How to Use a Phone as a Mouse and Keyboard for a Chromebook

Short answer: ChromeOS does not provide a documented way to turn an Android phone into a Chromebook mouse and keyboard. Phone Hub connects your phone for notifications, photos, messages, tethering and unlocking, but not cursor or text control. Google also states that a phone cannot be paired with a Chromebook over Bluetooth. For dependable control, use a compatible Bluetooth mouse, keyboard or keyboard with an integrated touchpad. KDE Connect advertises remote input on supported computers, but ChromeOS support is not established.

What you can and cannot do

People usually ask this question because the Chromebook’s trackpad or keyboard is unavailable, damaged, inconvenient, or being used by someone else. A phone seems like an obvious substitute: its touchscreen could act as a trackpad, while its on-screen keyboard could enter text. On a Chromebook, however, the ordinary phone-connection features and the Bluetooth pairing system do not provide that function.

  • Phone Hub: Google documents phone notifications, recent photos, messages, tethering and some unlocking features. The documented feature set does not include moving the Chromebook pointer or typing into ChromeOS from the phone.
  • Bluetooth: Google Chromebook Help says, “You can’t pair your phone to your Chromebook with Bluetooth.” Compatible Chromebooks can pair with Bluetooth keyboards and mice, but a phone is not treated as one of those peripherals in the normal pairing flow.
  • Third-party remote-input software: Some applications advertise a phone touchpad or keyboard. KDE Connect is one example, but its documentation and app listing do not establish that its remote-input functions control the ChromeOS desktop.

That distinction matters. A phone can be connected to a Chromebook without becoming an input device. If you need a solution that should work without an unsupported workaround, choose a compatible Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, or combined keyboard-and-touchpad device.

Phone Hub: useful phone integration, not a remote trackpad

Phone Hub is ChromeOS’s built-in connection between a Chromebook and an Android phone. Google’s documented uses include viewing phone notifications, accessing recent photos, handling messages, sharing a phone’s mobile connection and using certain unlock features. Those functions are designed to make the two devices cooperate; they are not a remote desktop or input protocol.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Requirements for the documented connection

Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for the supported phone-connection features. These are compatibility requirements for Phone Hub and related connected-phone functions. They are not requirements that enable mouse or keyboard emulation.

How to connect the phone for Phone Hub features

  1. On the Chromebook, open Settings and go to the section for connected devices or the Android phone connection.
  2. Choose the option to set up or connect an Android phone, then follow the on-screen pairing and account prompts.
  3. After setup, use the available Phone Hub controls for notifications, photos, messages, tethering or unlocking.

ChromeOS labels can change between releases and managed-school or work devices can hide some options. Regardless of the exact label, completing this setup does not add a phone-controlled cursor or text field. If your goal is input, Phone Hub is the wrong tool even when the connection succeeds.

Why the normal Bluetooth method fails

Bluetooth is the route many people try first because a phone-side app may claim to behave like a wireless mouse. The Chromebook’s official pairing rules are the limiting factor: Google explicitly says that a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook with Bluetooth. The same guidance separately identifies keyboards and mice as compatible Bluetooth accessories for supported Chromebooks.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What you will see in Chromebook settings

  1. Open Settings and select Bluetooth (or the Bluetooth control in the system tray).
  2. Turn Bluetooth on and choose the command to pair a new device.
  3. Put the intended accessory into pairing mode and select it when it appears.

A phone running a “mouse,” “trackpad” or “keyboard” application is still a phone from ChromeOS’s perspective. It is not automatically converted into one of the peripheral categories that the Chromebook pairing flow supports. The phone may remain invisible, appear without a usable input profile, or fail during pairing. Repeating the scan, changing the phone’s Bluetooth name or installing another phone-side app cannot override that platform rule.

Do not confuse Bluetooth with other connections

USB tethering, Wi-Fi hotspot use and Phone Hub can give the Chromebook network access or phone-related features. None of those connections carries the phone’s touchscreen gestures as Chromebook pointer events or turns its on-screen keyboard into ChromeOS keyboard events. A network connection is not the same thing as a remote-input channel.

KDE Connect and similar apps: a conditional, unverified route

KDE Connect’s Android listing advertises a virtual touchpad and says that a computer companion application is required. Its project documentation discusses support for Linux desktop environments. That is evidence that remote input exists for supported computer setups, but it is not confirmation that a Chromebook’s ChromeOS desktop can be controlled this way.

Why Chromebook support is uncertain

Chromebooks can provide a Linux development environment, but Google describes that environment as sandboxed. Linux applications run inside that environment rather than automatically gaining control of the ChromeOS desktop, system cursor or every ChromeOS window. The available documentation does not confirm that KDE Connect’s Linux-side remote-input service can cross that boundary.

How to treat this option

  • Consider it an experiment only if you are comfortable with Linux applications, local-network permissions and troubleshooting.
  • Install both the phone application and the required computer companion only from sources you trust, and check that the versions support the same features.
  • Do not assume that installing the Linux environment, pairing the devices or seeing a connected status proves that ChromeOS pointer and keyboard control will work.
  • Do not rely on this route for an exam, presentation, accessibility need or any situation where input must be dependable.

There is no verified ChromeOS procedure in the available documentation that can be presented as a guaranteed step-by-step fix. If the experiment does not produce pointer movement and text entry in ChromeOS applications, the limitation is compatibility rather than a missing Phone Hub setting.

Reliable replacement: pair a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse

Google’s supported Bluetooth categories include keyboards and mice for compatible Chromebooks. This is the practical answer when the built-in keyboard or trackpad cannot be used. A keyboard with an integrated touchpad is especially useful when you need both text entry and pointer control but want to carry only one accessory.

Before you start

  • Confirm that the Chromebook has Bluetooth and that it is enabled.
  • Charge the accessory or install its batteries.
  • Put the keyboard or mouse into its pairing mode; the exact button or key combination is determined by the accessory.
  • Keep the accessory close to the Chromebook during setup.

Pair the accessory

  1. Open the Chromebook’s Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth and switch it on if necessary.
  3. Choose the option to pair or add a new device.
  4. Select the keyboard or mouse from the list.
  5. If ChromeOS displays a keyboard code, type that code on the physical keyboard and press Enter. Complete any confirmation prompt shown for the device.
  6. Test typing in a blank browser tab and move the pointer across the screen before relying on the accessory.

Pairing a mouse alone will not provide a keyboard, and pairing a keyboard alone will not provide pointer movement. If you need both functions, use both devices or select the integrated-touchpad category. Compatibility can vary by Chromebook model, ChromeOS policy and the accessory’s Bluetooth profile, so verify operation before discarding another input method.

Phone-as-input alternatives compared

Troubleshooting by symptom

“My phone does not appear in Bluetooth devices”

This is expected under Google’s stated pairing rule. Confirm that you are trying to pair a keyboard or mouse rather than the phone itself. A phone-side emulation app does not change the Chromebook’s supported Bluetooth device categories.

“Phone Hub connects, but I cannot move the cursor”

That is normal. Phone Hub’s documented features do not include remote pointer control. Use the connection for its supported phone features and use a physical input accessory for the cursor.

“KDE Connect says the devices are connected, but ChromeOS does not respond”

A connected status does not establish ChromeOS desktop control. Check that the computer companion is running and that both devices are on the same permitted network, but treat failure to control ChromeOS as an unverified compatibility boundary rather than a setting that Google documents how to fix.

“The Bluetooth keyboard or mouse will not pair”

  1. Charge the accessory or replace its batteries.
  2. Turn the accessory off and back on, then re-enter pairing mode.
  3. In Chromebook Bluetooth settings, remove an old entry for that accessory if one exists, then try pairing again.
  4. Move other Bluetooth devices away temporarily and keep the accessory near the Chromebook.
  5. Check whether a school or workplace administrator restricts Bluetooth peripherals.
  6. Try another known-compatible keyboard or mouse to determine whether the problem is the accessory or the Chromebook.

If an accessory pairs but disconnects repeatedly, charge it fully, remove unnecessary paired devices and check for ChromeOS updates that your device is allowed to install. If the Chromebook has no working internal input and Bluetooth is disabled by policy or hardware, a wired USB keyboard or mouse may be the next practical fallback, provided the Chromebook has a compatible port and supports that accessory.

Accessibility and emergency-use considerations

A phone-controlled input method can sound attractive when reaching the Chromebook is difficult or when a built-in trackpad has failed. The uncertainty around phone input on ChromeOS makes it unsuitable as the only accessibility plan. Arrange a supported physical keyboard, mouse or integrated-touchpad keyboard in advance if you depend on reliable input.

For a short emergency session, you can use Phone Hub to access messages or tethering while obtaining an accessory elsewhere, but those features do not substitute for text and pointer control. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator which Bluetooth and USB peripherals are allowed before purchasing or borrowing one.

Bottom line

There is no Google-documented method that turns an Android phone into both a mouse and keyboard for a Chromebook. Phone Hub is for connected-phone features, and Google’s Bluetooth guidance rules out pairing the phone itself. KDE Connect offers a possible remote-input experiment for supported computers, but ChromeOS desktop compatibility is unverified. For reliable cursor and text control, pair a compatible Bluetooth mouse and keyboard—or choose a keyboard with an integrated touchpad.
