The cloud playout service supplies the radio audio; OBS supplies the video-encoder connection to YouTube. Rehearse the full path and confirm that the music and other content are cleared for both livestreaming and any archive.
Choose the right broadcast path
For a simulcast, relay the station’s existing listening stream. This avoids rebuilding the programme in a local studio, but it still requires an encoder path that combines audio with a visual and sends the result to YouTube. Radio.co’s documented YouTube workflow uses OBS for that relay. Its Radio.co Live and Playout.co tools are described as sending live audio to a Radio.co station, not as direct YouTube encoders; Playout.co supports one Radio.co station at a time.

The local-encoder route means a computer running OBS has to remain connected and monitored during the broadcast. If capturing system audio, remember that desktop alerts and browser sounds can go out on air too.

Find and test the listening URL
Copy the public listening-stream URL from the radio service dashboard. Confirm that it plays in a browser or compatible player before adding it to OBS. Use the station’s actual listener feed rather than assuming a dashboard or playout-control URL is also the public stream.

Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live.
- For an immediate broadcast, use the Stream tab. To schedule, use Manage and create the scheduled stream. Scheduling can provide a watch page to share and reminders for viewers.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
Build the OBS scene and connect it to YouTube
- In OBS, add the station listening feed as a media source. Radio.co’s example uses a VLC media source for the listening link; available source choices can depend on the URL and OBS setup.
- Add a visual source, such as a still image, station artwork, webcam, or capture source. Arrange it in the scene so the broadcast has an intentional picture rather than a blank video frame.
- Check OBS’s audio meter while the feed is playing. Listen to the output, confirm the correct programme is selected, and adjust levels to avoid silence or clipping.
- Open OBS stream settings and enter the stream URL and key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Use the YouTube preset if available.
- Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it. If you need the RTMPS server address, YouTube’s stream settings can reveal it through the lock icon. Use the exact server address provided there rather than substituting a guessed URL.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, check the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready. Verify the public or unlisted status you intend before promoting the watch page.

Rehearse and monitor the broadcast
- Confirm the station feed is audible in OBS and in YouTube’s preview.
- Check that the still image or other visual is correct and remains visible.
- Mute notification sounds and close anything that could play unexpected system audio if that is part of your capture path.
- Check stream privacy, scheduled start time, and the intended YouTube destination before announcing the event.
- Keep an eye on the encoder and Live Control Room during the broadcast. A cloud radio service may keep the station playout running, but the separate OBS-to-YouTube connection still needs to be operating.
Clear music and other content for YouTube
A licence that permits music on a radio station does not automatically establish permission to use that music in a YouTube livestream or leave it in an archived video. YouTube’s livestream terms make the streamer responsible for the necessary rights on Google services, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder and warning; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm YouTube-specific live permissions and allowlisting with the rights owner before relying on a licensed commercial-music feed.

End the stream and verify the recording
- Stop sending the programme from OBS when the broadcast is over.
- End the stream in YouTube Live Control Room as appropriate, then confirm that the live broadcast has ended.
- Check the channel’s video list for the archive and review its visibility and playback.
- Resolve any Content ID notice or rights issue before sharing or relying on the recording.
Troubleshoot common problems
