How to Use a Digital Marketing Agency to Grow Your Business

A digital marketing agency can help your business expand by planning online campaigns, measuring whether they attract the right customers, and adjusting the work against goals you define. It cannot guarantee a particular growth rate: results depend on your offer, audience, budget, follow-up, and other factors. Start by deciding what “growth” means for your business, then choose an agency whose measurement and reporting fit that outcome.

Start with the business outcome, not the channel

Before discussing search ads, website traffic, or social campaigns, identify the business result you want. A goal might be more purchases, qualified inquiries, newsletter signups, relevant site visits, or greater awareness. These are different outcomes, so they call for different measures. Google Ads guidance recommends prioritizing campaign goals and choosing metrics that correspond to them.

Make the goal specific enough to evaluate. For example, “increase qualified requests for information” is more useful than “get more online activity.” Decide what counts as a qualified request, which records will confirm it, and how often you will review progress. These are practical planning steps, not a universal agency-selection standard.

Where an agency can contribute

Paid search and online advertising

An agency may organize campaigns around the products or services you sell and the intent behind a customer’s search. It can help shape ad messages and the landing-page path, then monitor clicks, search terms, and conversions. The point is not simply to maximize clicks: a click matters when it contributes to the business outcome you chose.

#1 Best Overall

Analytics and conversion tracking

Measurement can help distinguish activity from outcomes. In Google Ads guidance, a conversion is an action an advertiser values; examples include a purchase, newsletter signup, or request for information. Choose actions that make sense for your business model, and check that reported conversions correspond to reliable business records. If a lead is only valuable after qualification or a sale, website submissions alone may not tell the whole story.

Ongoing campaign improvement

Campaign data can inform changes to keywords, messages, audiences, landing pages, or budget allocation. An agency can use that feedback to test and refine its work, but this is an iterative process rather than a promise of success. The cited guidance describes goal-setting and measurement; it does not establish that any particular agency will cause a specific business result.

Lead follow-up

If campaigns generate inquiries or signups, the business needs a dependable way to handle them. A customer relationship management system or email-marketing system may help organize follow-up. Agree on who owns incoming leads, how quickly they will be contacted, and how their eventual outcomes will be recorded. Otherwise, a campaign report may show submissions without revealing whether they became customers.

Choose measures that match the goal

Campaign goal Useful measures What the measure does not prove by itself
Traffic Clicks, clickthrough rate, keyword performance, and search terms, as listed in Google Ads guidance. That visitors bought, became qualified leads, or were worth the cost.
Leads or sales Completed actions the business values, their quality, and financial impact where measurable. That every recorded action is equally valuable or that a campaign caused every sale.
Traffic quality Whether visitors become buyers or qualified leads, rather than visit volume alone. A universal conversion benchmark. Google’s small-business guide illustrates the distinction with four buyers from one referral source versus 50 window shoppers from another; this is an example, not a general performance standard.
Awareness Measures tied to visibility and reach that fit the campaign’s purpose. Evidence of sales. Awareness measures should not be presented as proof of revenue.

Google’s small-business guide emphasizes that traffic quality can matter more than quantity. The implication for an agency relationship is to ask not only how many people arrived, but what useful action they took and how that action was assessed.

How to evaluate an agency’s plan

There is no single selection checklist established by the cited sources. As a practical decision framework, ask each prospective agency to explain how its proposed work connects to your stated outcome:

  • Goals: Which business outcome is the campaign intended to support, and what is outside its scope?
  • Measurement: Which actions will count as conversions, and how will tracking be checked against your records?
  • Reporting: Which metrics will you see, how often, and how will the report distinguish activity from business results?
  • Adjustments: If results miss the agreed goal, what will the agency investigate and what decisions will be made from the data?
  • Lead handling: Who follows up on inquiries, and how will qualified leads and eventual sales be reflected in reporting?
  • Claims and evidence: What supports any promised outcome, and what assumptions or limitations apply?

These questions help you assess whether the proposed work is understandable and measurable; they do not establish that one agency model is inherently better than another. The available evidence does not establish typical agency fees, standard contract terms, or comparative performance against in-house teams, so those points should be assessed from the actual proposal and agreement rather than assumed.

Set realistic expectations for growth claims

Marketing can create a clearer path from reaching potential customers to measuring their actions, but measurement is not proof that the agency alone caused a change in sales. Business outcomes can also depend on pricing, product fit, seasonality, customer service, and the ability to fulfill demand. Treat forecasts as estimates with stated assumptions, not guaranteed results.

The Federal Trade Commission says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. Its revised Endorsement Guides, announced in 2023, also say endorsements should reflect the endorser’s honest opinion and cannot be used to make a claim the marketer could not legally make. A material connection that consumers would not expect and that could affect how they assess an endorsement should be clearly and conspicuously disclosed. This matters when evaluating testimonials, influencer content, incentivized reviews, or agency-created case studies.

Why measurable growth matters to small businesses

In a June 2023 article, Google attributed to micro-, small-, and medium-size enterprises 90% of businesses, 60–70% of employment, and 50% of gross domestic product worldwide. Those figures are Google’s published characterization, not an independently validated benchmark for an individual business. The article’s author, Selin Song, framed a common owner concern as: “How can I find and keep the right customers and help my business grow with measurable results?” That is a useful way to frame an agency conversation: focus on finding and retaining suitable customers, and agree in advance on what measurable progress means for your business.
