You can use a spare PC as a dedicated YouTube streaming encoder: verify that your channel can go live, install OBS Studio, add your game and audio sources, connect a YouTube stream key, and test a stable output before leaving it running. The PC must remain powered, connected to the internet, and capable of capturing and encoding the video continuously. For prerecorded gameplay that should loop rather than live gameplay, a cloud service may be a better fit.
First decide what “always-on” means
Live gameplay
A live gameplay feed needs an active source to produce video: a game running on the spare PC, or gameplay supplied by another device. OBS combines the video and audio sources, then encodes and sends the stream to YouTube. A spare PC that is only encoding a separate console’s output may also need capture hardware, but a capture card is not required when the game runs on the streaming PC.
Looping prerecorded gameplay
A continuous loop of recorded gameplay is different from live capture. It does not show current gameplay or provide live interaction with the game, and you need the rights to use the footage and audio. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes cloud-based 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video as a use case; consider that approach if continuous playback, rather than a live game feed, is your goal.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring OBS
- Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Do this ahead of your planned start, not at the last minute.
- Use YouTube Studio to create or select the live stream you intend to run. The stream key is a credential: YouTube describes it as a password and address for the stream. Do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with someone who should not be able to stream to your channel.

Set up OBS and connect the channel
- Install OBS Studio. Open OBS and run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the use case that best matches streaming, then let the wizard account for the PC and network before applying its suggested settings. Treat these as a starting point, not proof that the setup will hold up during a long stream.
- Add the picture source. In the Sources panel, use a game-capture source for a game running on the PC. If that does not capture the game reliably, test a window or display capture instead. For a separate console or computer, add the capture device as a video-capture source after connecting the required capture hardware.
- Add and check audio. Confirm that the game or desktop audio and any intended microphone appear in OBS. Watch the audio meters while the source plays; a visible meter confirms signal is reaching OBS, but listen to the YouTube test as well to catch missing, distorted, or unbalanced sound.
- Connect YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream, then copy the ingest URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Use the key only in OBS or another trusted encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS; select it when the server/URL options provided for your stream support it.
- Choose an output the PC and connection can sustain. Start conservatively, then test at the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to use. YouTube publishes encoder settings and bitrate recommendations; use the recommendation for your chosen output rather than assuming a faster-looking setting is always better. OBS notes that usable capacity depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting minimum system requirements does not guarantee a particular streaming quality.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test, check the YouTube preview, motion, audio, stream health, and watch-page accessibility. If you plan a local recording, confirm that the file is being created and growing. OBS’s quick-start guide and YouTube’s live-streaming tips both recommend testing and checking the stream before relying on it.
Choose settings by testing, not by the PC’s age
A spare PC can run a game smoothly and still struggle to render scenes and encode video at the same time. The game, overlays, capture, compositing, and encoding all draw on system resources. OBS’s requirements page cautions that the hardware needed varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- If OBS reports encoding or rendering lag, reduce the game’s graphics load or frame rate, simplify overlays and scenes, or lower the stream’s resolution or frame rate.
- Use a suitable hardware encoder if the PC has one and it performs reliably. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, but older encoders may produce lower image quality than a suitable alternative.
- If the stream looks unstable despite the PC keeping up, lower the bitrate or output quality and test again. A bitrate that exceeds the sustained upload capacity can cause dropped frames or disconnections.
- Test the exact game and scene layout you will use. A quiet desktop test may not reveal problems that appear when the game, effects, and overlays are active.

Plan for interruptions and long streams
Dropped frames or disconnections
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections generally point to a connection problem between the PC and YouTube’s ingest server. Check whether the network is stable, whether other traffic is competing for upload capacity, and whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable. Test again after changing one factor at a time; lowering bitrate is often a useful diagnostic step. OBS’s network troubleshooting guide explains these symptoms.
Power, crashes, and recovery
A PC-based stream depends on the computer, power, network connection, OBS, and game or video source all continuing to work. A desktop UPS is a reasonable optional measure for brief power interruptions, but it will not fix internet outages or software failures. Test your recovery procedure rather than assuming OBS or the PC will resume correctly after a crash, restart, or loss of power. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring; an unattended stream needs an owner or alerting plan to notice failures.

Archive limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one stream longer than 12 hours being preserved in full. If keeping the complete footage matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and make a separate local recording plan; test that the local file grows and remains playable.
