How to Use a Downloaded Song as Your Samsung Galaxy Ringtone

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

To set a downloaded ringtone on a Samsung Galaxy, save the audio file directly on the phone, then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Tap Add (the plus icon), choose the file, optionally enable Play selected highlights only, and tap Done. A dual-SIM phone may ask whether you want to change the ringtone for SIM 1 or SIM 2. Menu names and placement can differ by Galaxy model, region, and software version.

What you need before choosing a ringtone

The audio must exist as a file stored on the Galaxy phone itself. Samsung’s guidance does not treat a song that is merely available through a streaming service as a selectable ringtone. An offline track cached inside a streaming app is still controlled by that service, so it is not the same as a purchased or directly downloaded audio file.

Start by checking where the file actually lives. A completed download in the phone’s storage can be selected. A link in a browser, an attachment that is still downloading, or a song visible only inside a cloud-storage app is not necessarily available to Samsung’s ringtone picker. If you copied the file from another device, make sure the copy finished and that you can open it from the Galaxy’s storage before changing the ringtone.

Supported audio formats

Samsung UK lists these sound formats as supported for phone audio:

Format Can be selected according to Samsung’s support guidance? What to do
MP3 Yes Store the file on the phone and select it from the ringtone picker.
WMA Yes Store the file locally, then add it from the ringtone screen.
AAC Yes Store the file locally, then add it from the ringtone screen.
FLAC Yes Store the file locally, then add it from the ringtone screen.
M4A Not directly, according to the cited Samsung UK guidance Convert it to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC before trying to add it.

Samsung’s wording is specific: its phones support MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC, while M4A files need to be converted to one of those formats. Conversion does not give you permission to use a recording. Use an audio file you own or are allowed to use. Do not expect a protected download or a streaming-service cache to appear in Samsung’s file picker.

Keep the original file until the converted copy has been tested. If the converted file is not listed, confirm that the conversion created a real audio file rather than simply changing the filename extension. Renaming .m4a to .mp3, for example, does not change the underlying format.

Decide which ringtone behavior you want

  • One ringtone for incoming calls: change the main Ringtone setting. This applies the chosen sound generally unless an individual contact has its own ringtone.
  • A ringtone for one person: edit that contact and assign a separate sound.
  • Different sounds for two phone numbers: on a dual-SIM Galaxy, choose the SIM whose ringtone you are changing when Samsung asks.
  • Song beginning or a highlight: leave Play selected highlights only off to start at the beginning, or turn it on to let Samsung use a selected portion.

These are choices within Samsung’s settings, not separate apps or accessories. You do not need a special speaker, cable, headphones, or ringtone purchase to complete the setup; you need a compatible local audio file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a downloaded file as the general ringtone

  1. Put the audio file on the Galaxy phone. Download it directly to the device or copy it to the device’s storage. If the file remains only on a computer, cloud service, or streaming app, the ringtone picker cannot use it until a compatible local copy is present.
  2. Open the ringtone settings. Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. The exact wording can vary slightly by model and software version, but the setting is in the Sounds and vibration area.
  3. Choose a SIM when prompted. On a dual-SIM phone, select SIM 1 or SIM 2. Samsung’s UK instructions indicate that a non-dual-SIM model shows only SIM 1, so seeing just one option is normal on that type of device.
  4. Open the local-file picker. Tap Add or the plus icon. Samsung may initially show a Tracks list containing audio it has indexed.
  5. Locate the file. If the song is not visible under Tracks, switch to Folders and browse to the directory where you saved it. Some versions also provide a search control on this selection screen. Search by the file name if you know it.
  6. Choose how the song starts. Enable Play selected highlights only if you want Samsung to use its selected section. Leave the option disabled when you want playback to begin at the start of the file.
  7. Save the choice. Tap Done. The selected file becomes the ringtone for the SIM you chose, or for the phone’s general incoming-call setting on a single-SIM device.

After tapping Done, return to the Ringtone screen and confirm that the selected name appears. This quick check distinguishes a saved setting from a selection that was canceled. Place a test call when practical, remembering that sound modes, routines, or call-app settings can suppress the result even when the file was accepted.

If the screen looks different, do not assume the feature is missing. Samsung publishes instructions by market, and the same control can move or use a slightly different label after a software update. Look for the Ringtone entry inside Sounds and vibration, then the add or plus control within the ringtone list.

Why a downloaded song may not appear

The file is not actually stored on the phone

A link to a song, an attachment that has not finished downloading, and a file visible only in a cloud app are not necessarily local audio files. Confirm that the complete file is saved in the Galaxy’s internal storage or an accessible storage location, then reopen the ringtone picker. If Samsung has not indexed it under Tracks, use Folders to browse directly.

Checking both views matters because the Tracks list is an indexed presentation, while Folders lets you navigate to the location yourself. If you recently downloaded the file, close and reopen the picker after the download completes. Use the picker’s search control when one is available, and search for the actual filename rather than the title shown by a music service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The format is M4A or another unsupported type

Samsung UK specifically says that M4A files need to be converted to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC for use on a Samsung phone. Convert the file using a method you trust, save the converted copy locally, and select that copy. Renaming an extension without actually converting the audio does not change its format and may leave it unselectable or silent.

If you have several copies, select the converted file rather than the original M4A. Keeping a clear filename can help you identify the correct copy in both Tracks and Folders. The format list is a compatibility specification, not a promise that every file with a matching extension is undamaged or audible.

The song belongs to a streaming service

Samsung’s support instructions distinguish a directly downloaded or purchased file from music played through a streaming service, with Spotify given as an example. A subscription or an offline download inside such an app does not create a normal ringtone file that Samsung can select. Use an independent, compatible audio file instead.

This limitation also explains why a song can play perfectly inside its music app yet be absent from the ringtone screen. Playback permission inside that app does not turn the track into a general-purpose file. Do not promise that an offline cache can be copied or selected as a ringtone; Samsung’s documented route calls for a purchased or directly downloaded file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are looking in the wrong view

The picker can present a Tracks view first. A file may not be indexed there even though it exists. Tap Folders, open the storage location, and select the file manually. If your version offers search, search for the complete or partial file name.

The phone uses different labels

Model, region, carrier software, and Android or One UI version can change the wording and order of controls. The supported workflow remains the same: open Sounds and vibration, enter Ringtone, use Add or the plus icon, select a local file, and confirm with Done. If your menu does not match, use the manual or Samsung support page for your exact model and market rather than following instructions for a different regional edition.

The file was selected but the setting did not persist

Return to the Ringtone screen after saving and check the displayed selection. If the phone has two SIMs, verify that you changed the intended SIM; changing SIM 1 does not necessarily change SIM 2. If you assigned a sound to a contact, check the contact card as well, because that contact-specific choice can take precedence over the general ringtone for calls from that person.

Assign a different ringtone to one contact

Samsung supports a contact-specific ringtone, so you can identify a caller without changing the sound used for everyone else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Phone or Contacts app and open the person’s contact card.
  2. Choose the control to edit the contact.
  3. If the ringtone field is hidden, reveal additional fields or tap the option for more contact information.
  4. Choose Ringtone.
  5. Select a built-in tone or use the control to add a local music file, then choose the file from the phone.
  6. Save the contact.

Depending on the Galaxy model and operating-system version, Samsung may require the contact to be saved on the mobile device for a personal ringtone option to be available. A contact synchronized from another account can therefore show fewer fields than a device-stored contact. If Ringtone is missing while editing, check where that contact is stored and move or save it on the phone if your device offers that choice.

A contact ringtone is useful when you want a quieter general sound but a recognizable tone for one caller. It does not replace the need for a local compatible file, and saving the contact is essential. If you leave the edit screen without saving, the personal assignment will not be retained.

General ringtone, contact ringtone, SIM ringtone, or song highlights?

Choice Where you make it Result
General ringtone Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone Sets the selected local file for incoming calls generally.
Contact ringtone Phone or Contacts > contact > Edit > Ringtone Uses a separate sound for that saved contact.
SIM-specific ringtone Ringtone settings after selecting SIM 1 or SIM 2 Changes the sound associated with the selected SIM on a dual-SIM phone.
Selected highlights The ringtone file-selection screen Plays Samsung’s selected portion instead of automatically starting at the beginning.

These settings can coexist. For example, you can set one downloaded file as the general ringtone, assign a different file to a contact, and choose a separate ringtone for each SIM on a dual-SIM model. The contact-specific assignment is the more specific choice for calls from that person.

Use the highlights option when you want a recognizable part of a long song without editing the file yourself. Turn it off when the beginning of the file is the part you want callers to hear. Samsung’s selected section is an automatic choice; the setting does not describe a full audio-editing tool.

When the selected ringtone does not sound

If the file was accepted but you hear no ringtone during an incoming call, work through Samsung’s troubleshooting order rather than immediately deleting the file.

  1. Check the calling app’s own sound settings. The app handling calls may have separate notification or call-sound controls. Review those settings if the problem occurs only for calls made through one app.
  2. Make sure Mute all sounds is off. Samsung identifies this accessibility sound setting as a possible reason that a chosen ringtone produces no audible output.
  3. Check Airplane mode. If Airplane mode is enabled, normal mobile calling may not arrive, making it appear that the ringtone is not working.
  4. Review modes and routines. A mode or routine can silence calls or change sound behavior according to location, time, or another trigger. Temporarily disable the relevant mode or routine and test again.
  5. Check Do not Disturb. This setting can suppress incoming-call sounds according to its schedule and exceptions.
  6. Restart the phone. A restart can clear a temporary audio or indexing problem after a file is added or a setting is changed.
  7. Use a factory reset only as a last resort. Samsung lists resetting the phone only after other troubleshooting has failed. Back up personal data first; a reset removes data and settings from the device.

If the ringtone works after selecting a built-in tone but not after selecting your file, revisit the file requirements: confirm that the copy is local and that it uses MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC. If no ringtone works, focus on the sound, mode, routine, and calling-app checks before replacing the file.

Test one known built-in ringtone when diagnosing the problem. A built-in tone that also stays silent points toward phone-wide sound controls rather than the downloaded file. A built-in tone that works while the downloaded tone does not points back to location, format, selection, or the file itself.

How regional and software differences affect the steps

Samsung’s US, UK, Hong Kong, and Austria support materials describe the same basic process but warn that screens and sequences vary. Samsung Hong Kong’s guidance is explicitly written for that market, and Samsung’s regional pages can reflect different device lineups and software releases. A UK support page updated June 5, 2026, lists the four supported formats and the M4A conversion requirement; other regional pages may use different examples or labels. Samsung Austria published related guidance updated September 19, 2026.

Use the instructions above as the common path, then match the final labels to your phone. In particular, check whether your device calls the control Add or shows only a plus icon, whether the picker calls its views Tracks and Folders, and whether a dual-SIM selection appears before or after the file list. If a control is absent, consult the manual or local Samsung support page for the exact model, country, and software version.

Regional instructions should not be mixed blindly. A Hong Kong support page may describe a model or sequence intended for that market, while a US or UK page may show another version of One UI. A quick checklist

  • The audio is a complete file saved directly on the Galaxy phone.
  • The file is MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC; an M4A file has been converted first.
  • You are not trying to use a streaming-service track or protected offline cache.
  • You opened Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
  • You selected the correct SIM if the phone has two SIMs.
  • You used Add or the plus icon, then checked both Tracks and Folders.
  • You selected Play selected highlights only only when you want Samsung’s highlighted section.
  • You tapped Done and saved any contact-specific change.
  • If no sound plays, you checked the calling app, Mute all sounds, Airplane mode, modes or routines, Do not Disturb, and then restarted the phone.
  • You checked the model-specific manual or regional Samsung support page when your labels or screen order differed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Spotify song as my Samsung ringtone?

Not directly. Samsung’s guidance says a streaming-service track, including an offline cache, is not the same as a purchased or directly downloaded audio file. Use a compatible local file instead.

Why isn’t my downloaded ringtone showing up?

Confirm that the complete file is stored on the phone, then check both Tracks and Folders in the picker. If it is an M4A file, convert it to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC first.

Which formats work as Samsung ringtones?

Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC. Its guidance says M4A files need conversion to one of those formats.

How do I set different ringtones for two SIMs?

Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, then choose SIM 1 or SIM 2 when prompted and add the local file for that SIM.

Can I set a ringtone for just one contact?

Yes. Edit the contact in Phone or Contacts, choose Ringtone, add or select a local audio file, and save. Some models require the contact to be stored on the phone.

Why is my selected ringtone silent?

Check the calling app’s sound controls, Mute all sounds, Airplane mode, modes and routines, and Do not Disturb. Restart the phone after checking those settings.
