How to Use a Raspberry Pi to Send Internet Radio to YouTube Live

You can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that combines an internet radio feed with a picture or other video, then sends the result to YouTube Live. The practical sequence is to confirm rebroadcast rights, identify the station feed and visual source, create a YouTube broadcast, configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, and verify the preview before going public.

Before you start: confirm rebroadcast rights

A radio stream being publicly accessible does not mean you have permission to retransmit it. Before sending a station’s audio to YouTube, obtain the necessary permission from the station and confirm that music rights and any applicable broadcast approvals cover your use and territory. YouTube’s Terms of Service require users to have the necessary rights, and its live-stream copyright guidance says third-party content can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even when you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. A successful preview or working stream key is not proof that you have rights to the audio.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi with an operating system and network connection suitable for the encoder you choose. No minimum Pi model is established for this workflow; check the software’s requirements and test the sustained workload on your own board.
  • The station’s audio stream URL and details about its format or codec. Your encoder must be able to read the actual feed and handle a lost connection appropriately.
  • A visual source to accompany the audio: for example, a still image, a visualizer, a looping video, or a camera feed.
  • An encoder that can combine that audio and visual source and send a YouTube-compatible live stream.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available.

Raspberry Pi’s streaming documentation describes network multimedia streaming with rpicam-apps and libav, including audio support in suitable formats. It covers camera and network streaming rather than this exact radio-to-YouTube setup, so it does not establish a universal encoder, audio input, or command for every station feed.

Set up the radio stream on the Raspberry Pi

  1. Identify the station’s feed. Get the stream URL from the station and confirm its format or codec with the station’s documentation or provider. A URL that plays in one application may still use a format your chosen encoder cannot read.
  2. Choose and install an encoder. Select software that supports the feed’s format, your chosen visual source, and a YouTube ingest protocol. Follow the encoder’s installation and input instructions for your particular Raspberry Pi model and operating system.
  3. Configure the audio input. Enter the station feed as the encoder’s audio source. Check the encoder’s documentation for its required input syntax and audio settings; those vary by software and feed format.
  4. Add a visual source. Configure a still image, visualizer, video loop, or camera feed alongside the audio. YouTube Live is receiving an encoded audiovisual stream, so do not assume that sending audio alone will produce the intended broadcast.
  5. Check reconnect behavior and resource use. Find out how your encoder responds if the radio feed or network drops. Monitor the specific Pi’s CPU, memory, and stream stability during a test; the suitable settings and resource load depend on the board, OS, encoder, and inputs.

There is no single verified FFmpeg command for this workflow: the right command depends on the station URL and codec, visual source, encoder version, Pi model, operating system, and YouTube ingest settings. Avoid copying a command that assumes a different feed format or device without checking each input and option.

Create a YouTube Live broadcast and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Create a broadcast or schedule one, following the options shown in Live Control Room.
  2. Open the broadcast’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send content to your broadcast, so do not publish or share it.
  3. In the encoder, enter the URL in its server or ingest field and the key in its stream-key field. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection flow.
  4. Choose an ingest protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder. YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion in its Live Streaming API documentation. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; select the RTMPS server URL specifically if you want encrypted transport. HLS requires encoder support and has higher latency than continuous RTMP.
  5. Start the encoder and wait for the broadcast preview. Confirm that both the picture and station audio arrive and that the stream remains steady. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to make it public.

Monitor the broadcast and end it cleanly

Keep YouTube Studio’s stream health panel open while the Pi is encoding. YouTube’s API documentation identifies health conditions such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Check the preview as well as the status indicators: a healthy-looking connection is not enough if the picture is blank or the radio audio is absent.

When finished, stop the encoder and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that rule for a longer broadcast.

Choose an encoder by testing these points

There is no tested product ranking for this particular pipeline. Evaluate the encoder you plan to use against the actual station feed and Pi rather than assuming that a feature list guarantees reliable operation.

Rank #3
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
  • Feed compatibility: Can it read the station’s actual audio format, and what happens when the feed disconnects?
  • Audio and visuals: Can it combine that audio with your selected still, visualizer, loop, or camera source?
  • YouTube ingest: Does it support the protocol and server URL you intend to use, including RTMPS if encrypted transport is required?
  • Pi workload: Does it remain stable on your particular model and operating system during a sustained test?
  • Monitoring and recovery: Can you detect missing audio, a failed input, or a dropped connection, and does the software reconnect as you expect?

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not receive the stream

Check that the encoder is running, that the URL and key were copied into the correct fields, and that you selected the matching ingest URL for the chosen protocol. If live streaming is not yet enabled on a first-time channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.

The preview has no sound

Verify that the radio URL is reachable from the Pi, that the encoder supports the feed’s format, and that the feed is assigned to the encoder’s audio input. YouTube lists missing audio as a stream-health issue; test the audio at the encoder input as well as in the Live Control Room preview.

Rank #4
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 16GB Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (16GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)

The audio plays but the picture is blank or missing

Check that the visual source is configured and that the encoder is sending video along with audio. Confirm the picture in YouTube’s preview before going public.

The stream is interrupted or the radio stops

Determine whether the problem is the station feed, the Pi’s network connection, or the encoder process. Check the feed separately, inspect the encoder’s logs or status, and test its reconnect behavior. YouTube may interrupt a stream when it detects third-party content, so also check the broadcast’s copyright status and rights clearance.

The stream-health panel reports low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch

Compare the encoder’s output with the settings expected by YouTube and review the stream-health details. The appropriate bitrate and frame rate depend on the output you configure; the available sources do not establish one fixed setting for every Pi, visual source, and encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a different approach from hosting a live radio feed on a Pi: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud rather than taking a live station URL as input. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can stay off, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
