A teleconverter can give a compatible telephoto lens more reach, but it is not a universal spacer: the exact lens, converter, and camera-body combination determines whether it will mount and which features will work. Before buying or attaching one, check the manufacturer’s compatibility chart and the manuals for your specific equipment.
Check compatibility before attaching a converter
A teleconverter fits between a lens and camera body and magnifies the image, increasing the lens’s apparent focal length. Nikon describes it as a way to get a greater telephoto effect from a lens, but compatibility is model-specific—not guaranteed just because the mount appears to fit.

- Identify your equipment: note the exact camera body, lens model, lens mount, and converter model.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility chart: find the exact lens and converter combination. Read the lens and converter manuals for mounting requirements and any autofocus, metering, stabilization, or other restrictions.
- Confirm body support: a combination may physically mount yet have limits on autofocus or other functions. For example, Nikon’s F-mount compatibility chart specifies body support restrictions for some autofocus combinations, while Nikon’s Z guidance describes different f/8 and f/11 autofocus behavior. Those Nikon examples do not establish compatibility for other brands or systems.
For Nikon F-mount lenses, use Nikon’s AF-S Teleconverter Compatibility chart. For Nikon Z equipment, consult Nikon’s Z teleconverter guidance and the manuals for the exact lens, converter, and body.

Multiply the lens’s focal length by the converter factor. The converter also reduces the maximum aperture, costing light: Nikon’s general guide gives approximately one stop for 1.4x, 1.5 stops for 1.7x, and two stops for 2x converters. Its Z-system guidance gives one stop for the Z 1.4x and two stops for the Z 2.0x.

| Converter factor | Focal-length effect | Light loss |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4x | 400mm becomes 560mm | About one stop |
| 1.7x | Multiplies focal length by 1.7 | About 1.5 stops |
| 2x | 400mm becomes 800mm | About two stops |
The focal-length examples are arithmetic, not a promise of equivalent framing or image quality. For a more specific Nikon example, Nikon shows a compatible 70–200mm f/2.8 paired with a 2x converter becoming a 140–400mm range; the maximum aperture is reduced by two stops. The less powerful 1.4x option gives less reach but costs less light than a 2x. Nikon’s figures are manufacturer guidance, not independent performance tests. See Nikon’s general guide to using teleconverters.
Mount and remove it according to the manual
There is no single safe attachment sequence for every camera system. Follow the exact converter and lens manuals for mounting and removal. Handle the equipment carefully, avoid touching optical surfaces, and confirm that the parts are seated and locked as directed before shooting.

- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Recheck exposure and autofocus
Because the converter reduces the maximum aperture, the camera receives less light. Depending on the scene and your exposure priorities, you may need a slower shutter speed, a higher ISO, or both. A slower shutter speed can make camera or subject movement more visible, so consider whether the new reach is useful under the available light.

Autofocus behavior depends on the exact lens-body-converter combination and the resulting effective aperture. Nikon’s F-mount chart lists f/8 support limitations for certain combinations. Nikon’s Z guidance says autofocus points may be available at f/8 or f/11 on compatible equipment, while cautioning that autofocus accuracy and speed vary. Do not assume that support applies to your own gear: verify it in the relevant compatibility documentation and check focus acquisition on your actual setup before relying on it for an important shoot.

Evaluate image quality against your needs
A converter magnifies the image formed by the lens, so it can also make existing optical defects more apparent. Nikon notes possible sharpness loss; its guidance and Nikon UK’s quick guide to using teleconverters describe optical trade-offs. Do not assume a converter will match a dedicated longer lens: the result depends on the equipment and conditions.
To decide whether the trade-off works for your photography, make a comparison frame with and without the converter at the same subject distance. Compare detail, focus acquisition, and the shutter speed needed for a usable exposure. This is a practical check you can perform with your own gear, not a universal performance result.

- 2x telephoto lens converter: For smartphones with a built in 5x telephoto camera, this converter doubles optical zoom from 5x (120 mm equivalent) to 10x (240 mm equivalent) for distant shooting without digital cropping or image loss
- For 5X telephoto cameras only: Not for main camera; cell phone accessories compatible with Vivo X200 Ultra Xiaomi 15 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S26 S25 Ultra Android iPhone 18 Pro Max 18 Pro 17 16 Pro/Pro Max; select 5X before use if optical zoom is below 5X
- Compact and lightweight: Compared to standard external zoom lenses, this 2x converter is shorter and lighter; it features a 17mm thread for 17mm threaded phone cages, cases, and lens clips; content creator essential photography and filming accessories
- Multicoated optical glass: 7 elements in 5 groups of HD optical glass and multiple nanocoatings reduce glare and distortion, resist water, fingerprints, and scratches, and ensure excellent light transmission; a cleaning cloth is included
- Important note: Different phone brands may require different zoom levels to activate the telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, apply the included stickers to cover the wide angle lens to prevent lens switching caused by light sensor interference
When a teleconverter makes sense
- Consider one when: your exact equipment is listed as compatible, you need extra reach, and the light loss and autofocus behavior are acceptable for the subject.
- Consider a longer dedicated lens when: the converter’s aperture loss, focusing limits, or image-quality trade-offs do not suit the conditions. The outcome will differ by lens and system; no universal quality comparison applies.
- Weigh size and cost as well as reach: Nikon describes its converters as smaller and more cost-effective than some super-telephoto options, but that is not a guarantee that a converter is the better choice for every photographer or budget.
Some benefits are system-specific. Nikon says compatible Z converters maintain minimum focusing distance as well as autofocus and VR functionality. Treat that as Nikon Z guidance for supported combinations, not as a general promise for other mounts or lenses.
