You can’t turn a YouTube playlist’s Loop button into a livestream: it repeats playback for a viewer, but does not broadcast the videos. To put a playlist on a continuous YouTube live stream, play media you have the rights to use through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder’s output to YouTube. Your computer, OBS, files and internet connection must remain available for a local stream. A cloud service is an alternative if you do not want to run the encoder at home.
What “loop a YouTube playlist live” means
YouTube playlist looping and livestreaming are separate functions. The playlist’s Loop control repeats videos on the watch side; it does not create a live feed. A livestream requires an encoder to send a separate audio-and-video signal to YouTube. For a playlist-based broadcast, the encoder plays and loops authorized media, then transmits that output.
The steps below use OBS Studio and its VLC Video Source. You can instead use a cloud service that supports continuous prerecorded-video streams.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
1. Install OBS Studio and VLC
Install OBS Studio and VLC on the computer that will run the stream. OBS’s VLC Video Source is available on Windows, macOS and Linux, and VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

2. Add your media as a VLC Video Source
- In OBS, create or select a scene.
- In the Sources panel, select +, then choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the video and audio files you are authorized to broadcast to the source’s playlist.
Use media files available to the computer for the entire broadcast. The VLC source can play video and audio items.
3. Configure the loop and playback order
Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist so playback starts over when the listed files finish. OBS documentation lists this option as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default, but check the actual settings. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence, or enable it if you deliberately want randomized playback.
4. Check the scene and audio
Add any titles or graphics you need in OBS, then preview the scene and listen to the audio locally. Confirm that the correct files play and that the playlist restarts as intended. This is a setup check, not a guarantee that the stream will stay uninterrupted.

5. Create an encoder stream and copy its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream configured for encoder software.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into OBS’s stream settings.
YouTube’s setup guidance is available in Get started with live streaming and Configure your encoder settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.

6. Preview, start and verify the broadcast
Check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the intended output on the channel or watch page. YouTube recommends preparing encoders ahead of scheduled events, checking preview and access, and monitoring audio and video quality. Review Live Control Room options such as auto-start, auto-stop and DVR to decide how they should behave for your stream; see Tips for live streaming and Get started with live streaming.
7. Keep the local setup running
For a local OBS broadcast, keep the computer powered on, OBS open, playlist files accessible and internet connection working for as long as the stream should run. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain setup, but do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Plan to monitor the stream and respond if the encoder, computer or connection stops.
Choose between a local encoder and cloud streaming
These are the two practical approaches: run playback and encoding on equipment you control, or use a cloud service configured to send prerecorded video continuously. The comparison describes documented workflows, not reliability or cost testing.

Gyre describes a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streams, and YouTube lists it as a tool for 24/7 livestreaming of prerecorded video in its encoder documentation. That is a vendor description, not an independent reliability assessment; check current features, platform support, storage, limits, costs and terms before choosing any provider.

Rights, copyright and monetization
Use media you are allowed to broadcast
YouTube’s live-stream terms require you to hold the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. Check rights for every video, audio track, image and other element in the playlist. A video being available on YouTube does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt the stream temporarily or terminate it if the material remains. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to avoid interruption. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Check playlist content against Community Guidelines
YouTube applies its Community Guidelines to playlists. It says a playlist may violate the guidelines if the collection, considered as though combined into one video, would violate them. Review YouTube’s playlists policy as well as the rules for individual videos.
Do not assume a looping stream will qualify for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams, and channel-level reused-content rules are separate from copyright clearance. Material repurposed from YouTube or elsewhere without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value may not qualify. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization. A license does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder help does not promise that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete item. If a complete replay matters, plan stream duration and archiving around that limit rather than assuming a 24/7 broadcast will produce one uninterrupted replay.
During operation, monitor audio and video quality and check the stream from the channel page, watch page and mobile devices. For a local setup, also check that OBS remains connected and the playlist continues after it reaches the end.

Troubleshooting a playlist livestream
VLC Video Source is missing in OBS
Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the Sources panel again. The OBS documentation says VLC must be installed for this source to appear.
The playlist stops instead of restarting
Open the VLC Video Source properties and check Loop Playlist. Confirm that the source contains the intended files and that playback reaches the end of its list.
The YouTube preview does not show the OBS output
Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube stream, and that the encoder has been started. Recheck the stream key privately in YouTube Studio; never post it publicly.
The stream is interrupted or replaced
Review YouTube’s copyright notice and identify any matched material. A rights license may not be enough to prevent a live Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Remove or replace material you are not authorized to broadcast, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting where appropriate.
The broadcast goes offline
For a local encoder, check that the computer is powered on, OBS is running, the source files remain available and the internet connection is active. These are operating requirements, not a YouTube uptime guarantee.
