How to use a PlayStation controller with a touchscreen instead of physical buttons

The documented way to play a PS5 or PS4 with touchscreen controls is Sony’s PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone or tablet. Start a Remote Play session, and the app renders virtual buttons, sticks and other controls on the mobile display. A DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller is optional for this method; you are not converting the physical controller into a touchscreen.

The console still runs the game. Your mobile device receives the streamed picture and sends the taps and gestures you make on its virtual controls back to the console. Compatibility varies by device, operating-system version and country, so check Sony’s current Remote Play support information for the exact phone or tablet you intend to use.

What this method actually does

Remote Play is a streaming-and-input feature. The PS5 or PS4 executes the game, while the mobile Remote Play app displays the session and supplies an on-screen control layout. Sony’s PS5 instructions state that controller buttons appear on the device when Remote Play begins. The same documentation explains that double-tapping the on-screen touch pad produces touch-pad behavior, while double-tapping an on-screen stick invokes the corresponding L3 or R3 input. See Sony’s PS5 Remote Play instructions for the documented gestures.

This differs from modifying a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. The physical gamepad remains a separate accessory; the touchscreen controls are software rendered by Remote Play. Sony’s UK Remote Play page lists mobile touchscreen controls as an alternative to either physical controller: PlayStation Remote Play.

Because the game is running on the console, Remote Play is not a way to install a touchscreen mode into a game or to replace the controller hardware inside a DualSense. It is a second control path supplied by the app. Ending the mobile session leaves the console and its normal controller behavior unchanged.

What you need before starting

  • A PS5 or PS4 with Remote Play available.
  • A compatible touchscreen phone or tablet with the current PS Remote Play app.
  • A PlayStation account that is associated with the console.
  • A network connection suitable for Remote Play. Sony’s compatibility and availability requirements can change by operating-system version and region, so verify them for your location before choosing a device.

The evidence available here does not establish a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix. Do not assume that every Android tablet, iPhone, iPad or Xperia device is supported simply because it has a touchscreen. Confirm the intended model and country on Sony’s current support pages.

You do not need to buy a second physical PlayStation controller to try the touchscreen method. A phone or tablet is the surface that shows the virtual gamepad, while the console, account, app and network provide the rest of the setup. If you decide that taps are not suitable, a compatible DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 can be used as a separate Remote Play input instead.

Set up touchscreen controls with PS Remote Play

  1. Prepare the console. Turn on Remote Play on the PS5 or PS4 using the console’s current Remote Play settings. Menu names can change with system software, so follow the instructions for your console generation rather than relying on an old screenshot.
  2. Install the mobile app. Download the official PS Remote Play app on the compatible touchscreen phone or tablet. Use the current app release supported in your country.
  3. Sign in. Open the app and sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the console you want to reach. A different account may not be able to find or start the intended console session.
  4. Connect to the console. Choose the PS5 or PS4 shown by Remote Play and wait for the session to establish. The console’s video output should then appear in the app.
  5. Use the virtual gamepad. When the session starts, the app displays the virtual buttons and sticks. Tap those controls instead of pressing a physical DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. The exact layout and labels can vary with the console and app version.
  6. End the session safely. Leave Remote Play through the app’s disconnect control before closing it, especially if another person needs to use the console locally.

Sony’s Xperia setup guidance also describes choosing the on-screen controller instead of attaching a controller to the Xperia device. Sony USA Support calls that option “a simple and easy secondary input method,” not a replacement that changes the characteristics of a physical gamepad. The setup article is at Sony Xperia Remote Play setup.

How the on-screen controls work

Buttons, sticks and the touch pad

The virtual layout represents the principal controls that Remote Play needs for a PS5 or PS4 game. Tap a displayed face button, shoulder button or direction, and the app sends that input to the console. Drag on a displayed analog stick for movement or camera control. Use the on-screen touch pad when a game asks for a touch-pad action.

Controls are overlays inside the Remote Play session, so they are available only while the app is connected and showing gameplay. They are not a new control scheme saved to the console. A game’s own prompts still describe the expected PlayStation inputs, while the player performs those inputs by tapping or dragging the corresponding overlay.

Documented touch gestures

Sony specifically documents two double-tap behaviors: double-tap the virtual touch pad for touch-pad behavior, and double-tap the virtual left or right stick for L3 or R3. These gestures are useful when a game requires pressing a stick or clicking the touch pad and you do not see a separate click control. Other gestures, button placement and overlays may depend on the current app version.

If a single tap appears to do nothing, first identify whether the game is asking for a stick click or touch-pad press rather than ordinary movement. Use the relevant double-tap gesture, then try the action again. Keep in mind that a gesture documented for one overlay does not prove that every future app version will use identical placement or labels.

What touchscreen play does not promise

Touchscreen input is not established as identical in precision, physical feedback or convenience to a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. The official material confirms that the controls appear and accept taps and gestures, but it does not provide comparative performance testing. Treat the method as an alternative input route and assess whether its layout suits the particular game and player.

Fast action games, games with frequent simultaneous inputs, or titles that rely heavily on tactile positioning may feel different from a physical pad, but no official source here measures those differences. The sensible test is the player’s own session: check whether buttons remain visible, whether the desired gestures are easy to perform and whether the player can complete the game’s required actions.

Choosing the right touchscreen device

For a device purchase or setup, start with Sony’s compatibility list rather than screen size alone. The important questions are whether the current PS Remote Play app supports the device and operating system in the reader’s country, whether the device can connect reliably to the console, and whether its display is practical for the player’s control needs. A “compatible touchscreen device” may be either a phone or a tablet; no universal list of supported models is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check region and software version: Remote Play availability and app support can differ by country and may change after an operating-system update.
  • Confirm the account: The mobile sign-in must correspond to the PlayStation account associated with the target console.
  • Use current documentation: If a device is missing from Sony’s current support information, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the presence of a touchscreen.
  • Consider the display and controls: A larger tablet may provide more room for virtual controls, but no source here measures how screen size affects accuracy or comfort.
  • Check the intended game: Verify that the on-screen layout exposes the controls the game requires, including touch-pad and stick-click actions.

There is no substantiated universal recommendation for a particular phone, tablet, screen size or accessory in the official material cited here. A product listing should therefore be conditional: look for a compatible touchscreen device for PS Remote Play, then verify the exact model against Sony’s current regional support page.

Network and session considerations

Remote Play depends on a connection suitable for streaming both the console’s video and your return input. The sources do not establish a single speed, latency or data-use threshold that applies to every household. Instead of treating a published number as universal, follow Sony’s current requirements and test the actual console-and-device combination.

Keep the app and console software current enough for the support instructions that apply to your setup. If the console is shared, remember that a Remote Play connection occupies the console session; disconnect in the app when finished so another person can use the system locally. These are session-management steps, not changes to the controller itself.

Troubleshoot a session that will not work

The console is not found

  • Confirm that the console is powered on or configured for the Remote Play state required by Sony’s instructions.
  • Check that Remote Play is enabled on the console.
  • Sign out and back in with the PlayStation account associated with that console.
  • Verify that the phone or tablet and the app version are supported in your country. A touchscreen alone does not establish support.
  • Check the network connection on both ends and retry after restarting the app if the connection does not establish.

The picture appears but controls are missing

  • Wait for the Remote Play session to finish loading; the virtual controls are displayed as part of the mobile session.
  • Check that the app is in its normal gameplay view rather than a system or connection screen.
  • Install the current app version and restart the session if the overlay remains absent.
  • Confirm that you selected the on-screen controller option where the app presents a choice between a connected controller and touchscreen input.

A gesture does not perform the expected action

  • Use the documented double-tap gesture for the virtual touch pad or the relevant stick when the game requires touch-pad, L3 or R3 input.
  • Tap the displayed control deliberately and check whether the game is accepting input. The available evidence does not establish alternative gesture mappings for every app release.
  • If the game’s control scheme depends on a physical accessory or a feature not represented by the overlay, consult the current Sony support information rather than assuming the touchscreen can reproduce it.

The experience is unsuitable for the player

Remote Play’s touchscreen mode is optional. You can end the session and connect a compatible physical controller instead, or consider the accessibility-focused options below. Do not treat a poor fit for one player or game as evidence that the app is defective; the official sources provide no general comfort, precision or latency benchmark.

Accessibility options that are separate from touchscreen Remote Play

PS5 system button customization

PS5 accessibility settings include configurable button assignments and other controller-related options. These settings alter how a physical controller’s inputs are interpreted by the console; they do not create a touchscreen gamepad. See PlayStation accessibility features for the currently documented settings.

Assist-controller mode

Sony’s accessibility features also describe an assist-controller capability in which two controllers can operate one PS5 as though they were a single controller. This can support assisted play when one person helps with inputs. It still uses physical controllers and is distinct from the virtual controls rendered by Remote Play.

Access controller

Sony’s Access controller is a separate PS5 accessibility-focused physical controller kit, not a touchscreen solution. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2023 launch announcement specifies 19 interchangeable button caps, three interchangeable stick caps, profiles, input remapping and the ability to disable buttons. The same announcement reports support for 30 control profiles. Those are product capabilities reported by Sony, not independent performance findings. Details are in the Access controller launch announcement.

Choose this route when the need is a configurable physical layout, remapped inputs or disabled buttons. Choose Remote Play’s mobile overlay when the goal is specifically to tap virtual controls on a phone or tablet. Neither option should be described as converting the other into a touchscreen.

Where PlayStation Portal fits

PlayStation Portal has a built-in touchscreen display, but that fact alone does not establish a full virtual gamepad. Its instruction manual identifies an 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen: PlayStation Portal instruction manual. The official material reviewed for this guide does not say that Portal’s touchscreen replaces all physical gameplay controls. Therefore, do not present Portal as the touchscreen-only method described above; the documented method is PS Remote Play on a compatible mobile device.

Controller and console features; exact cross-device options vary and are not stated here. Controller, mobile device, app and console support. Players who want Remote Play video but a physical gamepad.
PS5 accessibility button assignments Yes, with a physical controller. Direct PS5 input interpretation. Configurable button assignments and other settings are documented. PS5 accessibility settings and a compatible controller. Players who need remapped physical inputs.
Access controller Yes. Direct PS5 input from a configurable physical kit. 19 button caps, 3 stick caps, profiles, remapping and disabling buttons; 30 profiles reported by Sony in 2023. PS5 and the Access controller ecosystem. Players who need an adaptable physical layout.

The table compares the documented function of each approach. It does not rank comfort, accuracy, latency or ease of use because the cited material provides no comparative testing for those factors.

Direct answers to common questions

Can I use the touchscreen without owning a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4?

Yes, Sony presents mobile touchscreen controls as an alternative to those physical controllers during a Remote Play session. You still need a compatible mobile device, the app, a supported PS5 or PS4 and the associated PlayStation account.

Does this make my physical PlayStation controller touchscreen-controlled?

No. The touchscreen is an input surface supplied by the Remote Play app. Your physical controller remains unchanged and is optional for the mobile session.

Can I use any phone or tablet?

No universal model list is established here. Check Sony’s current compatibility information for the device, operating-system version and country you plan to use.

Is PlayStation Portal a full virtual controller?

The manual confirms an 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen, but the cited documentation does not establish that the touchscreen replaces all physical gameplay controls. Do not assume it is equivalent to the mobile Remote Play overlay.

Does Remote Play work with both PS5 and PS4?

Yes. Sony documents Remote Play connections from a mobile device to both PS5 and PS4. The exact menus, app behavior and supported devices can differ, so follow the instructions for the console generation and region involved.

Do I have to use touchscreen controls once Remote Play starts?

It is separate from PS5 button customization, assist-controller mode and the physical Access controller, each of which addresses accessibility in a different way.

Is there a universal cost or accessory requirement?

No single cost is established by the cited sources. The required categories are a supported PS5 or PS4, compatible touchscreen device, Remote Play app, associated account and suitable network connection. Any phone, tablet, mount or adaptive accessory should be evaluated for compatibility and the player’s needs rather than assumed necessary.

Will every game feel the same with taps?

No conclusion about equal precision, comfort or latency is supported. Remote Play provides the controls, but each player should assess whether the game’s required combinations, stick movement and touch-pad actions are practical on the chosen screen.
