A ChatGPT Dot is a software agent you use through ChatGPT—not a dedicated smart speaker. You can message or call it from ChatGPT on desktop, the web, or mobile, connect selected apps, delegate work, and inspect what it does. Dot creation is also available in the ChatGPT mobile app according to OpenAI’s October 9, 2026 update.
What a ChatGPT Dot is—and what it is not
A ChatGPT Dot is an agent that operates through your ChatGPT account. OpenAI’s launch material describes Dots working in ChatGPT on desktop, the web, and mobile, and also through Slack and Teams. The same material does not describe a dedicated Dot speaker, microphone appliance, or required accessory.

That distinction matters when you plan to use voice. You contact the Dot through ChatGPT’s voice mode; you are not placing a call to a standalone room device. The documented behavior is that you can call your Dot. It does not establish that a Dot can place ordinary telephone calls to you, and it does not describe an always-listening, hands-free speaker.

You therefore need to decide which accounts and apps it may access instead of assuming it can see everything available on your device.

Who can use Dots and where they are available
Availability and entitlements below come from OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 launch announcement and are launch-era details that may change. Check the current ChatGPT plan and workspace documentation before relying on them.

OpenAI also describes an ecosystem of more than 4,000 apps. That is OpenAI’s own description of the plugin ecosystem, not an independently verified count and not a promise that every integration is available to every user or workspace.
How to create your first Dot
There are now two documented setup paths. The original launch instructions used the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. An October 9, 2026 update says you can also create a Dot directly in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS and Android. Labels can change as the feature rolls out, so follow the Dot creation entry shown in your current ChatGPT interface.
Desktop app or desktop browser
- Open ChatGPT in the desktop app or in a desktop browser and start the Dot creation flow.
- Give the Dot a name and complete the introduction requested by the setup flow. Use a name that will be unambiguous when you address it by voice or text.
- Connect only the apps needed for your first job. You can add more later; starting with a narrow permission set makes activity easier to review.
- Describe the outcome you want, not just a vague role. State the source it may use, the format you want back, a deadline or schedule if relevant, and actions it must not take.
- Set approval requirements for consequential actions, then watch the Dot’s activity. Redirect or pause the work when the plan changes.
ChatGPT mobile app
- Install or update the ChatGPT app on iOS or Android and sign in to an account eligible for Dots.
- Use the Dot creation option shown in the mobile app. OpenAI announced this direct mobile creation route on October 9, 2026, after the desktop-first launch.
- Complete the name and introduction prompts, connect the minimum apps, and specify boundaries before assigning work.
- Open the Dot from the mobile app afterward to send messages, use voice, inspect progress, or handle a request for approval.
If mobile creation is not offered in your account, that does not prove the feature is broken. Rollout, plan eligibility, market availability, and workspace administration can all affect what appears. Use the desktop or browser route if it is available, or ask your workspace administrator about the Enterprise beta.
Prepare a Dot before giving it real work
The first useful conversation should establish operating rules. A practical brief can include:
- Goal: “Prepare a weekly summary of support-mail themes.”
- Allowed sources: name the connected mailbox, files, calendar, or project system it may read.
- Output: specify whether you want a short message, a table, a draft, or a list of decisions.
- Approval boundary: require approval before sending, purchasing, deleting, changing permissions, or making another consequential change.
- Stop condition: tell it to pause and ask when information conflicts, a deadline is unclear, or an action falls outside the stated scope.
Connected-app permissions are managed through ChatGPT’s existing app controls. Custom Rules can allow an action, require approval for it, or block it. Apply the narrowest rule that still lets the Dot complete the job. For example, allowing read-only access to a project board is materially different from allowing it to edit or close items.

How voice conversations with a Dot work
OpenAI says you can message or call Dots in ChatGPT on desktop, the web, and mobile. Voice is therefore an interaction mode for an existing Dot, useful when speaking is faster than typing or when you want to think through an ongoing task aloud.
The launch article does not provide durable instructions for a particular call button or control location. Do not rely on a fixed icon sequence: open the current ChatGPT interface, select your Dot, and use the voice or call control that your version presents. If the control is absent, check that you are in the Dot conversation, that your account has access, and that the app is current.
Good voice requests
- “Review the notes in the connected project folder and tell me which decisions still need my approval.”
- “Ask me one question at a time while we turn this idea into a project plan.”
- “Give me a progress update, and pause before sending anything or changing a record.”
- “When you find conflicting dates, read them back and wait for my choice.”
Dots can message users with progress, questions, or decisions that need attention. A voice conversation can start the work, clarify a requirement, or provide feedback while the Dot continues an authorized task. It does not remove the need to inspect the resulting work.
Voice limitations to keep in mind
- A Dot is not documented as an always-listening household speaker.
- The reviewed launch material establishes that users call their Dot; it does not establish that the Dot makes ordinary phone calls.
- Voice quality, exact controls, and availability can vary by current ChatGPT app and account, so avoid treating an older interface description as permanent.
Use a Dot for everyday tasks
Everyday work is best handled as a clearly bounded request. Dots can use a cloud computer, browser, and connected apps, and OpenAI says they can work on several projects. Start with one outcome and one set of sources rather than granting broad access and asking the Dot to “handle everything.”
Information gathering and summaries
Ask the Dot to collect information from an approved connected app, organize it, and report uncertainties. OpenAI describes proactive research using connected apps as read-only. That makes a request such as “compare the open issues in these two read-only project views” more appropriate than “change every status you find.”

Drafting and planning
A Dot can turn notes into a brief, agenda, checklist, or draft response. Keep the final send or publication step behind approval. Include the audience, tone, source material, and length in the initial request so the Dot has a testable definition of done.

Monitoring several projects
If you manage multiple projects, give each one a distinct scope and connected source. Ask for progress messages only when a defined condition occurs—for example, a blocked dependency or a decision that needs you. This reduces unhelpful updates and makes Activity View easier to audit.
Small administrative jobs
Examples include extracting action items from a meeting record, grouping incoming requests, preparing a recurring status draft, or finding information in an authorized knowledge base. Before enabling an action, decide whether the Dot should only prepare a proposal or is allowed to apply the change itself.
Reminders, recurring work, and Scheduled Tasks
The strongest documented reminder-like capability is Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work. OpenAI’s October 9 update says a Dot can review and edit Scheduled Tasks, including recurring tasks. This lets you manage scheduled work through ChatGPT Work rather than treating the Dot as a conventional alarm clock.

Do not assume that saying “remind me at 8” will create a phone notification or an arbitrary alarm unless your current ChatGPT interface explicitly offers and confirms that behavior.
Create a useful scheduled request
- Describe the recurring result: for example, “Every Monday, prepare a draft of unresolved support themes from the connected mailbox.”
- Specify the source, time zone, schedule, output destination, and the point at which you must approve an action.
- Ask the Dot to show the scheduled task details before you rely on it.
- Review and edit the task in ChatGPT Work when the schedule, source, or scope changes.
- Inspect the resulting activity and correct the task if it produces an incomplete or incorrect result.
Use a calendar, alarm, or timer application when you need a conventional alert and the Dot has not explicitly confirmed that function. The documented Scheduled Tasks feature is about managing scheduled work in ChatGPT Work; it is not evidence of every reminder feature people may expect from a phone assistant.
Choose the right way to work with a Dot

Review, safety, and privacy controls
Activity View is the place to follow a Dot’s work and redirect it when necessary. Read the activity before accepting an important result, especially when the Dot used several apps or made a decision from incomplete information.

Keep sensitive actions with the user. OpenAI specifically says actions such as changing a password remain the user’s responsibility. Treat messages, drafts, and recommendations as work to verify, not as proof that an external system was updated correctly.
Connect only the apps needed for the task, remove access that is no longer necessary, and make approval rules explicit. A read-only research request should not silently become an editing permission. If the Dot asks for broader access than expected, pause and reassess the request instead of accepting automatically.
For privacy, OpenAI says the Dot’s cloud computer is separate from your computer unless you choose to connect it. On personal plans, users can control whether Dot conversations and work are used to improve models. Content from business, enterprise, and education workspaces is not used for model improvement by default, according to the launch announcement. Workspace policies and your own account settings still determine what is permitted.
How Dot usage counts toward limits
An OpenAI Support reply dated October 7, 2026 distinguishes conversation use from delegated product work: Dot conversations do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, while tasks started or managed in Work or Codex count toward those products’ usual limits.

The support reply does not provide exact numeric quotas or explain how every activity is counted. Do not rely on a made-up daily allowance. If a task stops because of a limit, check the current usage information for the specific product involved rather than assuming the voice conversation itself consumed the same allowance.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Dot option is missing
Confirm that you are signed into the intended account, that your plan and market are eligible, and—if this is a workspace account—that an administrator has enabled the feature. Try the desktop or browser creation route if mobile creation is unavailable. The October 9 mobile announcement does not guarantee simultaneous availability for every account.
Voice controls are not visible
Open the Dot conversation in the current ChatGPT app or web interface, update the app if necessary, and check account access. Because OpenAI has not published a permanent button sequence, use the control shown in your version rather than following an old screenshot.
The Dot cannot access an app
Review the app connection in ChatGPT’s existing app controls and confirm that the Dot was granted the required scope. If the task only needs reading, do not grant editing rights. A workspace administrator may also restrict available apps.
The result is wrong or incomplete
Open Activity View, identify which source or decision went wrong, and redirect the Dot with a corrected boundary. Ask it to show assumptions and unresolved questions before it continues. For consequential work, perform the external verification yourself.
A scheduled task did not produce what you expected
Review the Scheduled Task in ChatGPT Work, including its recurrence, source app, time zone, and output instructions. Edit the task rather than creating several overlapping copies. If you expected a simple alarm or timer, use a dedicated reminder tool unless ChatGPT explicitly confirms that function for your account.
