A Surface Pro changes from a tablet into a laptop-style computer through its physical setup: close the kickstand and use the touchscreen for tablet work; open the kickstand and attach a compatible detachable keyboard for laptop-style typing. There is no single universal Windows switch that creates both modes. The keyboard, kickstand, touch keyboard and optional pen each determine how the device feels in use.
Understand the two physical setups
The Surface Pro is a full Windows computer with a touchscreen, built-in kickstand and detachable keyboard support. Its most useful distinction is not a separate operating-system mode but the way you position and connect the hardware.

- Tablet setup: close the kickstand, hold or lay the display flat, and interact with Windows by touch. A keyboard is optional.
- Laptop setup: open the kickstand, place the device on a stable surface, and attach a compatible keyboard to the lower edge. The keyboard connects magnetically on supported models.
- Writing and drawing setup: use a lower kickstand angle, sometimes called Studio Mode on Surface Pro 6, with a compatible Surface Pen if handwriting or sketching is important.
The exact keyboard and pen that work depend on the Surface Pro generation. Check the model before buying an accessory; “Surface Pro keyboard” does not describe one universal product.
Use your Surface Pro as a tablet
1. Close the kickstand
Fold the built-in kickstand closed against the rear of the device. You can then hold the Surface Pro with both hands, rest it on a table, or place it in a stand that supports its size. Closing the kickstand removes the laptop-style support and makes touch interaction the primary way to work.

2. Fold an attached Type Cover behind the display
If a Type Cover is still connected, fold it behind the screen. Microsoft’s instruction is to “Fold the Type Cover back behind the screen to use your Surface as a tablet.” In that position, the cover does not register key presses, so your hands will not accidentally type while you hold the device.
3. Open the touch keyboard when you need to type
Tap a text-entry area, such as a document, search box or address field. Windows should present its on-screen keyboard. Tap the required keys on the display, then dismiss or minimize the touch keyboard when you return to reading, scrolling or drawing.
If the touch keyboard does not appear, first tap directly inside a field that accepts text rather than an ordinary label or button. Also check that the physical cover is folded fully behind the screen and that it is not being used as a normal keyboard. The exact touch-keyboard controls can vary with your Windows version, but the basic workflow is the same: select a text field, then type on screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Use touch gestures deliberately
Touch is most useful when the screen is close to you and the task involves reading, browsing, selecting, scrolling or annotating. Keep one finger available for scrolling and use a second finger when an application supports pinch-to-zoom or other multi-touch actions. For long typing sessions, reconnect a compatible keyboard instead of treating the on-screen keyboard as a full replacement for physical keys.
Turn the Surface Pro into a laptop
1. Place it on a stable surface
Set the lower edge of the Surface Pro near the front of a desk or table. A hard, level surface makes the kickstand easier to adjust and keeps the display from sliding while you type. The kickstand can also support different viewing positions, but the best angle depends on your desk height, chair, lap and posture.
2. Open the built-in kickstand
Pull the kickstand out from the rear and set the screen at a comfortable viewing angle. Microsoft describes Surface Pro 6 as becoming “Laptop Mode” when you open the built-in kickstand and add a removable Surface Pro Signature Type Cover. The same physical principle applies to other generations that support their own compatible keyboards.

3. Attach the correct keyboard
Align the keyboard’s magnetic connector with the lower edge of the Surface Pro. A supported cover should seat against the device and remain attached while you type. Do not force a cover that does not align, does not stay attached or leaves a gap; those symptoms usually indicate a model mismatch or a damaged connector.
The Tool Desk

Once attached, the cover supplies physical keys and, on models that include one, a trackpad. Windows should accept key presses normally. Adjust the kickstand rather than bending the display or placing pressure on the hinge. If you prefer a higher or lower viewing angle, change the kickstand position before moving the keyboard.
Switch between tablet and laptop use
- From laptop to tablet: save or pause your work, close the kickstand, then fold the attached Type Cover behind the screen. Touch the display directly; the folded cover will not type.
- From tablet to laptop: return the cover to its typing position, open the kickstand, and make sure the magnetic connector is seated along the lower edge.
- When changing locations: detach the keyboard if you are carrying the Surface Pro as a tablet. This reduces the chance of pressing keys or bending the cover in a bag.
- When returning to a desk: reconnect the keyboard before opening a long document or email so you do not have to rely on the touch keyboard.
These steps change the physical controls you use; they do not require a universal “tablet mode” toggle in Windows.
Check keyboard compatibility before you buy
Keyboard compatibility is the most common source of confusion. Microsoft lists different covers for different generations, and a connector that looks similar is not proof that an accessory is supported. Use the exact model name shown in Windows or on the device packaging, then compare it with Microsoft’s current compatibility information before ordering.
| Keyboard family | Models identified as compatible | How it attaches or works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type Cover | Surface Pro 7 and earlier devices | Magnetic attachment; can be folded behind the screen for tablet use | Microsoft says this Type Cover is not compatible with Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8 and later models |
| 13-inch Keyboard | Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 9, Surface Pro 10 for Business, Surface Pro 11th Edition and Surface Pro X | Magnetic attachment to the lower edge | Verify the exact edition before purchase |
| 13-inch Flex Keyboard | Selected Surface Pro 8th Edition-and-later models listed by Microsoft | Can be attached or used detached; recharges when reattached | Detached use requires Windows 11; it is not a universal feature of Surface keyboards |
The compatibility lists can change as Microsoft releases new hardware. Treat the table as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the current model-by-model list. Business editions and consumer editions can have different listings even when their names look similar.

Keep a keyboard attached
This is practical if you move repeatedly between typing and touch. Fold the cover behind the display for tablet use, then return it to the typing position when you need physical keys. Remember that the folded cover is inactive, so it will not accidentally enter text.

Remove the keyboard for a cleaner tablet
Detach the cover when you are reading, drawing or carrying the Surface Pro one-handed. The Surface Pro remains a functioning Windows tablet without a keyboard. You can reconnect the cover whenever you need a physical keyboard.
Use a detachable Flex Keyboard when supported
Microsoft specifically documents detached operation for the 13-inch Flex Keyboard. With Windows 11, you can place that keyboard separately from the display while typing, then reattach it to recharge. Do not assume that a different Type Cover or keyboard can be used detached simply because it also attaches magnetically.
Skip the keyboard when touch is enough
A keyboard is optional. Browsing, reading, media controls, touch-based navigation and many note-taking tasks can be done entirely on the screen. Buy a keyboard for the way you work, not because every Surface Pro requires one.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use a Surface Pen for notes and drawing
A compatible Surface Pen is optional. In tablet setup, it can make handwriting, diagramming and drawing more controlled than using a fingertip. Microsoft describes Surface Pen use for notes and drawing on Surface Pro 6, but pen support and features vary by generation. Confirm that the pen is compatible with your exact Surface Pro before buying it.
For writing, lower the kickstand to a shallow angle so your hand can rest more naturally on the display. This position is often called Studio Mode on Surface Pro 6. It is not guaranteed to feel ideal on every desk, lap or posture, so adjust the angle and work surface to reduce wrist strain.
A pen does not replace a keyboard for sustained text entry, and it is not required to use the Surface Pro as a tablet.

Use a mouse only when it helps
Microsoft lists a Surface Arc Mouse as an optional Surface Pro 6 accessory. A mouse can be useful for pointer-heavy desktop applications, spreadsheets or a desk setup, but it is not needed to switch between tablet and laptop arrangements. The touchscreen and keyboard trackpad can handle the transition without an additional pointer.
Find a comfortable kickstand angle
- Upright desk work: open the kickstand farther so the display faces you while the keyboard remains flat on the desk.
- Low writing angle: use the lower position for pen input and drawing, as Microsoft illustrates with Studio Mode on Surface Pro 6.
- Reading or watching: choose an angle that limits glare and does not require you to support the device with your hands.
- Lap use: test stability before typing for a long period. A kickstand position that works on a desk may feel unstable on a soft or uneven lap.
Never force the kickstand past its intended range or lift the device by the keyboard cover. Move the Surface Pro by supporting the tablet itself.
Typing without a physical keyboard
Tablet use does not prevent text entry. Tap a text field to summon the on-screen keyboard, then use touch to enter short messages, search terms or quick notes. For long documents, code, email sessions or detailed editing, a compatible physical keyboard is usually more efficient and leaves more of the display visible.
If the cover is folded behind the screen, its key presses are intentionally disabled. That is expected behavior, not a fault. Return the cover to its normal position when you want it to type.

Changing from keyboard use to touch use does not create one universal battery figure. Battery life depends on the Surface Pro generation, processor, screen settings, applications, wireless activity and workload.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft reported up to 13.5 hours of video playback for Surface Pro 6. That figure came from an April 2017 test of a preproduction Intel Core i5 model with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, using full battery discharge during video playback. Microsoft also notes that battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors. It is a dated, model-specific laboratory result, not a current expectation for every Surface Pro or for typing, drawing or mixed use.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The Type Cover does not type after I fold it back
That is normal. A Type Cover folded behind the display is designed not to register key presses. Move it back to the typing position and ensure its magnetic edge is seated.
The new keyboard will not attach
Stop and verify the exact Surface Pro model against Microsoft’s compatibility list. In particular, the older Type Cover listing does not include Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8 or later models, while newer 13-inch keyboards target specific newer generations. Clean, undamaged connector surfaces and align the keyboard squarely; never force the magnets.
The touch keyboard does not appear
Tap inside a field that accepts text. If a physical cover is attached, fold it fully behind the display or detach it. Then select the text field again so Windows has a clear reason to display the on-screen keyboard.
The keyboard works attached but not away from the tablet
Detached operation is documented for the 13-inch Flex Keyboard with Windows 11. It should not be expected from every Surface keyboard. Reattach a non-Flex cover to use it, and check that the Flex Keyboard model and Windows requirement match your setup.
The kickstand feels wrong on my lap
Kickstand angles are not one-size-fits-all. Move to a firm surface, adjust the angle, or detach the keyboard and use touch if the device is unstable. Do not promise yourself that a position suited to a desk will behave identically on every lap or posture.
The pen does not work
Confirm pen compatibility for the exact Surface Pro generation before replacing it. A pen is an optional accessory, so the Surface Pro should still function as a touch tablet without one.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the exact Surface Pro generation and edition.
- Check the current Microsoft keyboard compatibility list before purchasing a cover.
- For tablet use, close the kickstand and fold or remove the keyboard.
- Tap a text field to use the on-screen keyboard.
- For laptop use, open the kickstand and attach the compatible keyboard magnetically.
- Use a lower kickstand angle for pen writing or drawing when it feels comfortable.
- Confirm Windows 11 before relying on detached 13-inch Flex Keyboard use.
- Treat battery figures as model- and test-specific rather than universal.
Which setup is best for your task?
| Task | Recommended physical setup | Useful accessory |
|---|---|---|
| Reading, browsing and scrolling | Kickstand closed; touch-first tablet use | None required |
| Long documents and email | Kickstand open with a compatible attached keyboard | Type Cover or newer keyboard matched to the model |
| Handwritten notes and sketches | Lower kickstand angle with the display near a writing surface | Compatible Surface Pen |
| Pointer-heavy desk applications | Kickstand open with a keyboard and trackpad | Optional mouse |
| Typing with the display separated from the keyboard | Only a supported 13-inch Flex Keyboard arrangement | Windows 11 and compatible Flex Keyboard |
Bottom line
To use a Surface Pro as a tablet, close the kickstand, use touch, and fold an attached Type Cover behind the screen or remove it. To use it as a laptop, open the kickstand and attach the keyboard made for your exact Surface Pro generation. A pen and mouse are optional, while detached keyboard typing is a specific Flex Keyboard feature that requires Windows 11. Model verification is the step that prevents most accessory and setup problems.
