Stop using it and contact a dermatologist if your scalp becomes dry, scaly, itchy, red, or irritated. “Hair-growth serum” can also mean a cosmetic product with different ingredients, so do not assume minoxidil instructions apply to it.
First, identify what kind of serum you have
Minoxidil is a medication with product-specific directions and warnings. A cosmetic hair serum may use different ingredients and have different application instructions. Check the active ingredient and the product label before applying anything; follow the cosmetic serum’s own directions rather than borrowing a minoxidil dose or schedule.

If you are considering minoxidil, use a product intended for your situation and read its full label. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises applying it to a dry scalp. Its guidance describes minoxidil as a treatment for pattern hair loss, not a universal answer for every cause of shedding. AAD: female pattern hair loss; AAD: male pattern hair loss.
How to apply topical minoxidil
- Check that the scalp is suitable for application. Do not apply the cited OTC foam to a red, inflamed, infected, irritated, or painful scalp; its label says not to use it in these circumstances. - Start with a dry scalp. If you have shampooed, towel-dry as directed by the cited foam label. The AAD likewise says to apply minoxidil to a dry scalp.
- Expose the target area. Part your hair so you can reach the scalp where the product is intended to be used. Apply the labeled amount directly to the scalp, not simply over the hair. The cited women’s 5% foam label specifies once-daily use, but that schedule is for that product only.
- Follow the exact dose and frequency on your own label. Directions vary: the cited men’s 5% solution label specifies 1 mL twice daily, while the cited women’s 5% foam specifies once daily. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable advice. Do not apply extra or use it more often to try to speed results; the cited solution label says that doing so will not improve results. - Wash your hands after application. Avoid spreading minoxidil to your face or other body areas. The cited foam label tells users to wash their hands and surfaces; the AAD advises applying only to the scalp and washing the face after use to help limit unwanted facial hair.
Foam or solution: compare labels, not just formats
The AAD says newer foam seems to reduce the risk of scalp irritation for men. “Seems” matters: foam is not irritation-proof, and the available guidance does not establish that every foam is safer than every solution. Irritation and redness warnings also appear on OTC solution labels.

What to do if your scalp gets irritated
Minoxidil-related scalp irritation can include dryness, scaling, itching, or redness. If any of these develop, the AAD advises stopping minoxidil and seeing a dermatologist. Do not try to push through the irritation or cover it by adding other active products.

Some minoxidil labels also warn users to stop and seek medical advice for symptoms such as chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet. When to get a diagnosis before self-treating
Arrange clinical advice if hair loss is sudden or patchy, you do not know its cause, or your scalp is visibly inflamed or irritated. Different causes of hair loss can look alike and may require different treatment; an AAD dermatologist can help distinguish them. Minoxidil has specific pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions: the AAD advises women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding to avoid it. Minoxidil is not an immediate fix. The AAD says results commonly take about six to twelve months, and the benefit is lost if treatment is stopped. Its female-pattern hair-loss guidance also describes temporary increased shedding during the first two to eight weeks of treatment; that early shedding is not the same thing as scalp irritation.
