How to Use a Virtual Try-On Kiosk Without Sharing More Data Than Necessary

Pause before activating the camera. Read the kiosk’s consent screen, identify whether it uses a live feed or stores a still image, ask whether it derives facial geometry or other measurements, and check the purpose, retention period, deletion process and third-party access. If those answers are missing or unacceptable, decline and ask whether the store offers a way to compare the product without a camera. That alternative may not exist, but asking prevents you from consenting by default.

Start with a five-minute privacy check

A “virtual try-on kiosk” is a description of an experience, not a single technology. One kiosk may process a live camera feed only long enough to place a frame on your face; another may upload a still image, calculate facial geometry, retain an account-linked record or send the data to a specialist provider. Its appearance does not tell you which flow is operating.

  1. Stop at the consent screen. Do not tap “accept,” “start” or a similar button until you have read the notice or asked for the text in an accessible format.
  2. Identify what is captured. Look for a live video stream, a still photograph, body or face measurements, an image identifier, cookies or other event data.
  3. Identify the purpose. The notice should explain whether processing is only for the try-on, product recommendations, service improvement, analytics, advertising or another use.
  4. Check retention and access. Find the deletion period, how to request deletion, who operates the service and which vendors or other recipients can receive the data.
  5. Choose deliberately. If the explanation is vague or the requested collection is more than you accept, decline. Ask staff whether you can view or compare the item without an image, but do not assume a non-camera option is available.

What the kiosk might do with your image

Live processing without a stored photo

Some systems analyze frames while the camera is active and display the product overlay in real time. A notice may say that frames are processed on the kiosk or device and discarded immediately. “Not saved” should still be read alongside any statement about transmission, logging, crash reports or derived measurements. A live feed can be sent to a server even when the interface never presents a downloadable photograph.

A still image uploaded for processing

Other systems capture a photograph and upload it to a retailer or technology provider. The service may keep the original while the try-on is running, for a stated period afterward, or until you request deletion. Check whether the image is associated with a loyalty account, phone number, email address, session code or receipt. Those links can make an otherwise anonymous picture identifiable.

Geometry, measurements and biometric information

Software can calculate distances and contours—such as the position of eyes, nose and jaw—to fit eyewear or makeup. A notice may call these “facial landmarks,” “face geometry,” “measurements” or “biometric information.” Such data are not necessarily the same as the original photo. Deleting the photo does not automatically prove that calculated geometry, a template, measurement record or event log was deleted too.

Additional technical records

Web-based kiosks and companion apps can create cookies, tracking identifiers, diagnostic logs and timestamps. These records may reveal that a try-on occurred, which products were viewed or which session belonged to a device. Ask whether these records are collected and how long they remain, especially if the screen asks you to scan a QR code or enter contact details.

How to read the consent notice

Look for direct answers to each question below. If a notice uses a broad phrase such as “improve our services,” ask what that means for the image and any derived data.

Question Specific wording to look for Why it matters
What is captured? Live feed, still image, video, measurements, face geometry or biometric information Different data types can have different retention and deletion rules.
Where is it processed? On the kiosk, on your phone, on a retailer server or with a named provider Uploading creates another organization and system that may hold or access the data.
Why is it collected? Try-on only, recommendations, product improvement, analytics, advertising or other purposes A purpose beyond the immediate try-on may require a separate choice or explanation.
How long is it kept? A stated period, deletion trigger and method for requesting deletion “We delete it” is incomplete without saying what is deleted and when.
Who receives it? Retailer, kiosk operator, cloud host, analytics company or other named vendor Third-party handling affects access, contracts and deletion requests.
Can I use it without an image? Manual product selection, a physical sample or another image-free route An alternative lets you compare products without accepting camera processing.

Take a photograph of the notice only if the kiosk and store rules permit it. Otherwise, write down the operator’s name, the stated retention period and the contact method before consenting. A staff member may be able to provide the full privacy notice or explain terms that are difficult to read on the screen.

Questions to ask store staff

Staff may not administer the software, so ask them to identify the kiosk operator or direct you to the responsible privacy contact. Use precise questions rather than asking generally whether the kiosk is “safe.”

  • Does the camera send a live feed anywhere, or is processing done locally?
  • Is a still image saved? If so, what is the automatic deletion time?
  • Does the system create face geometry, measurements, a template or another biometric record?
  • Is the image or derived data connected to my loyalty account, phone number, email address or QR-code session?
  • Which company operates the service, and which providers can access the image or derived data?
  • Is information used to improve the product, train a system, personalize marketing or measure store traffic?
  • How do I request deletion, and does that request cover derived measurements and vendor copies?
  • Can I view the product or compare sizes without turning on the camera?

If nobody can answer, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to activate the camera. You can return later after reviewing the operator’s written notice, but you do not need to provide an image to obtain an explanation.

When deleting a photo is not the whole answer

A 2020 investigation by Canada’s federal, Alberta and British Columbia privacy commissioners illustrates why the wording of a deletion promise matters. The Cadillac Fairview mall-directory case involved inconspicuous cameras at 12 shopping malls and reported images of about five million shoppers. Regulators reported that the images had been deleted while biometric information derived from them remained in a centralized third-party database. The case is historical and does not establish what current kiosks do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Michael McEvoy, British Columbia’s information and privacy commissioner, said in the release about that investigation: “Pictures of individuals were taken and analyzed in a manner that required notice and consent.” The statement addresses that investigation and its legal context, not every retailer or jurisdiction.

When a kiosk says “photos are deleted,” ask whether the promise includes:

  • the original file and any thumbnails or backups;
  • face geometry, measurements, templates or other biometric information;
  • session identifiers, product choices and diagnostic logs;
  • copies held by a service provider or cloud host; and
  • data already combined with an account or analytics record.

If the notice does not distinguish these categories, ask for clarification before consenting. A short retention period for the original image can coexist with longer retention of derived data.

Why the service operator and vendors matter

The retailer may own the kiosk while another company supplies the camera software, cloud processing or virtual overlay. Determine which organization decides why the data is collected and which organizations merely process it. Ask whether a named provider can use the information for its own improvement, security, analytics or advertising.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a 2023 policy announcement, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission highlighted unexpected collection, failure to assess foreseeable harms and weak oversight of vendors and other third parties as biometric-information risks. That announcement is policy guidance, not a finding about the kiosk in front of you. It does explain why a retailer’s vendor controls are relevant to your decision.

Use the narrowest consent available. If the screen offers separate choices for the try-on and optional improvement or marketing, accept only the function you need. If it provides one bundled consent for several purposes, ask whether the optional purposes can be refused.

What available evidence does—and does not—show

A 2024 study of websites and Android apps

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s project page summarizes Concordia University research that analyzed 138 virtual try-on websites and 28 Android apps. The sample was online services, not a census of physical kiosks. Its results are useful warning signs, but they are not prevalence estimates for stores.

Reported result Scope and qualification
65% of websites and 18% of Android apps transmitted user images to servers Percentages from the sampled 138 websites and 28 apps; not a measure of all services or in-store kiosks.
37% of sampled websites used providers that extracted facial geometry Applies to the websites in that study sample.
11% of websites and 25% of virtual try-on providers did not comply with their own privacy policies The project page’s summary of the study; it does not establish retailer-wide noncompliance.
1,446 tracking scripts and 931 cookies Counts found across the analyzed websites, not kiosk-specific totals.

These findings support asking concrete questions about uploads, geometry extraction and tracking. They do not let you infer the data flow of an unnamed kiosk from its screen design or from an app’s behavior.

A retailer notice is specific, not universal

Walmart’s current privacy notice gives a concrete example of why the product category alone is insufficient. For its eyeglass virtual try-on, Walmart says it collects biometric information and deletes it within 48 hours, and says the information is not sold or shared. The same notice describes apparel and makeup workflows differently: apparel information may be used to improve the service, while makeup information may be shared with Perfect Corp. These statements apply to Walmart’s described services and can change; they are not a rule for other retailers or kiosks.

Compare two available options before choosing

If a store offers more than one way to preview a product, compare the actual notices rather than assuming that the simpler-looking option is more private.

Comparison point Lower-exposure wording Questions when wording is unclear
Camera processing Live processing on the kiosk with no transmission stated Are frames sent to a server, even briefly?
Image storage No still image retained; automatic deletion is defined Are thumbnails, backups or vendor copies retained?
Derived data No face geometry or biometric measurement collected What measurements or templates are created?
Recipients Retailer-operated processing with no third-party access stated Who hosts, analyzes or supports the service?
Purpose Strictly to display the selected product Is data used for improvement, analytics or advertising?
Image-free route Manual comparison, physical sample or staff-assisted sizing Is this actually available at this location?

“Lower exposure” is a comparison of stated practices, not a guarantee that a system is risk-free. Favor the option that collects fewer data types, keeps them for less time, names fewer recipients and gives you a usable deletion route.

How to decline, stop or request deletion

Declining before activation

Use the screen’s cancel, back or decline control. If no such control is visible, ask staff to end the session without taking a picture. Do not scan a QR code or enter contact information merely to escape a camera prompt. Ask for the operator’s privacy contact if you want a written explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stopping an active session

Close the session using the kiosk’s exit control and ask staff whether a captured image was created before you stopped. Record the date, location, kiosk identifier and any session number shown on screen. Those details help the operator locate a record without requiring you to provide more personal information.

Requesting deletion

Follow the deletion instructions in the notice. State that you want the original image, derived facial geometry or measurements, identifiers and copies held by processors deleted, if those categories are covered by the applicable policy. Ask for confirmation of what was deleted, what was retained under an exception and the reason for any retention. A response that addresses only the visible photograph may not answer the full request.

Privacy guidance and legal context

A 2012 FTC staff report’s virtual-eyeglass example recommended telling consumers at collection why images are stored, how long they are stored, who can access them and what deletion rights apply. It also recommended express consent before a materially different use. Present that as staff guidance from that report, not as a universal current legal rule. Requirements vary by country, state or province, the retailer’s location and the type of information collected.

The FTC’s 2023 biometric-information policy announcement said, “Today’s policy statement makes clear that companies must comply with the law regardless of the technology they are using.” That principle does not tell you which law governs a particular kiosk, but it reinforces the practical rule: ask what the system does rather than relying on the label “virtual try-on.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting an unclear or broken notice

The notice is too short to explain retention

Ask for the full privacy policy and the specific kiosk operator. If staff cannot provide either, do not activate the camera. A general store privacy page may not describe a specialist provider’s processing, so look for a kiosk-specific section.

The camera starts before you can read the terms

Covering the lens is not a reliable solution because the kiosk may still log a session or show an error. Use the exit control, ask staff to reset the session and request the notice in advance. Do not assume that a blocked live preview means no image was transmitted.

The service requires a phone number or email

Ask why the identifier is necessary and whether a one-time, image-free preview is possible. Do not provide contact details simply to obtain a deletion link unless you understand how that identifier will be used and retained.

The promised deletion period has passed

Contact the operator with the session date, location and any confirmation number. Ask whether backups, derived data, analytics records or vendor copies follow a different schedule. Keep the response for your records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision rule

Use the kiosk only when you can answer four questions in plain language: what is captured, why it is captured, who receives it and when every relevant form of data is deleted. If any answer is missing, decide whether the product preview is worth accepting that uncertainty. Declining is a legitimate privacy choice. Requesting a non-camera way to compare the product is reasonable, but the store may not have one.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
