To keep a home-PC lofi stream online through brief power interruptions, size a UPS for the equipment’s measured streaming load—not the PC’s advertised component wattage or the UPS’s VA number alone. Check both the UPS’s watt and VA limits, consult its runtime chart at your load, and put the PC and modem/router on battery-backed outlets. A UPS can buy time during an outage; it cannot keep the stream live through a long outage, an ISP failure, or a PC or encoder fault.
What size UPS do I need for my PC?
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all capacity for a 24/7 stream. PC power draw varies with its hardware and what it is doing; the modem/router and any other equipment you want to keep powered add to the load. Measure the equipment while the stream is running, then compare the total with both the UPS’s watt and volt-ampere (VA) output ratings.

APC’s buying guide recommends output-watt capacity generally 20–25% above the connected equipment’s draw. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for checking the exact UPS model’s limits and runtime chart: APC UPS Buying Guide.

Measure the load you actually need to protect
- Measure the PC at the wall while it is encoding or streaming, using a suitable power meter or another trustworthy wall-power measurement. CPU and GPU component ratings are not the same as the complete PC’s draw.
- Add the modem and router if they must stay on for the stream to reconnect or continue sending data.
- Include external storage or a monitor only if it needs battery power. A monitor may be unnecessary during an unattended outage.
Choose a target, then check runtime
Decide whether you need to ride through brief flickers, sustain a short interruption, or keep the computer up long enough to shut down cleanly. Use the selected UPS model’s runtime chart at the measured load. Runtime depends on load and battery condition; VA capacity by itself does not tell you how long the UPS will run. APC notes that more equipment connected to the UPS means less runtime.

A compact desktop UPS should not be assumed to power a continuous broadcast through an extended outage. If a particular minimum duration matters, verify that duration against the model’s runtime data at your full planned load.
How to connect a UPS to your streaming setup
- List and measure the loads. Measure the PC during the stream and decide whether the modem/router, monitor, and storage need backup. Add the loads that must operate together.
- Check both capacity ratings. Confirm the total is within both the UPS’s watt and VA output limits. Apply APC’s general 20–25% watt-headroom recommendation, then check the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation.
- Verify compatibility and outlets. Check the number and type of battery-backed outlets, plug and voltage for your location, output waveform, monitoring connections, and operating-system support for shutdown software. APC describes pure sine-wave output as offering the highest degree of compatibility for active-PFC servers and sensitive electronics; check your PC power supply and the UPS documentation.
- Connect only essential equipment to battery outlets. Put the PC and modem/router on battery-backed outlets if both must remain powered. Add the monitor or peripherals only if needed and if runtime allows. Use surge-only outlets for noncritical equipment where the UPS provides them; APC says this helps preserve battery power for primary equipment.
- Follow the UPS setup instructions. Follow its manual for initial charging, placement, ventilation, grounding, and load limits. Do not put a laser printer, heater, or other high-draw device on battery backup without checking the UPS capacity and instructions.
- Configure monitoring and shutdown. Install management software supported by the UPS and your operating system. Set a low-battery or runtime-triggered graceful shutdown with enough time for the operating system and streaming software to close. Decide how you will restart the stream after power returns; menus and capabilities vary by UPS model and OS.
- Rehearse the full setup safely. During stable conditions, save your work and perform a brief, controlled interruption as the UPS manual allows. Check that the PC and modem/router stay powered, that you understand the encoder’s reconnect behavior, and that monitoring alerts and shutdown work. Avoid repeatedly deep-discharging the battery for tests.
Will a UPS keep my YouTube stream live during a power outage?
Only if the interruption is within the UPS’s available runtime and the rest of the connection remains functional. The UPS can power equipment connected to its battery outlets; it does not supply electricity to the home indefinitely or repair an internet connection. A powered modem and router cannot overcome an ISP outage.

YouTube says network disruption can break a live stream and recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. That is an internet-capacity margin, not extra power backup. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For a lofi broadcast, test the encoder setup and recovery behavior before relying on it unattended, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s guidance on streaming includes testing the setup and failover: YouTube streaming tips. A UPS addresses one failure mode—loss of power to connected equipment—not network, encoder, or platform interruptions.

What to compare when choosing a UPS
Compare candidate models against the same measured load and your intended ride-through or shutdown time. No single model can be recommended without knowing the PC, peripherals, region, and outage-duration goal.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Watt and VA output limits | The UPS must support the load within both ratings. |
| Runtime at your measured load | Runtime varies with load and battery condition; check the exact model’s chart. |
| Waveform and PC power-supply compatibility | Confirm compatibility in the UPS and PC power-supply documentation; APC identifies pure sine-wave output as the highest-compatibility option for active-PFC servers and sensitive electronics. |
| Battery-backed versus surge-only outlets | Reserve battery outlets for the PC and network equipment that must stay on. |
| USB or network monitoring and shutdown support | Verify the exact UPS model and your operating system support monitoring and orderly shutdown. |
| Battery replacement, warranty, local plug and voltage | Check availability of the correct replacement battery and suitability for your electrical system. |
| Noise and placement | Make sure the UPS can be placed and operated appropriately near your equipment. |
Maintenance and common problems
Runtime is shorter than expected
Check the connected load and compare it with the exact model’s runtime chart. Remove nonessential devices from battery outlets and review battery condition. APC says most of its VRLA UPS batteries should last three to five years, depending on temperature, discharge history, and load; this is APC guidance, not a lifespan guarantee for every UPS battery. See APC’s battery-life guidance.

The PC stays on, but the stream drops
Check whether the modem/router is also on battery power, then distinguish a local power problem from a network disruption. A UPS cannot prevent an ISP outage. Check YouTube stream health and encoder reconnect behavior, and make sure upload capacity has the recommended headroom above the total stream bitrate.

Follow the UPS manual and check the exact model’s compatible replacement cartridge. APC’s battery selector can help identify a model-specific replacement: APC battery replacement selector. APC advises against frequent runtime calibration, recommending one or two per year at most if calibration is necessary. Keep vents clear, stay within the maker’s environmental range, and check runtime estimates and battery alerts periodically.
