A BOOX tablet can become a calm reading-and-writing workstation when you deliberately limit its home screen, keep reading inside NeoReader, and use Notes only when a task calls for it. The tablet does not create that environment automatically: current BOOX models support third-party Android apps, so your installed apps, shortcuts, and notifications determine how many interruptions remain.
This guide sets up a practical workflow for loading documents, reading and annotating them, writing beside them, choosing an appropriate refresh mode, and deciding whether synchronization is worth enabling. Menus and available features vary by model and firmware, so use the instructions as a framework and confirm labels on your device.

What a low-distraction BOOX setup actually is
Low distraction is a configuration choice, not a measured property of every E Ink tablet. Start with the work you intend to do and expose only the tools needed for that work. For most owners, that means a reader, Notes, and a way to transfer files. Everything else can be hidden, grouped, or left off the home screen when the interface permits it.

- Writing on purpose: Notes handles a separate notebook, while NeoReader Split View can keep a note attached to the document you are reading.
- Fewer interruptions: Third-party apps are available on current models, but you choose which apps, shortcuts, and notifications remain visible.
- Local control: You can keep files on the tablet and export annotations where supported; cloud synchronization is optional.
There is no reliable percentage for how much a BOOX improves concentration, comprehension, productivity, or eye comfort. Official BOOX material explains reflective display behavior and ghosting, but it does not establish a clinical or productivity result for a particular model.

Check your model before designing the workflow
BOOX features are model- and firmware-dependent. Do not assume that a setting shown on one product page appears on every tablet. The following comparison uses the configurations identified in BOOX product information.

If writing by hand is central, verify the stylus named for your model before buying one. If you plan to type long drafts, verify keyboard-cover compatibility rather than assuming that a case for another 10.3-inch tablet will fit. A case is optional; it is not required for the reading workflow.
Prepare the material you will actually read
- Collect the current books, articles, or PDFs in a folder that is easy to transfer.
- Decide whether the tablet will be your primary copy or a working copy that you later export from.
- Install or retain only the file-transfer method you need. BOOX documentation covers file transfer and app management, but the exact route differs by device and software version.
- Charge and pair the compatible stylus if you will handwrite. A stylus is unnecessary for a text-only reading session.
Build a focused home screen
Set the home screen around the next task, not around every capability the tablet offers. A minimal arrangement makes the intended action obvious when you wake the device.
- Keep the core shortcuts visible. Place NeoReader, Notes, and your chosen file-transfer tool where you can reach them immediately.
- Group unrelated apps. If the launcher allows folders or shortcut removal, move entertainment, shopping, social, and other nonessential apps out of the main view.
- Review notifications. Third-party apps can generate interruptions. In the Android or BOOX notification controls available on your model, disable alerts that are not part of the writing or reading task.
- Choose a task before opening the tablet. Decide whether the session is for reading, extracting notes, or drafting. The choice determines which app you open first.
- Revisit the layout after a week. Remove shortcuts you never use and add only a tool that repeatedly saves a step in your actual workflow.

Open and adjust a document
- Launch NeoReader and open the book or document you transferred.
- Use the document display controls to set a comfortable text size, layout, contrast, or page behavior for that format. The available controls differ between reflowable text and fixed-layout PDFs.
- Read in a single window when you want the fewest visual elements. Hide toolbars after making an adjustment if your firmware provides that option.
- When a passage matters, use text selection to highlight, underline, or annotate it rather than switching to another app.
Exact toolbar names and locations can change with firmware. If a control described in an older help page is absent, look in the current document toolbar or the reader’s settings rather than changing the whole workflow.
Capture and review annotations
NeoReader supports text selection, highlights, underlines, and annotations. After reading, open the document’s annotation list to review captured passages without paging through the entire file again. BOOX also documents exporting annotations and handwritten marks; the export command and file format depend on the device and document.

- Choose the highlight, underline, or annotation action offered by the selection toolbar.
- Add a short note only when it records a decision, question, or action. Avoid turning every highlight into a second copy of the page.
- Open the annotation list at the end of the session and remove marks that no longer serve the project.
- Export annotations when you need them in another writing system, using the export option available on your device.
For handwriting on a page, use the stylus tools supplied by the reader. Export support for handwritten marks is documented by BOOX, but the exact menu and output vary by model and firmware.
Choose how to write beside what you are reading
BOOX provides two different side-by-side approaches. They look similar but produce different note relationships.
Use NeoReader Split View for an associated note
NeoReader Split View keeps the document and a note in the same reading context. BOOX’s help documentation describes it this way: “Split View in NeoReader allows you to use two windows on a screen for multitasking, like reading, handwriting, and typing.” BOOX describes the workflow as taking notes while reading books.

- Choose Split View from the reader controls if your model exposes it.
- Select handwriting or typing for the note pane.
- Read on one side and capture a question, outline, quotation, or next action on the other.
- Close the split view using the on-screen control when you want a full-page reading view.
BOOX says the note created in NeoReader Split View is associated with the document. That association is useful for a research paper, a course text, or a manuscript where the notes should stay tied to one source.

Choose system Split Screen when you want Notes to remain independent of the document. Open NeoReader as one app and Notes as the second app through the Android or BOOX multitasking control available on your model. The resulting notebook is separate rather than an associated NeoReader note.
- Use the associated option when you want to return from an annotation to its source document.
- Use the separate option when you are building a general journal, meeting record, outline, or project notebook that combines several documents.
- Do not assume Split View, stylus handwriting, or AI Read is available on every BOOX model. The product and help pages identify these features selectively.
Keep one side wide enough to read comfortably. If the document becomes too cramped to follow, read a section full-screen, then switch to the note pane for a short capture pass.
Set the E Ink refresh behavior deliberately
E Ink can leave faint remnants of previous content, called ghosting. Ghosting is a normal display behavior, not evidence that the document is damaged. BOOX recommends choosing a refresh mode in EinkWise and optionally enabling Auto Full Refresh to manage it.
A practical refresh routine
- Open the display or EinkWise controls on your device.
- Start with the default refresh mode while reading ordinary text.
- If page changes leave distracting remnants, try another available mode and compare the result on the document you actually use.
- Enable Auto Full Refresh if you prefer the device to schedule full refreshes rather than triggering them manually.
- When handwriting or scrolling looks untidy, perform a full refresh using the control provided by your firmware.
Refresh modes and names vary across devices. A faster mode may be useful for moving through a document, while a cleaner full refresh can be preferable when ghosting interferes with close reading. Treat these as session-level choices rather than permanent claims about every BOOX screen.

Decide whether synchronization belongs in your workflow
BOOX documents synchronization for reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, underlines, annotations, and handwritten notes across BOOX devices. That can be convenient if you move between tablets, but it is not required for a low-distraction setup.
Keep the workflow local when
- You use one tablet and want the fewest account prompts and background processes.
- Your documents are private and you prefer to transfer or export them manually.
- You already have a dependable local backup routine.
Enable sync when
- You regularly switch between BOOX devices and need the same reading position and marks on each.
- You accept the account and network steps required by the current firmware.
- You have confirmed which categories of data your model synchronizes.
Before relying on synchronization, test it with a noncritical document. Keep an exported copy of important annotations so a sign-in, firmware change, or device replacement does not become the only path to your notes.
Use third-party apps without losing the focus of the device
The Note Air5 C product information lists Android 15 and third-party app support. That flexibility is useful for a writing workflow, but it also means the tablet can become a general-purpose Android screen. Install an app only when it solves a recurring task that NeoReader, Notes, or your file-transfer method cannot handle.
- Define an allow-list: keep only the apps needed for reading, writing, transfer, reference, or accessibility.
- Remove launch friction: hide unrelated shortcuts and avoid placing interruptive apps beside NeoReader.
- Control alerts: allow notifications that represent a real task and suppress the rest using the controls provided by your model.
- Separate sessions: finish a reading or drafting block before opening a browser or another reference app.
- Recheck after updates: firmware or app updates can restore shortcuts, change menus, or alter refresh behavior.
Other BOOX models may use a different Android version or expose a different app set. Treat the Note Air5 C specification as model-specific, not as a promise about the entire BOOX range.
Three practical session patterns
Read-only session
- Open NeoReader from the focused home screen.
- Set the display and refresh mode once.
- Read without opening Notes or another app.
- Mark only passages you will revisit.
- Close the document when the reading block ends.
Read, capture, and return
- Open NeoReader and choose Split View if the note should remain associated with the document.
- Write a one-sentence reaction, question, or action for each important section.
- Review the annotation list before closing.
- Export the marks if the next stage of the project happens elsewhere.
Draft from several sources
- Use system Split Screen with NeoReader and a separate Notes notebook when the notes combine multiple documents.
- Record source names or page references in the notebook as you go.
- Close the reader before opening another source so the task remains bounded.
- Export or back up the notebook at the end of the session.
These patterns keep the choice of app tied to the task. They do not claim that a particular schedule or screen arrangement produces a quantified improvement.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
Ghosting makes text hard to read
Open EinkWise, try another refresh mode, and use Auto Full Refresh or a manual full refresh if available. If the control is missing, check the display settings for your model and firmware; not every device exposes identical options.
Split View is missing
Confirm that you are in NeoReader rather than another reader app, then check the current firmware and model documentation. Split View is not universal. If it is unavailable, use system Split Screen with Notes when your device supports Android multitasking.
The note is not attached to the document
You probably opened Notes as a separate app. Use NeoReader Split View for an associated note, or continue with the separate notebook intentionally when you want a project-level record.

Annotations cannot be found after reading
Open the document’s annotation list. If you need the marks outside the tablet, use the export function documented for your device. Export menus and supported formats can differ by firmware.
The stylus does not work as expected
Verify that the pen is compatible with the exact model. Pen3 is identified for the Note Air5 C, while the Go 10.3 (Gen II) information identifies InkSense Plus compatibility. A pen that works with one model should not be assumed to work with another.
Sync is incomplete or unavailable
Check that the same account and network requirements are met on each device, then confirm which data categories the current firmware supports. Keep local files and exported annotations until the sync result is visible on the destination device.
The tablet still feels distracting
Return to the home-screen setup. Remove unused shortcuts, suppress nonessential notifications, and uninstall or sign out of apps that repeatedly pull you away from NeoReader or Notes. E Ink alone does not enforce these boundaries.

- Identify your exact BOOX model and firmware version.
- Confirm the supported stylus and any keyboard or case before purchasing accessories.
- Transfer one current document and open it in NeoReader.
- Adjust the document display and select an EinkWise refresh mode.
- Choose whether notes should be associated through NeoReader Split View or kept separate in system Split Screen.
- Test highlighting, underlining, handwritten marks, annotation review, and export.
- Decide which apps and notifications are allowed on the home screen.
- Test synchronization with a noncritical file, or leave it disabled and maintain local exports.
- Repeat the setup after a firmware update if menus or features change.
The result is a BOOX tablet organized around a small number of deliberate actions: open the reading material, capture only useful notes, and export or sync when the project requires it. Model-specific capabilities determine which of those actions are available, while your app and notification choices determine how quiet the device feels.
