How to Use a YouTube Premiere and Livestream for a 24/7 Music Radio Channel

Use a YouTube Premiere for a scheduled, communal launch of a particular music program; use an encoder livestream for the channel’s continuing radio feed. You can redirect viewers from an ended livestream to a Premiere, but a Premiere is not a 24/7 loop. For a continuous YouTube feed without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud; for a do-it-yourself setup, an encoder and careful planning are essential.

What a Premiere does—and what it does not do

A Premiere is a scheduled upload that viewers watch together at a set time. Before it begins, YouTube creates a public watch page where people can share it, set reminders, comment, and chat. Playback starts with a countdown; afterward, the video remains on the channel as a regular upload. YouTube describes Premieres as a way for creators and viewers to “watch and experience a new video together in real time.” YouTube Help: Premiere a new video.

That makes a Premiere useful for a station launch, a new mix, a guest set, a seasonal lineup, or a special recorded program. It is not a continuously repeating radio broadcast. Shorts are not supported as Premieres, and Premiere output above 1080p is not supported. Scheduling at least 24 hours in advance gives viewers around the world an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed; reminder notifications are sent about 30 minutes before the Premiere and at its start time. Option Best fit Trade-offs
StreamNeo, #1 A YouTube channel that wants uploaded videos to keep playing continuously from the cloud. Nothing at home needs to stay on. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card.
Software encoder on a computer A creator with a capable computer who wants to operate the broadcast locally. The computer, power, updates, heat, and local network become operational responsibilities. YouTube supports software encoders but does not endorse a particular setup in its guidance. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Dedicated hardware encoder A purpose-built installation or production workflow where dedicated broadcast hardware makes sense. There may be device cost and compatibility considerations. Check inputs, output formats, monitoring, and recovery before choosing; YouTube does not require a particular model. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
One stream lasting 24 hours or longer An operator who prioritizes one continuous session over a dependable full-length YouTube replay. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams.
Planned shorter sessions plus a local recording An operator who values replay and recovery options. Requires planned transitions and enough recording capacity. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Set up the Premiere first

  1. Upload the finished program. In YouTube Studio, upload the video, set its visibility to Public, schedule its date and time, and select Set as Premiere.
  2. Configure the countdown. Choose the countdown experience available in the Premiere setup. Check the resulting public watch page so the title, thumbnail, timing, and description are ready to share.
  3. Schedule with notice. If advance discovery and reminders matter, schedule at least 24 hours ahead. Viewers can set a reminder on the watch page; YouTube sends notifications roughly 30 minutes before it starts and at start time. YouTube Help: Premiere a new video.
  4. Promote the actual event. Share the Premiere watch page through your channel description, community posts, stream description, and pinned chat. Describe it as a scheduled program, not a 24/7 loop.

Run the radio feed with an encoder

  1. Create or schedule the livestream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream. Schedule it if advance promotion and reminders are useful. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software and hardware encoder options. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Copy the ingest address and stream key. Get the stream URL and key from Live Control Room and enter them in your encoder. The key functions like a password for the stream: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the event.
  3. Select a secure transport if supported. YouTube offers RTMPS, an encrypted RTMP transport. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and configure the encoder with that URL and your stream key. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  4. Match the encoder to your source and YouTube’s settings guidance. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval appropriate to the program and the encoder’s capabilities. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations rather than guessing a universal bitrate: the suitable setting depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec.
  5. Test before the scheduled broadcast. If needed, make a private or unlisted test, preview it in Live Control Room, and verify audio, video, access from the watch page, and mobile playback. Prepare the encoder in advance, leave upload bandwidth headroom, monitor stream quality, and test backup or failover where available. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  6. Start the encoder and confirm the preview. Check that the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room before directing listeners to the stream. Keep monitoring the broadcast and the encoder during operation.

Redirect viewers from the livestream to the Premiere

Live Redirect is a handoff between events: viewers watching the stream can be sent to the selected Premiere when the livestream ends. Set up the Premiere before configuring the redirect.

YouTube currently lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes as eligibility requirements for a creator sending a Live Redirect. Check the current eligibility and interface details in YouTube Help: Redirect your live stream. A practical schedule is to keep the radio feed as the ordinary listening destination and use a Premiere for a special program or launch moment.

Plan around YouTube’s replay and DVR limits

Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete replay of one all-day broadcast. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

DVR allows viewers to pause and rewind during a livestream, but YouTube says it may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If replay and rewind matter, consider planning shorter sessions and keeping a separate local recording. Ending and restarting before the threshold is an operational precaution, not a guarantee against every interruption or platform issue. YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams.

Clear music rights before going live

YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public-performance rights—and other royalty participants. YouTube: Livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

  • Confirm that your permissions cover the actual recording and composition, the relevant territories, and the live broadcast as well as any archived replay.
  • Check that the rights cover applicable public-performance or communication uses and all relevant rights holders.
  • If a rights holder requires allowlisting, confirm that the channel is allowlisted before the event.
  • Keep license records accessible to the people operating the channel. YouTube’s general guidance cannot establish whether a particular station’s contracts cover its intended uses or local legal obligations.
