Build a dedicated HTML/CSS page for your social card, render it with a screenshot API, save the returned image at a stable public URL, and point your page’s Open Graph metadata to that image. Then inspect the link on the platforms where you plan to share it. This approach gives you control over the card’s design and lets you generate different images from page-specific titles, authors, or descriptions.
How the screenshot-to-preview workflow works
- Design a card template: create a small HTML page containing the text and visuals you want in the preview, such as the title, author, site name, or a short description.
- Set a fixed canvas: style the page to the dimensions you want the image to have. A 1200 × 630 pixel canvas is used in vendor examples and guidance, but it is not a universal Open Graph requirement.
- Render the template: call a screenshot API with the template URL and its dynamic values. Choose a viewport or element selector that captures the card rather than unrelated page content; allow time for fonts and other assets to load.
- Keep the image available: save or cache the output and serve it from a stable, public URL that social crawlers can retrieve without signing in.
- Add metadata and verify it: put the image URL in the shared page’s Open Graph tags, then inspect the actual unfurl on destination platforms.

API controls and image URL lifetimes vary by provider; for example, OpenGraph.io documents screenshot links that expire after 24 hours, so download or cache an image when it must remain available longer: OpenGraph.io screenshot API documentation.

Design a card template that can accept page data
Make the card a purpose-built page or component, not a screenshot of the entire article by default. Keep its layout fixed and pass in the values that change for each share. A basic template might use a title, author, and site name; encode dynamic values safely for HTML and URL use, and provide sensible fallbacks for missing data.
For example, a template can expose query parameters such as title, description, and author. Ensure text wraps within the card, remains legible at the final image size, and does not get clipped when titles are unusually long. If the design uses remote fonts or images, wait until they have loaded before capture.

Choose dimensions for the destination
1200 × 630 pixels (about 1.91:1) is a common implementation choice in the cited vendor examples. ScreenshotAPI’s template example and OG Fetch’s endpoint example use that size; Screenshot API’s guide also describes a 1200 × 675 (16:9) variant for X when that crop is desired. These are vendor examples or guidance, not dimensions mandated by the Open Graph protocol. Check the current crop and image requirements of the platforms you target.

Render the image with a screenshot API
Use the API’s documented controls to capture either the full card viewport or only the card element. Providers differ in whether they accept a hosted URL or HTML, how they pass dynamic data, which output formats and quality settings they support, and how long returned image URLs remain valid. Check authentication, caching, and expiry behavior before building around a generated URL.

Useful controls may include viewport width and height, output format, quality, element selection, and a capture delay. OpenGraph.io documents format, quality, full-page capture, viewport presets, element selection, dark mode, and capture delay in its screenshot API reference. Confirm the parameters supported by the provider you choose; do not assume they are interchangeable.

Where to store the result
For production, arrange for the image to live at an HTTPS URL that remains stable and is publicly readable by crawlers. A generated API URL may be temporary; OpenGraph.io, for instance, documents a 24-hour expiry. Download the image to your own storage or use a provider’s cache or delivery route if the image must outlive that window. If the card changes, use a new image URL or otherwise account for cache refreshes so platforms do not keep showing an older image.
Add Open Graph metadata to the shared page
Put the tags in the page’s <head>. Replace the example values with the title and canonical URL of the page being shared and the absolute public URL of the generated image.

Check the rendered card itself and the social preview separately: a correct screenshot does not prove that a platform can fetch the image or has refreshed its cached preview. Screenshot API guidance recommends using Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector, sharing a link to yourself on X, and testing an unfurl in Slack. Platform tools and behavior can change, so confirm that the relevant inspector is currently available and check the link where it will actually appear.

Troubleshooting common preview problems
- The wrong image appears: inspect the shared page’s source and confirm it has the intended absolute
og:imageURL and the correct canonicalog:url. If multiple image tags exist, put the preferred one first. - The crawler cannot fetch the image: open the image URL without a logged-in session and confirm it is publicly reachable over HTTPS. Remove authentication barriers and check that the host permits crawler requests.
- The card is clipped or surrounded by page content: verify viewport dimensions and capture settings. Use a selector for the card if appropriate, and confirm that the API captured the intended element rather than the whole page.
- Text, fonts, or images are missing: make sure the template’s assets finish loading before capture. Use a supported delay or wait control where needed and check that external assets are reachable to the rendering service.
- An old preview persists after an update: image hosts and social platforms may cache content. Use the applicable platform refresh or inspection tool and, where suitable, publish the revised image under a new URL.
- A previously working image URL stops working: check whether the screenshot provider’s returned link expires. Download or cache the file and serve it from a stable location for long-lived pages.
