheduling a live stream for the current Studio workflow.

- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the selected event.
- In your encoder, choose its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, put the URL in the server or stream URL field and the key in the stream-key field. Field names differ between encoders.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. If entering the server address manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; YouTube says to reveal or copy it using the lock control beside Stream URL. Do not substitute an ordinary RTMP address if the encoder expects RTMPS.
- Load the podcast file in the encoder’s playback or media-source controls and start sending the feed. A key alone cannot start playback.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that both picture and sound are present, then check stream health and the event’s watch page before your audience arrives.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, select Go live in Live Control Room. At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder.
YouTube’s setup notes cover encoder setup and stream URLs and keys. YouTube recommends RTMPS; if an encoder requires a port setting, its documentation may call for port 443.

- ETHERNET + 5G/4G MOBILE WITH AUTO-FAILOVER – Connect via Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T) or tether a smartphone via USB-C for mobile data, with automatic switchover between connections — ensuring your stream stays on air even if the primary internet connection drops.
- CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.
Test picture, sound, and duration
- Check the whole recording, not just a still frame. Listen for the podcast’s opening audio, transitions, and any quiet sections; watch moving video to catch freezes or stutter.
- Use a quality your upload connection can sustain. YouTube advises matching quality to available upload bandwidth. Codec options depend on your encoder; YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. These are supported codecs, not a promise that every encoder supports each one.
- Allow enough lead time. Start the encoder early enough to verify the incoming preview and resolve issues before clicking Go live. Follow YouTube’s two-hour setup and 15-minute encoder-start recommendations when planning an event.
- Account for archiving. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a guarantee of an archive for longer broadcasts.
Protect the key and reuse it carefully
Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of screenshots, on-screen graphics, recordings, and public instructions. If it may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can open YouTube Studio > Go Live > Stream, reset the key, and replace the old key in the encoder.
YouTube allows custom keys for reuse, which can simplify recurring broadcasts. Reuse does not change the need to select the correct event and protect the credential. YouTube’s getting-started guidance states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; the page does not state a publication year, so check current YouTube guidance before depending on these limits operationally. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or it is using the wrong event URL or key. | Confirm the encoder is actively playing and sending; recopy the URL and key from the intended event and verify the key is in the stream-key field. |
| RTMPS, connection, or SSL error | The entered address may be RTMP rather than the RTMPS URL, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. | Copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room and check encoder support. If the encoder requires it, check whether port 443 is needed. |
| Weak or unstable picture or audio | The selected quality may exceed what the upload connection can sustain, or playback itself may be faulty. | Test the actual moving picture and sound in advance, monitor stream health, and choose a quality appropriate to the available upload connection. |
| Broadcast stops unexpectedly | The encoder or playback source may have stopped sending, or the stream may have exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. | Check whether the encoder is still sending and the file is still playing. YouTube says only streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. |
