Before launching, estimate a full month of compute, storage, and network costs: the VM is billed while it runs, and an interruptible instance can stop unexpectedly. If your stream is only prerecorded videos on a loop, a hosted playlist service may be simpler than managing a GPU VM.
Decide whether a cloud GPU fits your stream
A cloud GPU is most useful when your broadcast needs real-time graphics, compositing, an interactive application, or GPU hardware encoding. For a playlist of prerecorded videos, you may not need a general-purpose GPU machine at all. Choose the architecture around the source and production workflow, not simply the desire to keep a channel live.
- Custom real-time production: A GPU VM gives you a general-purpose environment for OBS and other applications, provided the selected instance exposes a compatible encoder to its operating system and software.
- Prerecorded playlist: A hosted cloud streamer can remove the need to administer a VM, but its features and limits may not suit custom scenes or real-time applications.
- Continuity-sensitive broadcast: Standard on-demand capacity avoids the specific interruption risk of spot instances, but it does not eliminate failures in the VM, network, source media, or encoder.
Compare options by source type, encoder access, continuity and recovery, full cost, operational work, and control. GPU availability and prices vary by provider, region, and configuration; there is no universally best GPU size for every stream.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Complete this before planning a launch time. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
- Create or select a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s encoder setup method to obtain the ingest details and stream key for the broadcast.
- Treat the stream key like a password. NVIDIA warns that anyone with the key can take over the stream. Do not put it in screenshots, public logs, shared cloud-init files, or source code. If exposed, rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting again. See NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide.
Choose and launch a GPU virtual machine
Size for the actual workload
Decide the output resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and codec before choosing an instance. GPU hardware can help with real-time rendering and encoding, but a more powerful GPU is not automatically necessary for a simple scene. Confirm that the provider’s chosen instance and guest operating system expose the required GPU encoder, and check compatibility with the OBS build you intend to use.

Check availability and billing details
GPU capacity and rates depend on the provider, region, and machine configuration. Verify availability and the current price for the exact VM before committing to a long-running deployment. On-demand compute, storage, and network transfer are separate parts of the bill on major cloud platforms; AWS describes per-second On-Demand billing subject to a minimum billing interval and separate data-transfer pricing, while Google Cloud lists VM, disk, network, and GPU components. Review the live calculators and pricing pages for your selected region: AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing and Google Cloud Compute Engine pricing.
Spot or other interruptible capacity can reduce compute expense, but it may be reclaimed. Use it only if you accept interruptions and have a tested restart plan or failover. See Google Cloud Spot VMs for an example of an interruptible offering.

Install OBS and configure the YouTube encoder
- Install the operating system and GPU drivers. Follow the cloud provider’s instructions for the instance and guest OS. Verify the GPU and encoder are visible before building the broadcast around them.
- Install a compatible OBS version. Add the media, scenes, audio, overlays, and any other sources needed for the program. Test playback and audio locally within the VM session before going live.
- Set YouTube as the destination. In OBS, configure YouTube as the streaming service or use a supported account connection. If using a stream key, enter the key through OBS’s stream settings and avoid copying it into scripts or logs.
- Choose a hardware encoder when supported. NVIDIA recommends NVENC for YouTube and gives codec guidance based on GPU generation: AV1 for RTX 40-series GPUs or HEVC otherwise in its out-of-the-box advice. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every combination is accepted. Verify current YouTube ingest options and compatibility for your exact GPU, OBS version, and stream type in NVIDIA’s guide and YouTube’s guide.
- Run a test broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the expected video and audio appear, and the encoder remains stable before relying on it continuously.
Keep the broadcast running and plan recovery
An always-on stream depends on more than OBS settings. The VM must remain available, the network path must work, source media must remain accessible, and the OBS process must stay healthy. A disconnect may require both restarting the encoder and confirming that YouTube is receiving the feed again.
- Configure the VM to start the streaming process after boot, using the service manager or supervision method appropriate to the chosen OS.
- Set up process monitoring and alerts so you can detect a failed encoder or lost connection rather than assuming the broadcast is still live.
- Test recovery with a controlled VM restart and a simulated OBS failure before depending on the setup.
- Do not assume a restart policy alone ensures continuity: spot capacity can be reclaimed, and a restarted process may still need a valid source, credentials, network access, and a working YouTube ingest connection.
The exact unattended-startup and health-check steps depend on the selected operating system and cloud platform. Validate their current documentation for your deployment; there is no single OBS supervision recipe that applies to every VM.

Estimate the full monthly cost
For a continuously running VM, estimate compute for all hours it is on, then add the resources and traffic around it. A GPU instance that looks inexpensive by its hourly compute rate can cost more once persistent storage and outbound video data are included.
- GPU VM compute for the expected running hours
- Attached disk and any snapshots
- Network egress, including the video sent to YouTube
- Public IP charges if applicable
- Taxes and any region-specific charges
Use the provider’s live pricing calculator for the chosen region and configuration. An exact all-in monthly figure cannot be stated without those choices and an estimate of outbound traffic.

Consider managed paths if you do not need a general-purpose VM
YouTube’s verified-encoder information lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as supporting live processing up to 4Kp60 HEVC. That is an available managed encoder path, not proof that it is the most economical or suitable setup for a small always-on channel. See YouTube’s verified-encoder information.
For uploaded prerecorded videos arranged as a playlist, Streamstead and LiveGoLive market cloud-hosted continuous streaming, reconnect, or playlist playback. Those capabilities are vendor claims; check current pricing, limits, support, and rights requirements directly before choosing. A hosted playlist service avoids administering a general-purpose GPU VM, but may not support a custom real-time scene or application. See Streamstead and LiveGoLive.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept a live feed | Live streaming may not be enabled yet, the broadcast setup may be incomplete, or the key may be wrong. | Confirm channel activation, select the correct broadcast and encoder setup in Live Control Room, and check or rotate the key if needed. |
| OBS cannot use the GPU encoder | The instance, driver, guest OS, or OBS build may not expose a compatible hardware encoder. | Verify GPU visibility and driver installation, then confirm encoder support for the exact instance and software combination before going live. |
| The broadcast stops after the VM is interrupted | The selected capacity may be interruptible, or the VM/process may have failed. | Check provider instance status and process health; restart the VM or encoder and confirm YouTube receives the feed. Use tested supervision or failover if interruptions are unacceptable. |
| The stream appears live but lacks expected audio or visuals | A source, scene, media path, or audio device may not be available in the VM session. | Open OBS, verify source paths and audio levels, and test a controlled broadcast before restoring unattended operation. |
| The cloud bill exceeds the compute estimate | Storage, snapshots, egress, IP charges, or taxes may have been omitted. | Inspect the itemized bill and update the estimate using the provider’s current rates for the actual region and configuration. |
Protect your channel and content
A technically successful encoder connection does not establish that you have the rights to stream every song, video, image, or other source in your program. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, and follow YouTube’s current policies for copyright and monetization. A continuous stream also does not guarantee eligibility for monetization: YouTube evaluates channels under its policies, including rules concerning reused content. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated material.
