To change the alert for every text, go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound and choose a tone. To assign a different alert to one conversation, use Samsung Messages’ More options > Notification sound menu inside that conversation. Message alerts are separate from call ringtones.
Choose a sound for all message notifications

Open Settings.

Tap Sounds and vibration, then Notification sound.

Select the tone you want for notifications.
This changes the phone’s general notification sound, so it can affect notifications beyond text messages. It is not the call ringtone setting. Samsung’s notification-sound instructions and messaging guidance describe these as separate settings. Menu labels can vary by device and carrier.

Set a different sound for one conversation in Samsung Messages

Open Messages and select the conversation.

Tap More options (the three vertical dots).

Tap Notification sound, then choose a tone.
The selected sound applies to that conversation; Samsung says it will play when the next message arrives. The option may not appear on every device or carrier configuration.

If you use Google Messages
Google Messages has its own notification controls. Open Google Messages > profile icon > Messages settings > Notifications to review sound and vibration options. Samsung documents this app-level route in its Google Messages notification guide. Available controls may differ by app and Android version, so do not assume Samsung Messages’ per-conversation menu is also present in Google Messages.

If notification category sound controls are missing
On some One UI versions, category controls are hidden until you enable them. Samsung Community accepted solutions describe this version-dependent workaround:

Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.

Turn on Manage notification categories for each app.

Go to Settings > Apps > [your messaging app] > Notifications > Notification categories.

Open the relevant category and choose Sound.
This path is not available on every Galaxy model or software release. The menu names and controls can vary. See the Samsung Community discussion.
