Yes. A Roku streaming player can work without a TV if your computer monitor has a compatible HDMI input and supports HDCP for protected streaming. You’ll also need a way to hear the audio: HDMI carries sound, but a monitor may not have speakers or an audio output you can use.
What your monitor needs
- HDMI input: A Roku Streaming Stick plugs directly into HDMI; other Roku players may connect with an HDMI cable. Check that the monitor’s input is compatible with your Roku model. Roku’s monitor connection guidance covers connecting a player to a computer monitor.
- HDCP support: Protected movies and shows require copy protection support across the HDMI connection. Roku says each device connected by HDMI for watching movies and TV shows must support HDCP. If HDCP is missing or incompatible, protected content may fail to play.
- An audio path: Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers or an audio output. If it does not, you’ll need separate speakers and a compatible way to connect them.
What changes for 4K or HDR
For 4K or HDR playback, Roku requires HDCP 2.2 support on every device in the HDMI chain. That includes the monitor and any intermediate equipment. Roku identifies Premium High Speed HDMI cables for the relevant 4K/HDR setup. If part of the chain does not meet the requirement, you may see a warning or get a lower resolution, such as 720p or 1080p. Roku’s 4K and HDR guidance explains the requirements.

A monitor’s resolution alone does not establish whether it will play protected 4K content. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for its HDCP version, and check every device or adapter between the Roku and monitor.

Connect and set up the Roku
- Connect the Roku player or Streaming Stick to the monitor’s HDMI input. Follow the Roku device’s setup instructions to provide power.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input used by the Roku.
- During Roku setup, let the player detect the display type. To adjust it later, go to Settings > Display type. Roku’s setup instructions describe display detection and this setting.
- Test playback and confirm that you can hear sound through the monitor or your connected audio equipment.
Fix common picture and sound problems
Protected video shows an HDCP error
- Check that the monitor supports HDCP.
- Reconnect the HDMI plugs securely and try another HDMI input or cable if available.
- Temporarily remove adapters or other intermediate devices and connect the Roku directly to the monitor.
- If possible, test the Roku with another HDCP-compatible monitor. Roku’s monitor troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and trying another compatible display.
4K or HDR does not work as expected
Check that the monitor, cable, and every intermediate device support HDCP 2.2. Simplify the HDMI chain by removing intermediate equipment and test again. A device in the chain that lacks HDCP 2.2 can prevent 4K/HDR playback or lead to a lower resolution. Roku’s 4K/HDR requirements provide further troubleshooting guidance.

The picture works, but there is no sound
Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers and whether they are enabled. If it has an audio output, connect suitable external speakers there. If it lacks a usable audio path, an HDMI audio extractor may be an option, but compatibility depends on the Roku, monitor, and extractor; there is no universal solution.
