How to Use a Linode Object Storage Bucket for Videos in a YouTube Livestream

Use a Linode Object Storage bucket to store video files, then use OBS to play them and send the resulting live program to YouTube. The bucket is storage—not a live encoder or YouTube ingest point. You’ll need the correct endpoint for your bucket, an access method OBS can use, and a test broadcast before you rely on the setup.

What the bucket does—and what it doesn’t

Linode Object Storage, now called Akamai Cloud Object Storage, is an S3-compatible service for storing objects such as video files. Akamai says it supports SDKs, open-source projects, and other services built on the Amazon S3 API (Akamai Cloud Object Storage documentation).

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

In this workflow, OBS retrieves and plays the video, combines it with any other scene sources, and sends the outgoing stream to YouTube. YouTube does not fetch and broadcast the file directly from your bucket. Object Storage’s suitability for storing media does not guarantee uninterrupted playback, a particular bitrate, or low latency.

Set up the bucket and find its endpoint

  1. Create or select a bucket. Choose the region where you want to store the video. Object Storage uses buckets to organize objects, and endpoint hostnames vary by region and endpoint type.
  2. Copy the endpoint shown for your bucket. Find it in Cloud Manager or retrieve it through the API. Do not assume an endpoint from another tutorial matches your bucket. Akamai’s documentation explains bucket access and endpoints (Object Storage guides).
  3. Upload the video. Akamai documents Cloud Manager, Linode CLI, s3cmd, and Cyberduck as options for managing buckets and objects (Object Storage documentation). Confirm the uploaded object’s name and location before configuring playback.

Choose a safe way for OBS to access the video

Objects are private by default. A private object URL does not give an unauthenticated playback client permission to read the file. Decide how OBS or its playback source will obtain access before adding the URL.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Public-readable object: Use only if making the video publicly accessible is acceptable. Anyone who obtains a public object URL may be able to request it.
  • Temporary signed URL: This can grant time-limited access without making the object public, but use it only if the selected playback client handles the URL and its expiry period suits your stream.
  • Authenticated S3-compatible workflow: Use a client or download/sync process that can authenticate to Object Storage rather than putting credentials in a URL.

Never put a secret access key in an OBS scene URL, browser overlay, screen share, or live broadcast. Akamai warns that a secret key is shown only once when created; save it securely at that time and avoid granting broader permissions than the workflow needs (Manage access keys).

Add the video to OBS

For one video: Media Source

  1. Open OBS and select the scene that should contain the video.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
  3. Use a local file if you have staged the video on the computer running OBS. If you are testing a remote object URL, enter it only through a playback setup that supports the URL and access method you chose.
  4. Check the source’s playback options, including whether it should restart when the source becomes active and whether it should loop. Confirm the video’s audio is enabled if you want it in the program mix.
  5. Preview the scene and confirm that the video starts, plays through as expected, and has audible audio if applicable.

For an ordered or looping playlist: VLC Video Source

OBS documents VLC Video Source for playlists; VLC must be installed for the source to appear. Add the source from the Sources panel, then configure the playlist and looping behavior in its properties. Test each item and transitions in the scene before streaming. Consult the current OBS source documentation for the available controls (OBS Media Sources).

OBS documentation describes network caching, but it does not certify every S3-compatible object URL, access configuration, or video codec. Treat direct URL playback as something to verify with your exact file and endpoint, not as a guaranteed feature. If it fails or stalls, use an S3-capable download or sync step to stage the file locally, then play that local copy in OBS.

Configure and test the YouTube stream

  1. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, use Settings > Stream to connect the YouTube account or enter the stream details supplied by YouTube. Keep the stream key private; do not show it on screen or share it.
  2. Check the output and audio. In Settings > Output, choose an encoder and bitrate appropriate to your connection and YouTube’s current guidance. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. Make sure the audio source is routed to the stream and is not muted.
  3. Run a private test. Use YouTube’s private or unlisted test options where appropriate, and stream for several minutes. Watch both the OBS preview and YouTube’s live control room for playback, audio, dropped frames, and ingest warnings. OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing for a few minutes before a first stream (OBS Quick Start).
  4. Confirm behavior over time. For a long broadcast, test the whole playlist cycle or enough playback to reveal expired signed URLs, buffering, source restarts, or audio that drifts or stops.

For stream settings, follow YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected resolution and frame rate; the Object Storage and OBS sources cited here do not establish a universal bitrate or keyframe value. Also check that you have the rights to use the video and audio, and that the content complies with YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies. Storage access does not grant copyright permission.

Direct URL playback or local staging?

Route What to evaluate
Play the object URL in OBS or VLC Whether the object can be read without exposing credentials; whether the client supports the URL and file codec; startup, buffering, and playlist behavior on your network.
Download or sync the object, then play locally Whether you have enough local disk space and time to stage the file; whether local playback gives you a useful fallback if remote access or network delivery fails.

These are decision factors, not measured performance results. A public URL may be simpler but exposes the object to public access; a private workflow needs a supported authentication path. Choose based on access control and observed playback in your own test.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS cannot open the URL: Check the exact bucket endpoint, object path, and whether the object is private. Confirm the client supports the access method. Try downloading or syncing the file locally as a diagnostic.
  • The video starts, then buffers or stops: Check the computer’s network connection and test whether the source remains readable for the full playback period. Network caching may help in some cases, but it is not a delivery guarantee. Test local staging if remote playback is unreliable.
  • The VLC source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the Sources panel again.
  • The video plays but has no sound: Check the media source’s audio setting and OBS’s audio mixer meters. Confirm the correct audio track is enabled and not muted.
  • A signed URL stops working: Its access period may have expired. Generate a URL valid for the planned test or broadcast duration, if your client supports signed URLs, or use another supported access method.
  • The stream key or access key was exposed: Replace or revoke the exposed credential promptly. Do not rely on deleting a scene or hiding a screen share as the only response.
  • YouTube reports stream problems: Check OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators, then verify the output settings against YouTube’s current guidance and repeat a private test.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than learning or maintaining an OBS setup, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
