Yes—you can connect a tablet to a phone hotspot without 5G. A hotspot shares whatever mobile-data connection the phone can currently use. If the phone has usable LTE coverage and the carrier allows tethering, the tablet can get online through the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot. The tablet does not need its own cellular plan or 5G radio for this connection.

The important limit is coverage: a hotspot can share an existing phone data connection, but it cannot create one. If the phone has no usable cellular data signal, enabling the hotspot will not provide internet access.

What changes when 5G is unavailable?

Nothing about the basic hotspot procedure changes. The phone has two separate wireless roles:

  • Its cellular connection reaches the mobile network. That connection may be 5G, LTE, or another supported mobile-data service.
  • Its hotspot creates a short-range Wi-Fi network that the tablet joins.

The tablet communicates with the phone over Wi-Fi, while the phone carries the tablet’s traffic over its available mobile-data connection. Joining the hotspot therefore does not give the tablet 5G capability; it gives the tablet internet access through the phone’s current connection.

Phone’s situation What the tablet can expect
Usable LTE data and hotspot service enabled on the plan The tablet can usually browse through the phone’s hotspot.
5G is unavailable, but LTE is available The hotspot can still work over LTE. Performance depends on the LTE signal, network conditions, phone, and plan.
The phone shows a cellular signal but mobile data is off The hotspot may appear, but it will not provide a working internet connection until mobile data is enabled.
The phone has no usable cellular data coverage The tablet may join the Wi-Fi network, but there is no internet path through the phone.
The carrier blocks tethering or the plan has exhausted its hotspot allowance The hotspot may be missing, blocked, slowed, or subject to the carrier’s stated limits or charges.

Apple’s cellular documentation describes supported devices using LTE and notes that 5G-capable equipment can switch to LTE when 5G does not offer a meaningful benefit. The exact behavior and available settings depend on the phone model, operating-system version, carrier, plan, and location. See Apple’s cellular-data guidance for the model and region qualifications.

Check these requirements first

Before changing settings, confirm the conditions that determine whether the connection can succeed:

  • The phone can use mobile data. Open a web page on the phone with Wi-Fi temporarily disconnected, or use another app that requires the cellular connection.
  • Mobile or cellular data is turned on. A phone can show signal bars while data access is disabled.
  • The plan permits tethering. Some operators require a hotspot feature, impose a separate hotspot allowance, or charge extra. Google’s Android Help explicitly warns that some operators limit or charge extra for tethering.
  • The tablet has Wi-Fi. Almost every modern tablet does, including Wi-Fi-only models.
  • You know the hotspot name and password. The phone displays both when hotspot settings are opened.
  • The devices are close enough for a stable Wi-Fi connection. Keep them together while pairing and during use.
  • The phone has enough battery for the session. Tethering increases battery use; connect the phone to power for a long session.

If any of these conditions is missing, the tablet may fail even though the hotspot switch itself is visible.

Connect an iPhone to an iPad or Wi-Fi tablet

The same iPhone hotspot can be joined by an iPad or by a Wi-Fi tablet from another manufacturer. The iPhone supplies the network; the tablet simply joins it like any other Wi-Fi network.

Turn on Personal Hotspot on the iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot. On some iOS versions, open Cellular or Mobile Data first, then choose Personal Hotspot.
  3. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  4. Read the displayed Wi-Fi Password. You will enter this password on the tablet.
  5. Leave the Personal Hotspot screen open until the tablet connects if the connection does not appear immediately. Apple includes this as a practical connection step.

Apple’s setup instructions are available at Connect to the Personal Hotspot of an iPhone or iPad. The phone’s hotspot name is normally based on the device name, so look for the iPhone name in the tablet’s Wi-Fi list.

Join from an iPad

  1. Open Settings on the iPad.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi.
  3. Wait for the iPhone’s hotspot name to appear under available networks.
  4. Tap that name.
  5. Enter the password shown on the iPhone when prompted.
  6. Wait for the Wi-Fi indicator to appear on the iPad, then open a page to verify internet access.

Apple documents this Wi-Fi joining process in Connect iPad to the internet. A Wi-Fi-only iPad can use the iPhone’s hotspot; it does not need a cellular subscription of its own.

Join from an Android or other Wi-Fi tablet

  1. Open the tablet’s Settings app.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi or Network and internet, depending on the tablet software.
  3. Select the iPhone’s hotspot name.
  4. Enter the password displayed in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings.
  5. Tap Connect, then test a web page.

If the iPhone’s network does not appear, toggle Wi-Fi off and on in the tablet, keep the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot page open, and scan again. If Personal Hotspot is unavailable on the iPhone, confirm that mobile data is enabled and ask the carrier whether the plan includes hotspot service. Apple lists carrier support and possible fees in its Personal Hotspot instructions and its iPad Personal Hotspot guidance.

Connect an Android phone to a tablet

Android menu names vary by manufacturer and software version, but the usual Wi-Fi hotspot route is consistent.

Turn on the hotspot

  1. Swipe down from the top of the Android phone’s screen to open Quick Settings.
  2. Tap Hotspot.
  3. If the tile is not visible, tap Edit in Quick Settings and add the Hotspot tile.
  4. If you need to inspect or change the network details, touch and hold Hotspot. This opens the hotspot settings, where the network name and password are shown.
  5. Keep the hotspot enabled while you connect the tablet.

Google notes that some Android instructions apply only to Android 14 or newer and that manufacturers can place the controls in different menus. The official step-by-step reference is Share a mobile connection by hotspot or tethering on Android.

Join from the tablet

  1. Open the tablet’s Settings.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi or the equivalent network setting.
  3. Select the Android phone’s hotspot name.
  4. Type the password shown in the phone’s hotspot settings.
  5. Tap Connect and wait for the tablet to show the Wi-Fi connection.
  6. Open a browser or another online app to confirm that the phone is forwarding data.

Wi-Fi is generally the simplest tethering method for a tablet because it does not require a cable and works with a wide range of tablet operating systems. If the hotspot tile is missing entirely, search the phone’s Settings app for hotspot or tethering; the exact path is device-specific.

What the tablet can and cannot do over an LTE hotspot

The tablet can use ordinary internet services—web pages, email, cloud apps, messaging, and other online functions—subject to the phone’s connection quality and the plan’s rules. The tablet does not become a 5G device. It remains a Wi-Fi client, and every request travels through the phone’s available mobile data.

When 5G is unavailable, LTE performance can vary with signal strength, local congestion, the phone’s modem, and the carrier’s network. A strong LTE connection can be perfectly adequate for routine tablet work, while a weak or congested connection may feel slow or repeatedly lose access. These conditions are independent of the Wi-Fi symbol shown on the tablet.

Do not interpret a successful Wi-Fi association as proof that the internet is available. The tablet can connect to the phone’s local hotspot even when the phone itself cannot reach the mobile network. Always test an online page after pairing.

Wi-Fi hotspot versus Bluetooth or USB tethering

Android also supports Bluetooth and USB tethering. These are alternatives when Wi-Fi is unavailable, unsuitable, or restricted by a particular device. They are not required for the normal phone-to-tablet setup.

Method What you need Joining experience Important limitation
Wi-Fi hotspot A phone with hotspot service and a Wi-Fi-capable tablet Select the phone’s network and enter its password Uses the phone’s battery and Wi-Fi radio; carrier tethering rules still apply
Bluetooth tethering Bluetooth support on both devices and compatible pairing controls Pair the devices, then enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone Menu names and support vary by device; it is less straightforward than joining a Wi-Fi network
USB tethering A suitable data cable and compatible USB support on both devices Connect the cable, then enable USB tethering on the phone Compatibility depends on the tablet and operating system. Google notes that Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers.

Exact speed or battery rankings between these methods are not universal and depend on the hardware and software involved. Use Wi-Fi first for a tablet, then consider Bluetooth or USB only when there is a concrete reason to avoid Wi-Fi. Google’s Android documentation covers all three methods and their device-specific caveats.

Carrier plans, hotspot allowances, and possible charges

Hotspot availability is not determined by the phone alone. A carrier can require a tethering feature, apply a separate hotspot-data allowance, restrict the service on some plans, or charge an additional fee. Apple and Google both warn that operator restrictions or charges can apply.

Check the plan’s current terms before relying on the connection for a long trip, work session, or large download. Look specifically for:

  • Whether hotspot or tethering is included at all.
  • Whether hotspot data is counted separately from the phone’s general mobile-data allowance.
  • What happens after the hotspot allowance is used, such as reduced service or a stop.
  • Whether additional charges can occur.
  • Whether the rules differ by country, plan type, or device.

No particular carrier or price can be stated without knowing your country and plan. The phone’s hotspot menu can be present even when the account is not eligible, so an enabled switch is not a guarantee of service.

Battery and data practices for longer sessions

Tethering keeps the phone’s cellular and Wi-Fi functions active at the same time, so it can drain the battery faster than ordinary standby use. For a long tablet session, connect the phone to a reliable power source. Google recommends connecting devices to power while tethering and disabling tethering afterward to extend battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place the phone where it still receives a good cellular signal; hiding it in a bag or moving it to a poor-coverage location can reduce reliability.
  • Keep the tablet reasonably close to the phone so the local Wi-Fi link remains stable.
  • Watch the phone’s data-usage indicator if the plan has a cap.
  • When finished, turn off Personal Hotspot on iPhone or Hotspot on Android.
  • Disconnect the tablet’s Wi-Fi connection if you do not want it to reconnect automatically later.

Apps on the tablet can consume mobile data just as they would on any other internet connection. Pause unnecessary synchronisation or large downloads when the plan is limited, but do not assume that the tablet’s Wi-Fi label means the traffic is unmetered.

Troubleshoot a hotspot that does not work

The hotspot option is missing

  1. Confirm that mobile or cellular data is turned on.
  2. Search Settings for hotspot or tethering in case the manufacturer placed the control elsewhere.
  3. Check whether the carrier supports hotspot service on the account.
  4. Install any normal operating-system update offered by the device, then check the setting again.

Apple specifically advises checking carrier support when Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable. Android menu locations differ by device, so the manufacturer’s instructions may be needed for an unusual interface.

The tablet cannot see the phone’s network

  1. Confirm that Allow Others to Join is on for iPhone or that Hotspot is on for Android.
  2. Keep the hotspot settings screen open on the phone while the tablet scans.
  3. Turn the tablet’s Wi-Fi off and back on, then refresh the network list.
  4. Move the devices closer together.
  5. Restart the hotspot and scan again.

Make sure you are selecting the correct network name. Nearby hotspots can look similar, especially in a busy location.

The tablet asks for a password repeatedly

  1. Open the phone’s hotspot settings and read the current password directly from the screen.
  2. On the tablet, forget or remove the saved network if it has an old password, then select the hotspot again.
  3. Enter the displayed password carefully and try once more.

Changing the hotspot password on the phone means every previously connected device must use the new one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tablet connects but has no internet

  1. Test mobile data on the phone itself with Wi-Fi disconnected.
  2. If the phone cannot load a page, move to a location with usable cellular coverage or resolve the phone’s mobile-data issue first.
  3. Confirm that the phone’s mobile-data setting is on.
  4. Check the plan for tethering eligibility, a used hotspot allowance, or a carrier restriction.
  5. Turn the hotspot off and on, then reconnect the tablet.

A tablet showing a Wi-Fi connection only proves that the local link to the phone exists. It does not prove that the phone has a working cellular data path.

The connection drops during use

  • Plug the phone into power for a long session.
  • Move the phone to a location with better cellular reception.
  • Keep the phone and tablet together and avoid placing the phone where its signal is obstructed.
  • Check whether the carrier applies a hotspot limit after a certain amount of data.
  • Reconnect after restarting the phone’s hotspot and the tablet’s Wi-Fi.

If the phone itself repeatedly loses mobile data in the same location, the tablet hotspot cannot be made reliable there without another internet source or better coverage.

Use the right connection decision

When 5G is unavailable, follow this order:

  1. Test the phone’s cellular data. If it does not work, a hotspot cannot solve the problem.
  2. Confirm LTE or another usable mobile-data service is available. The phone may use LTE automatically when 5G is absent.
  3. Verify tethering eligibility. Check the carrier’s plan details for hotspot support, limits, and charges.
  4. Enable the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot. Use Personal Hotspot on iPhone or Hotspot in Android Quick Settings.
  5. Join from the tablet’s Wi-Fi settings. Select the phone’s network and enter the displayed password.
  6. Test the internet and manage the session. Keep the phone powered for long use, monitor data, and turn tethering off when finished.

If these steps work, the absence of 5G is not itself a problem. The deciding factors are a usable phone data connection—often LTE—carrier permission, and a functioning Wi-Fi link between the two devices.
