How to Use a Phone as a Webcam With a USB Capture Card

You can use a phone as a webcam with a USB capture card only when the phone can send its camera view as HDMI video. The working chain is phone → model-compatible HDMI adapter → HDMI cable → HDMI-to-USB capture card → computer. In OBS, add the card as a Video Capture Device. The capture card converts an HDMI signal; it cannot create HDMI output on a phone that does not support it, and many phones mirror their entire screen rather than providing a clean camera-only feed.

What this setup does—and what it cannot do

A USB capture card is a bridge between an HDMI video source and software on your computer. Your phone supplies the video over HDMI, the card receives that signal through its HDMI input, and the card presents it to the operating system as a camera-like device over USB. OBS can then use it as a source. OBS describes its Video Capture Device source as supporting “a variety of video devices, including but not limited to webcams and capture cards.”

The important boundary is the phone. A capture card does not add display output to a USB-C or Lightning connector. The exact phone model must support video output, the adapter must support that model and connector, and the camera application must actually show the desired feed on the external display path. Display-output support alone does not prove that the camera app will expose a clean camera image.

Some phones simply mirror the phone’s display. That can include camera controls, notifications, or the home screen. A few camera applications offer an external-display or clean-feed mode, but there is no universal mode that works across all phones. Verify the behavior of your exact phone and app before buying hardware.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check compatibility before spending money

Confirm HDMI video output from the exact phone

Look up the phone model’s official display-output support and test it with an HDMI display if possible. Do not infer support from the shape of the connector: a USB-C port can be used only for charging and data on one phone and support video output on another. The same warning applies to adapters advertised as universal.

Open the camera application you intend to use while the phone is connected to an HDMI display. Confirm that the external screen shows a live camera image and note whether it mirrors the complete phone interface. Test the front and rear cameras, orientation changes, and any resolution setting you plan to use. An app can behave differently from the phone’s normal desktop or video-player output.

Identify the connector and adapter family

Lightning iPhones use a Lightning-to-HDMI AV path. USB-C iPhones that support external displays can use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Android phones require a model-compatible USB-C video adapter; many USB-C phones do not support HDMI output at all. Apple’s adapter guidance is model dependent and warns that some apps may not work through an AV adapter, so treat the manufacturer’s compatibility list as a requirement rather than a suggestion.

Check for a clean camera feed, not just a picture

When the phone mirrors its screen, the capture card will faithfully capture that mirror. That may be acceptable for a demonstration, but it is usually unsuitable for a webcam because controls and notifications remain visible. Search the camera app’s own documentation for an external-display, HDMI, or clean-output setting. If the app has no such option, plan for a mirrored image or choose a software webcam method instead.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Understand protected-content limits

HDCP can prevent protected films, shows, and streaming applications from appearing through a capture path. Apple notes that some protected content requires HDCP-compatible equipment. A phone-to-display connection that works for the camera app should not be treated as permission or a guarantee that protected video can be captured.

Hardware checklist

Item What to verify Why it matters
Phone Exact model supports HDMI display output; camera app shows the desired external feed The card cannot compensate for a phone that does not output video
AV adapter Correct connector and model support; HDMI output rather than VGA; charging or power pass-through if needed An incompatible adapter produces no signal, and VGA adapters do not carry HDMI audio
HDMI cable Connects the adapter’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input Capture inputs are directional; plugging into an HDMI output will not work
USB capture card HDMI input, computer OS support, required drivers, and an exposed UVC or DirectShow device OBS can list only devices that the operating system and driver expose
Computer USB port compatible with the card and software capable of selecting its video and audio interfaces The card must be recognized before OBS can use it
Power source Adapter or phone can be charged during operation; pass-through specifications are explicit Long sessions can otherwise end when the phone battery is depleted

Official products illustrate the categories but are not universal compatibility endorsements. IOGEAR’s GUV302P UpStream Mobile Capture Adapter is described for HDMI sources and Android smartphones. ATEN’s CAMLIVE UC3020 is an HDMI-to-USB-C UVC capture device. Check the current specifications, supported operating systems, connector requirements, and maximum formats for any model before purchase.

Connect the phone to the capture card

  1. Test the phone’s output first. Connect the phone to an HDMI display with the appropriate adapter. Launch the camera app and confirm that the external display shows a live image. If the display stays blank, stop here and resolve phone or adapter compatibility before adding a capture card.
  2. Attach the model-matched AV adapter. Plug a Lightning adapter into a supported Lightning iPhone, or a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter into a phone that explicitly supports USB-C display output. Follow the adapter maker’s power instructions. Some adapters need external power for reliable operation or to charge the phone while it is in use.
  3. Connect HDMI in the correct direction. Run an HDMI cable from the adapter’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input. Do not use the card’s USB connector as an HDMI input; USB is the computer-facing connection.
  4. Connect the card to the computer. Plug the capture card into a compatible USB port. Allow the operating system to finish detecting it and install any required driver. If the card has status indicators, wait for a stable connection before opening OBS.
  5. Keep the phone awake and framed. Disable auto-lock for the session if the camera app would otherwise stop output. Set the phone on a stable mount, choose the desired camera, and orient it before starting your call or stream. These are operational precautions; they do not change the signal format.

Configure the capture card in OBS

  1. Open the OBS scene that will contain the phone feed.
  2. In the Sources panel, select +, then choose Video Capture Device. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  3. In the device list, choose the name of the USB capture card. On Windows, the card must expose DirectShow output; OBS notes that major capture cards generally support DirectShow, but device options vary.
  4. Start with the device’s default resolution and frame rate. If the image is stable, open the format controls and select a resolution and frame rate that the phone, adapter, card, and computer all support. An unavailable combination will be rejected or may produce a blank image.
  5. Choose the correct color, buffering, and exposure options only when the card exposes them. OBS can display different controls for different hardware, so do not assume that a setting shown in one card’s guide exists on another.
  6. Resize and crop the source in the preview. If the phone is mirroring its screen, cropping can hide some interface elements, but it cannot turn a mirrored feed into a true clean camera output.
  7. Use Start Recording for a short test. Check framing, focus, motion, and lip-sync before joining a meeting or starting a broadcast.

If the card is certified or listed by OBS, use that list as one selection signal. OBS’s certified-device criteria include native OBS compatibility and checks related to latency and performance; certification is still not proof that a particular phone-and-adapter combination will output a camera feed.

Configure audio separately

HDMI can carry audio, but the result depends on the camera application, AV adapter, HDMI path, and capture card. In OBS, inspect the capture source’s audio setting and meters while the phone is producing sound. Some cards expose HDMI audio as part of the video device; others require a separate audio source or offer no usable audio interface.

For dependable speech, select a separate microphone in OBS or in the meeting application and monitor its level. Keep only one active microphone path when possible to avoid an echo caused by the phone and computer microphones being open at the same time. Apple specifically notes that VGA adapters do not carry audio, so a VGA-based path is not a substitute for HDMI when sound is required.

Troubleshoot common failures

No signal on the display or in OBS

  • Confirm that the exact phone model supports HDMI display output; a USB-C connector alone proves nothing.
  • Reconnect the AV adapter and make sure its HDMI socket is an output.
  • Check that the cable runs from the adapter to the capture card’s HDMI input, not to an output.
  • Test the adapter and phone on a normal HDMI display. If that fails, the capture card is not the first problem to solve.
  • In OBS, reopen the Video Capture Device properties and select the capture card explicitly rather than leaving an unrelated camera selected.
  • Check the card’s operating-system support and driver requirements. On Windows, verify that it provides DirectShow output.

The phone screen appears instead of a camera-only image

This is normal mirroring behavior for many phones. Look for an external-display or clean-output option inside the camera app. If none exists, decide whether a cropped mirror is acceptable. Otherwise, use a software webcam route that sends the camera stream directly instead of HDMI.

OBS does not list the card

Disconnect other capture devices temporarily, reconnect the card, and allow the operating system to enumerate it. Confirm that the USB cable and port carry data, not power only. Recheck the card’s driver and OS requirements, then restart OBS after the device appears in the operating system. A card that does not expose a supported video interface cannot be selected in OBS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protected video is blank

HDCP-protected films, shows, and streaming apps may intentionally block capture. Do not assume that a successful camera test means protected content is capturable. Use the phone’s camera output for the webcam purpose and respect the application’s protection requirements.

Video works but audio is missing

Verify that the adapter is HDMI-capable, not VGA, and inspect the capture source’s audio selection in OBS. Test a separate computer microphone. If HDMI audio is not exposed by the card, no OBS checkbox can create it; use an independent audio input.

The picture is unstable or an option is unavailable

Return to the default format in the Video Capture Device properties. The phone, adapter, card, and USB connection must agree on a supported resolution and frame rate. Apply one change at a time and record a short test after each change. If a format disappears when the phone camera changes orientation, select a mode common to both orientations.

Decision point Questions to ask Practical consequence
Computer compatibility Does the manufacturer list your operating system and USB connection? An unsupported driver can keep the card out of OBS
Video interface Does it accept HDMI input and expose UVC or DirectShow output? OBS needs an operating-system video device, not merely an HDMI socket
Formats Which resolutions and frame rates are actually available to the computer? The phone and card must share at least one stable format
Audio Does the card expose HDMI audio, and how is it selected? You may still need a separate microphone
Power Does the phone adapter or card provide charging or HDMI pass-through? Pass-through can make long sessions practical
Latency and performance Are native OBS compatibility and latency behavior documented? Lower delay is useful for monitoring and live conversation
Physical layout Are HDMI input, USB connector, and cables accessible on your desk? A compact layout reduces accidental cable strain and disconnections

Use the manufacturer’s current specification sheet and OBS’s certified-device information as starting points. Neither source replaces testing the exact phone, camera app, adapter, and card together.

When a capture card is the wrong solution

If your goal is simply to use the phone camera in a meeting or recording application, HDMI hardware may be unnecessary. OBS’s smartphone guide lists software options such as Camo, which can connect over USB or Wi-Fi, and EpocCam for iOS. These methods avoid the HDMI adapter and capture card, although they introduce their own app, network, driver, and privacy considerations.

Google documents a direct USB webcam mode for Pixel phones. It uses a data-capable USB cable and works with hosts that support the USB Video Class (UVC) standard. When your phone and computer support that mode, the phone can appear as a webcam without an HDMI conversion stage.

Choose the HDMI route when you need an HDMI-based production chain, want OBS to receive a conventional capture source, or have already confirmed a clean external camera feed. Choose direct USB or software webcam methods when simplicity, fewer cables, and meeting use matter more than HDMI integration.

A repeatable pre-session checklist

  • Phone model and connector match the AV adapter.
  • The camera app’s live image appears on an HDMI display.
  • The image is clean enough for your use, or you have accepted the mirrored interface.
  • HDMI cable runs into the capture card’s HDMI input.
  • The card appears in the operating system and in OBS as a Video Capture Device.
  • Resolution and frame rate are set to a mode all components support.
  • Audio meters move, or a separate microphone is selected.
  • Phone charging or pass-through power is available for the full session.
  • A short OBS recording confirms framing, focus, motion, and audio before you go live.

Bottom line

A phone can become an OBS webcam through a USB capture card when—and only when—the phone and camera app provide a usable HDMI camera feed. Verify that capability first, match the AV adapter to the exact model, connect HDMI to the card’s input, select the card as OBS’s Video Capture Device, and test audio independently. If the phone offers no suitable HDMI output, a direct USB webcam mode or software webcam application is the more reliable path.
