Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep every side of a portable room heater at least three feet from curtains and anything else that can burn. Put it on a stable, level surface, prevent children and pets from reaching or tipping it, plug an electric model directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off whenever you leave the room or go to sleep. The heater’s manual may require more clearance; its instructions take priority.
This guidance is U.S.-oriented and follows safety advice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). Fuel-burning heaters require additional carbon-monoxide precautions.

Start with a clear, measured space
A portable heater needs an unobstructed zone on every side, not just in front of its grille. Measure from the heater’s outermost surface, including a rear housing, side panel, feet or projecting control, to the nearest curtain, furniture, bedding, clothing, paper, toy, pet bed or other combustible item. The CPSC’s 2026 wording is direct: “Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture, bedding, and curtains.”

| Potential hazard | How to control it |
|---|---|
| Curtains and drapes | Keep the entire curtain, hem and tie-back outside the required clearance. Check the fabric while windows, fans or heating vents are creating air movement. |
| Bedding and clothing | Move beds, blankets, laundry baskets and drying clothes away before switching the heater on. Do not use the heater to dry clothing. |
| Furniture and paper | Clear sofas, chairs, books, newspapers, packaging and toys from all sides. A heater should not sit under a desk or beside a crowded shelf. |
| Pet items | Relocate beds, blankets, crates, food mats and toys. Animals can move these objects after you have positioned the heater. |
Do not rely on a quick visual estimate. Walk around the heater and inspect the closest point on each side. Curtains are especially easy to underestimate because they may hang outside the zone when still and drift into it later.
Choose a location that cannot be knocked over
Set the heater on a hard, stable, level surface that will not flex, wobble or slide. Keep it out of walkways, door swings and places where a child can grab the cord. A low table, stool, box, bed, sofa, chair or pile of books is not a suitable stand. Never balance a heater on an uneven surface to aim warmth at a particular spot.
Position the controls where an adult can reach them without leaning over hot components. Keep the heater upright in the orientation specified by the manual; do not operate it on its side or upside down unless the manufacturer explicitly designed it for that position.
Tip-over protection is useful, but it is a backup rather than permission to place the heater where it can be hit. A model that shuts off after falling can still expose a child or pet to hot surfaces, damage its cord, or ignite nearby material before the shutoff acts.
Do not improvise an enclosure
There is no single barrier design or universal distance that is safe for every child, animal, room and heater. A gate, playpen, chair or homemade screen may reduce the required air space, block an intake or outlet, trap heat, or conflict with the manual. Do not surround the heater unless the manufacturer specifically provides instructions for that arrangement and the required clearance remains open.
The safest approach is environmental control: place the heater where children and animals cannot reach it, move nearby objects, and supervise the room. If you cannot create that arrangement, do not run the heater there.

Keep children and pets away from the operating heater
Explain that the heater is hot and is not a toy, but do not treat a verbal warning as a physical safeguard. Infants, toddlers and children who are curious about switches can approach quickly, pull a cord or push furniture into the heater. Dogs can wag, jump or knock it over; cats may climb onto or behind it; smaller animals can chew cords.

Supervision must account for normal interruptions: a diaper change, answering the door, preparing food or taking a pet outside is enough reason to switch the heater off unless another responsible adult is actively watching the room.
Keep children and pets from touching the housing, grille, controls and cord. Do not allow a child to carry, reposition or plug in a portable heater. Let the unit cool fully before moving or storing it.
Set up an electric heater without overloading the circuit
Plug an electric portable heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord, multi-outlet adapter or power strip. Portable heaters draw substantial current, and an added connection can overheat even when the heater appears to be working normally.
- Inspect the heater, plug and cord before each use. Do not operate it if insulation is cut, crushed, frayed or chewed.
- Insert the plug firmly into a suitable wall receptacle. Do not force a loose plug or use an adapter to make it fit.
- Keep the cord out of walkways and away from hot surfaces, water, pet teeth and places where a child can pull it.
- Never run the cord under a rug or carpet. Covering can hide damage and prevent heat from escaping.
- Do not pin the cord beneath furniture or close it in a door. Route it where it remains visible and protected without tension.
Check the plug and outlet after the heater has been running. If the cord, plug or receptacle becomes hot, smells scorched, shows discoloration, sparks, or trips a circuit, turn the heater off and unplug it if you can do so safely. Stop using that heater and obtain qualified electrical or appliance help; do not continue by moving it to another outlet or adding a power strip.

Turn it off before leaving or sleeping
Switch the heater off whenever you leave the area and before going to bed. USFA’s heating-fire guidance states: “Turn heaters off when you go to bed or leave the room.” Do not leave a portable heater operating in an empty bedroom, nursery, playroom, garage or other confined space.
Use the heater only while an adult is present and awake enough to notice a problem. A thermostat, timer or automatic shutoff can reduce some risks, but it does not make unattended operation safe. Check that the heating element has stopped and follow the manual’s instructions for unplugging or cooling before moving the unit.
Build shutdown into your routine: before leaving, confirm the switch is off, remove nearby fabric or toys that may have shifted, and make sure children and pets cannot reach the cooling unit or cord.
Curtain-specific checks
Curtains can create a hazard even when the heater is initially positioned correctly. A hem can drift toward a warm outlet, a child can pull a panel down, or a pet can brush against fabric and move it. Examine the full curtain assembly, including valances, tie-backs, sheers and blinds with fabric components.
- Open or secure curtains so they remain outside the heater’s clearance while the unit operates.
- Do not place the heater directly beneath a window treatment or where rising warm air can lift fabric toward the heater.
- Check the curtain again after turning on ceiling fans, portable fans or ventilation that changes airflow.
- Keep curtain cords and chains away from the heater and out of children’s reach.
- Do not drape a blanket, towel or clothing over the heater to warm or dry it.
If a curtain cannot stay outside the required zone without constant adjustment, choose another heater location or do not use the heater in that room.
Fuel-burning heaters need carbon-monoxide precautions
Portable fuel-burning heaters are a separate risk because incomplete combustion or unsafe venting can produce carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, potentially fatal gas. The clearance and supervision rules still apply, but they do not address CO.

Follow the exact manufacturer instructions for the fuel, ventilation, combustion air, placement and permitted indoor use. A heater designed for outdoor use must not be brought indoors. Do not modify a vent, use an unapproved fuel or operate a unit in a way the manual prohibits.

Older CPSC guidance for an unvented fuel-burning heater specifically advises keeping doors open to the rest of the house. Because that advice is model- and installation-sensitive, verify the current manual and local requirements for your equipment rather than applying a generic ventilation rule.
Use carbon-monoxide alarms
Maintain working CO alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level where local guidance requires them. Test them according to their instructions and replace batteries or the alarm at the stated interval.
If an alarm sounds, or anyone develops headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, confusion or unusual sleepiness, leave immediately for fresh air and call emergency services from outside. Do not re-enter or silence the alarm merely because the heater appears normal. Have the appliance and fuel system checked by qualified professionals before use resumes.
A five-minute room walk-through before each use
Use this sequence whenever you move the heater, change furniture, open curtains or bring children or pets into the room:
- Read the manual. Confirm that the model is approved for the intended indoor use, note any clearance greater than the minimum, and identify required orientation and safety features.
- Measure all sides. Check the nearest curtain, bed, sofa, clothing, paper, toy, pet item and wall. Remove or reposition anything inside the required clear zone.
- Test movement. Observe curtains and loose fabric with normal fans, drafts and foot traffic. Secure or move anything that could drift toward the heater.
- Confirm stability. Place the heater upright on a level, solid surface away from doorways and traffic. Gently verify that it does not rock or slide.
- Plan supervision. Decide which adult will remain present. If no one can watch the room, do not turn the heater on.
- Route the cord. Use a direct wall connection, keep the cord visible and protected, and ensure it is not under a rug, trapped by furniture or accessible for pulling or chewing.
- Check alarms. For fuel-burning equipment, confirm that required CO alarms are present and functioning before operation.
- Recheck after starting. Watch for unusual smell, smoke, noise, hot plugs, shifting fabric or movement by a child or pet. Turn the heater off at the first unsafe sign.
Features to consider when selecting a portable heater
Safety features support safe placement; they do not replace it. Before buying, verify the exact model’s specifications and certification rather than assuming every heater includes the same protections.

| Feature | What to verify | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized-laboratory certification | Look for certification from a recognized testing laboratory identified on the product and in its documentation. | Certification does not permit operation near curtains, bedding or children. |
| Automatic tip-over shutoff | Confirm that the unit is designed to stop heating when tipped and understand how it resets. | It cannot prevent a fall, contact burns or ignition before shutdown. |
| Guard around hot components | Check that the guard is intact and that fingers, toys and pet noses cannot easily reach hot parts. | A guard is not a substitute for keeping children and animals away. |
| Clear instructions | Read the manual for clearance, outlet, ventilation, orientation and cleaning requirements. | Instructions cannot make an unsuitable room or damaged cord safe. |
What to do when something goes wrong
The heater tips over
Keep children and pets away. Disconnect power only if you can do so without touching a hot or damaged part, then let the unit cool. Inspect the housing, controls, plug and cord for damage. Do not put it back into service unless the manufacturer or a qualified technician confirms that it is safe.
Fabric touches the heater or begins to smoke
Move people away, turn the heater off and call emergency services if there is fire or spreading smoke. Do not reach through flames or pull burning fabric across the room. Once the area is safe, discard or professionally assess damaged material and do not reuse a heater that has overheated or been exposed to fire.
The plug or outlet is hot
Turn the heater off and stop using the outlet for that appliance. Do not substitute an extension cord or power strip. Arrange qualified electrical or appliance service to identify the cause before using the heater again.

A child or pet is burned
Remove the source of heat and seek medical or veterinary advice promptly. For a serious burn, electrical injury, breathing problem or injury involving a fire, call emergency services. Afterward, change the heater’s location and supervision plan rather than simply restarting it.
A CO alarm sounds
Leave immediately, take children and pets with you if it is safe, and call emergency services from outside. Do not return until responders or qualified personnel say it is safe. Never assume that opening a window or turning off the heater alone has resolved the danger.
Scope of this guidance
The clearance, placement, outlet and shutdown advice applies to portable heaters generally, but a model’s manual can impose stricter requirements. The CPSC and USFA material cited here is U.S.-oriented. Building, electrical, fire and fuel rules can differ by jurisdiction, and fuel-burning installation details depend on the appliance and location.
When the room cannot provide a stable position, the required clearance, a safe cord route and continuous adult supervision, the correct safety decision is not to operate the portable heater there.
