To use a laptop as a monitor without a capture card, try Windows’ built-in Wireless Display feature if both computers support it. If they do not, network-display software such as spacedesk can send a Windows desktop to a laptop over a local network. Neither method turns a laptop’s HDMI port into a video input; check your exact model’s specifications before attempting a wired connection.

First decide whether you want to duplicate the source screen or extend the desktop. Windows calls these modes Duplicate and Extend: Duplicate shows the same content on both screens, while Extend gives you additional desktop space. Set up Windows Wireless Display
Use this route when both computers have compatible wireless display support. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 11; the exact controls and compatibility can vary with Windows version and hardware.

- On the source Windows PC: open its wireless display connection controls and select the receiving laptop.
- Choose Duplicate to show the same image on both computers, or Extend to use the laptop as extra desktop space.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Miracast support on both computers, confirming Wi-Fi is on, ensuring the receiving PC has the Wireless Display app or optional feature, and updating relevant drivers and firmware if the connection fails. Try network-display software if wireless projection is unavailable
spacedesk describes a setup in which a primary Windows machine runs its driver/server software and a second machine runs viewer software. Its manual says the desktop can be extended or duplicated to another machine over TCP/IP. The site and manual list Windows PCs and laptops among viewer devices; check the current requirements for both machines before installing: spacedesk, Introduction and Setup, and System Requirements.

These are the vendor’s relative descriptions, not independent measurements or quantified latency results. The software route avoids a capture card, but the experience depends on the devices and network; the cited materials do not establish a particular latency or image quality.

Know when a Miracast adapter helps
A Miracast adapter is for an HDMI TV, monitor, or projector that does not have Miracast built in. It plugs into that display’s HDMI input and uses USB for power; the source PC then connects through Windows wireless display controls. This adapter is not a way to add HDMI input to a laptop. Nor should you assume that an HDMI cable alone will send one laptop’s screen into another: verify the exact receiving laptop’s manufacturer specifications for video input before relying on a wired setup. The cited Microsoft guidance documents software projection and display receiving; it does not establish a universal HDMI-input rule for laptops.
Troubleshoot a laptop that does not appear
- Check that both computers support the wireless display route, rather than assuming any Windows laptop can receive a projection.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the relevant devices.
- On the target laptop, confirm the Wireless Display optional feature or app is installed if Windows requests it.
- Update relevant device drivers and firmware, then try connecting again.
- If wireless projection is not available, check the current primary/viewer requirements for network-display software and confirm that both machines can communicate over the chosen network.
These checks follow Microsoft’s wireless-display troubleshooting guidance; network-display compatibility and requirements should be checked in the software’s current documentation.

Windows version and support
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If either computer still runs Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and support information rather than assuming it continues to receive ordinary free updates. Setup instructions and feature availability may also differ by Windows edition and version.
